It’s 2003.
You’re in elementary school.
You’re playing Ruby & Saphire with your buddies in the outdoor school yard.
Original GBA doesn’t have a backlight.
You literally can’t see shit.
How the fuck did they ship the original GBA like this?

It's ok when Nintendo does it.
GBA with enough sunlight is perfectly playable outdoors
Indoors is where it sucks, you had to camp under a lamp or buy one of those worm lights
It was cheap
Cool story bro
Completely disagree. GBA was unplayable outdoors. Really could only use it in the school cafeteria.
man I love the original gba design, coolest looking handheld ever
I raise you the SP v2.
Backlight that actually worked, chargeable. Nicely fit in your pocket, too.
Get out your worm bruh.
No, the other worm.
hold on i thought you said fucking dragon
Zoomer here. How the FUCK did you deal with non rechargable batteries? Do you just do through packs of them?
hey lil bro, unc here, we had more batteries lying around because they were much more prevalent for everything
I had rechargeable AA batteries for my GBC. Never owned a standard GBA, went right to GBSP. Would like to have a modded one with a backlight now though, didn't like the Pocketnow for its GBC form factor.
I forgot about that LCD tint. Playing on the original hardware was a different experience.
2002 was my last year of primary school.
I would never take my gameboy to school either. I wouldn't be getting another one if it got stolen (it would have been).
if you weren't a poorfag you just had an attachment that is basically a reading light for the screen
yes but good ones lasted a long time, duracell you would get days from

Fuck off zoomer. If you were not at least in middle school in 2003 you need to get your underage ass off of this site.
pakis kept unplugging the link cable at break time because i was sweeping them with my rare candied mewtwo on GBC. one of them brought a GBA once with R/S/E.
It sucked. You tossed them out and bought more. At best you could buy big honking AC adapters to play glued to your power outlet or generic rechargeable batteries so questionable companies voided your warranty for using them
vgh the gba experience
true redpill: sprites are meant to viewed on CRT and blurry displays. they look janky on pixel perfect displays
1 hour
The meme is fucking real
rechargeable AA batteries were like magic back then. then the GBASP came along with a backlight and built-in battery, and phones and especially tablets now are space-age equivalent devices. I used to fantasise about having a tablet device, I can't believe I have one. my galaxy watch alone would have blown my child-self's mind, like it's the radio watch out of dick tracy. truly space age, stolen from a UFO, for back then.
remember the shitty pen for the nintendo DS? apple had to invent multi-touch for the iphone in 2007.
>Original GBA doesn’t have a backlight.
>You literally can’t see shit.
Despite what the modern day internet tries to sell you, it was playable.
it was playable
Yeah, obviously. It just wasn't enjoyable, which is the whole point of these things.
It just wasn't enjoyable, which is the whole point of these things.
It was for me. You are a bigger bitch than a 12 year old, reevaluate your life choices retard
I don't play anything on my phone. I can't believe we have supercomputers in our pockets yet games, controls, and latency have all gotten worse.
At least I can shit out an APK in Godot and WiFi it to my phone in seconds
i enjoyed mine.
it's not bad if you get a controller of some sort. tablets are great for gbc emulating. i played an upscaled Paper Mario TTYD with a HQ texture pack on mine years ago. The app store has a lot of solid ports of stuff you'd never expect, like x-com, if you avoid the gatcha pleb stuff.
gbc emulating
*gamecube
handheld emulating is not bad too though
Anon Babble has the only two contrarians who insist that the screen was fine
...in spite of the fact that Nintendo didn't think that it was fine, and quickly released a revision that had a frontlight
the gba sp felt like a next gen leap it was such a massive quality of life difference. the backlight and not needing to replace the batteries felt so premium.
It’s 2003.
You’re in elementary school.
nigga i was 3 years old, i was playing mario teaches typing
mario teaches typing
was it actually useful?
beat mario and luigi SS on a beach
beat FE7 by firelight
it wasn't good but there was something cozy about needing a light source vs. just finding a dark corner to hide in and scroll on your phone
You don't bring your GBA in class. You came here to study. You play on the weekends.
>It’s 2003.
>You’re in elementary school.
No I'm not. I was already an adult.
useful
not really no
though i guess it did help me learn a bit of english considering it's not my first language
not him but I vaguely remember thwomps are a good reason to know exactly where a key is
Get OG GBA for birthday
2 months later see friend with backlit SP
At the ripe age of 7 I became aware of the kikery of nintendo
This is actually correct
A lot of earlier first party GBA titles specifically had that recognizable “pastel” palette because it was designed to be more legible on non-backlit screens
The GBA Mario ports are the best examples of this, but RSE has it too
Playing these games now, it’s very apparent that the colors sometimes look washed out
I remember the complaints about Circle of the Moon being too hard to see on the GBA screen around launch.
I thought the Pokémon anime was wildly futuristic because of the video calling. Crazy how times change.
TLDR
BUY CHINK WARE
BUY CHINKWARE
Yeah I know. Their handhelds are good now.
kek, same. i was pissed. never ended up getting a SP either, had the GBA until I got a DS
though i did get a gamecube game boy player which was pure kino
i thought about buying one for a while but i bought a 3DS instead. i'm happy with my decision
my dad died in 2003
based, you need to buy a chinkware right now , use the code deaddad
