Why did they never do this?

Everyone had that idea when Nintendo spoke about "Assymetric Multiplayer"

Obvious idea.jpg - 1050x526, 184.39K

How will the dungeon master be having fun?

Because every game that did do this on the PiiU fucking sucked.

several games did do this though. they just didn't make extensive use of it. the wii u wasn't popular with 3rd party devs though, and they would have been the ones making a game like this.

Draw group of people playing games

One of them is always a "girl"

All 0 games that properly utilized the gamepad sucked. You're right.
They get to control monsters and scenarios.

why would you want a sausage fest

what, in case you run out of paper?

Some people like to wrangle tards through their magical realms

It's still a sausage fest m8

All 0 games that properly utilized the gamepad sucked

Name 1

several games did this

Doubt

Anyone in any creative field will tell you that ideas are a dime a dozen and executing on them is the difficult part.

People act like game developers haven't thought of all their great game ideas. They have. Game development is a negotiation between budget, scope, and time. They make the game that they have the resources to make.

All 0 games that properly utilized the gamepad sucked

Bowser party was a side mode instead of the main game so it didn't have enough mini games

And?

If Mario party 10 is the best example then shot is more fucked than I ever realized.

I played Smash and Mario Kart with the game pad, but the only games I ever played that required it were the DS games they put on the virtual console

And fuck your mother

Nintendo land was good but it was a pack in.

offer nothing of value

THAT ONE'S FREE

Them maybe Nintendo shouldn’t have made the fucking gimmick. Maybe they should have asked 3rd party devs if they would even make games with asymmetrical gameplay in mind.

"obvious idea"

"ideas are a dime a dozen"

What you're not understanding is that unlike the Penny Arcade guy I'm not presenting the idea as valuable. Just the logical choice.

All 0 games that properly utilized the gamepad sucked

Zombi U was mid.

Most people don't want a sausage fest every time idiot. It's just it almost never happens that a girl happens to be there.

Spoken like a mindbroken feminized male

Girls tend to ruin dynamics anyway so unless you're playing something like mario party, the vibe is going to go to shit.

Building and populating a level takes several times longer than playing through it even if you have a user friendly level editor
A game like this would have 3 people waiting hours for the dungeon master to finish building something they beat in minutes

This is a cool idea, however it is very hard to find three people that know what a WiiU is

If Nintendo cared what 3rd party devs wanted, they wouldn't have made any of the consoles that they've put out in last 20 years.

Yes which is why the comic is stupid and almost never happens yet they always draw it that way.

how else are me and the boys suppose to give each other brojobs?

how does the dm ever have fun?
they don't but someone's gotta do it

Something like Crawl would have been perfect for this gimmick.
Three players are monsters and one is the actual player trying to complete the dungeon. The monster to kill him becomes the next player, and the monsters can activate traps.
You could easily flip this into one player placing monsters, activating traps, etc. with the gamepad while the other three are human players. During a 1:30 or so timed planning phase, the "dungeon monster" could be setting up a dungeon layout while the human players check the shop, upgrade stats, etc.
In reality, the only games that truly utilized the gamepad were Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends, and apparently this but I never played it. Apparently NSMBU used it to let you place platforms, but good fucking luck getting your friends to play that with you

dungeon masters are generally expected to prepare the game ahead of time, not when everyone comes over.

there is a very specific kind of autist that being a DM appeals to

but that's the whole point of OP's pic

If it isn’t literally already in existence, Nintendo will never fund it

The best example would be Fatal Frame/Project Zero 5 where the gamepad was used as a camera.
Also Star Fox Guard

More generally how did a AAA take on Zombie Master never happen?

You had zombie co-op shooter mods that eventually become AAA products like Left 4 Dead. But no AAA studio tried making a polished version of the idea of one where there's one player who has an RTS view of the game and spawning/commanding zombies to try and kill the other players.

Nintendo are a bunch of hacks, who knew.

Nintendo generally doesn't make new games outside of their established IPs, it's not like they'd be the ones making a game like that

Splatoon was pretty original when Nintendo came up with it.

99% of game masters are shit. Otherwise they'd be making their own game.

Have to have 3 irl friends willing to play this retarded game with me.

Not for me I guess.

Where have I heard this one before...

Nintendo generally doesn't make new games outside of their established IP

Except Splatoon, Ring Fit, Labo, NES Remix, Crashmo/Pushmo, Dillon's Rolling Western etc etc

I can’t believe splatoon is a decade old, one day I’ll blink and I’ll be 100 years old.

He forgot the fucking link cables, he still can’t play. He also never said that he bought the game.

If the fucking insane budgets and departments employed by the modern gaming industry are not enough, then something is wrong with our current concept of game development.

The reality is that there are too many video games out there competing for a very limited audience, and therefore it has become increasingly less likely that irl friends are all just casually playing the same game without having preplanned time in it together.

Natural selection 2 kind of does that, but 99% of the time most people just ignored the commander role loel

Oink oink oink just develop this

Natural Selection

Savage

Probably more but those were the big millennialcore games that did that shtick

Nsmbu with the platform adder

Because AAA has made a polished version. Polishing the idea to them means chamfering off the RTS elements.

Reminds me of custom maps I used to play in Starcraft and later Warcraft 3.
Action RPG maps with one player as the game master who can edit terrain and add units at will.
It was super fun setting up adventures for people.

Apparently NSMBU used it to let you place platforms

In the manner it was intended where they help you out? Of course not.
Where the guy with the touchpad is actively trying to murder the guys completing the level it was gold.
youtube.com/watch?v=wmL7epUlNGo

it's genuinely pointless to give people the means to do shit like that, because they will always do it, they will always think it is funny, they will get bored after 10 minutes, and then they wont even want to play the game anymore, even though all you wanted to do was play a proper co op game.

t. millenials

Some of those official videos went pretty hard with it tho

Mario autists never fail to impress with how well they manage to push simple mechanics.

it just didn't sell enough units to justify the amount of effort required. They were going to do this for BOTW but they changed how the Sheikah Slate worked so it could be a switch launch title.

I wonder what was the point where they just said "fuck it" and moved all their projects in development to the switch. the wii u didn't even have a proper 3d mario. the only one they did have was basically a rehash/sequel to a handheld game.

control monsters and scenarios

The problem with that is that no pre-programmed game will have that much freedom in actually being a DM and willing to adapt to player choices, otherwise everyone is just playing a mediocre WRPG with the occasional "fuck you, that's why" mechanic.

Facilitating multiple other characters progression is fun. It's like a little sandbox playground where you get to make things "right", but at the same time more complex and cooperative. Additionally thinking on the fly and figuring out how unexpected stuff could play out is fun.
What's tedious as the DM is the prepwork/setup and the normal, by-the-minute gameplay, as well as the sheer boredom of downtime esp. when the party can't decide what to do.
The OP idea embodies all of the latter, and none of the former.

Valve actually prototyped something like this. A group of L4D survivors and one guy with a VR headset is the human Director instead of the AI

I was about to post this thanks anon

How come everyone who plays with tableslop games looks like Reddit incarnate?

because fat autists can't make friends to play with, so they rarely play them in person. most reddits are just socially awkward normies who aren't outwardly offensive to other normies.

Stop playing 5e

Coding takes a decade to learn + shit out a "decent" 3D game by yourself/a small team. That's kinda why people with good ideas don't make games.

Everything I said is fundamental to all RPGs that aren't extremely rules-light story facilitators. Maybe not OSR games either, I guess, but that's even less applicable and more planned than the action RPG that the OP descibes.

Pc can already do this but nobody ever makes games for it that way.
WiiU won't drastically change that and suddenly make it successful.
The design sounds good in concept but is actually sucks.

bald

Coding takes a decade to learn

Don't be retarded and you can pick up all you need in a month.

+ shit out a "decent" 3D game"

If you're shitting out a half-bad game once every 10 years then you're intentionally doing it wrong.

luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing

Nobody remembers this, but there was this absolute fucking deluge of local co-op focused indie games that explored this kind of asymmetrical gameplay circa 2018.
And they all fucking failed. Because outside of testing environments and expo desks, the only time you're going to be able to wrangle that many adults into a room is if it's Christmas or a Craigslist orgy.

Pic unrelated.

How will the dungeon master be having fun?

I assume it would play like fantasy zombie master.

Recently just hacked Wii U

Can't really think of anything to use it for besides Pretendo and the few exclusives left

I mean what else would you use it for. It's not going to be a daily PDA.

Can you still hack a Wii U without the Nintendo Shop exploit?

That was some fucking Kirby Canvas Curse shit

i'm still amazed how the minecraft wii u port didn't use the gamepad for the inventory
the damn 3ds port used the bottom screen like that

Craigslist orgy

I met my wife at one of those. Do zoomies even know about craigslist?

Switch 2 adds Wii U games

create Wii U gamepad app for smartphones/tablets

second screen streamed onto phone

release a joycon holder thing where you can put your smartphone in the middle (adjustable depending on size of phone), or a bigger version with a tablet

don't need this accessory but it's nice if you want the screen always between your controller

same setup can be used to add DS and 3DS games to the virtual console

Nintendo would never do this btw, but I hope modders do

DND

action RPG

idea guys are funny
