First of all, I don’t agree with labeling Exp33 as JRPG, same like other JRPG inspired games like Chained Echoes or Sea of Stars. To me, JRPG is more than just gameplay. It’s a product of a cultural expression, and that culture is of course, Japanese. There’s something unique to JRPG that only the Japanese get. You can always tell when a “JRPG”... or “anime game” is made by non-Japanese. They reek western-ism and Exp33 is no exception.

If people like E33, they’d like a bunch of other JRPGs as well. They just don’t give them the time of day because they’re really opposed (for some reason) to playing as teenagers or in anime-style.

All that being said, back to your original post, the main thing I see people saying JRPGs need to take away from E33 is having an engaging combat system. I don’t really see many talk about the cultural aspect of it, like you seem to be worried about.
The main thing that I want future devs to take note of regarding E33 is that you can go back to the golden age roots of JRPGs and modernize it. E33 having the overworld map just like old PS1 JRPGs is one of the best aspects of the game. Modern JRPGs have generally abandoned that. E33 also has stupid mini-games that don’t even feel very good, but they add soooo much charm to the game, similarly to FFVII having a random snowboarding game and whatnot.
These aspects that seem to have been left for dead in the golden age of JRPGs were brought back in E33 and they helped the game thrive immensely. That’s the thing I’d like future devs to take from it.

My favorite JRPGS of the last few year have been Atlus and Sqaure shit. Metaphor was my GoTY last year. It’s not just leftists that don’t want the icky stuff it’s people feeling like adult stories map on closer to where they are in life than playing as a teenager. You can call it nihilism but when faced with adult issues having that reflected in art you enjoy can do wonders for a story. There’s a reason why Cathrine became a cult classic. Metaphor also leans into this as well which makes the characters feel more natural. The closest you get to Metaphor going full weeabo is with Eupha which explains why she always makes it to #1 on Japanese popularity polls. I’m not completely sold on the idea that JRPG’s need to be sanitized for the modern audience. Even at say FF7 Rebirths more mature and somber moments the game will pivot to fucking Palmer trying to blow up the whole team like a cartoon character. There’s room for both elements to exist. To me EX33 succeeded where FF16 bombed. I don’t agree with labeling Exp33 as JRPG, same like other JRPG inspired games like Chained Echoes or Sea of Stars. To me, JRPG is more than just gameplay. It’s a product of a cultural expression, and that culture is of course, Japanese. There’s something unique to JRPG that only the Japanese get. You can always tell when a “JRPG”... or “anime game” is made by non-Japanese. They reek western-ism and Exp33 is no exception.

I've been seeing praise for the soundtrack everywhere and I feel like I'm going crazy. 95% of the soundtrack consists of generic piano + violin tracks that are neither special, nor will anyone remember them even 2 seconds later. It's just a whole bunch of nothing that sounds the same from start to finish. It fits the atmosphere, but this is simply not a good video game soundtrack. It's nice background music that clearly was composed for a movie.
There's not a single memorable melody on the entire soundtrack. The composer is obviously talented, but isn't able to write anything above a 7/10. It's all good, but nothing more. It's so by the books that it hurts. Just a bunch of well written, but generic songs that mostly put me to sleep because of unnoteworthy they are. This is the kind of stuff any decent music student would be able to write and record at a pace of like 5 songs per day. Because there's nothing to them. You'd probably get a B- for most of them because of a lack of effort and interesting ideas. And rightfully so. It's all just... there. Just some background music that does its job, but is not really worth mentioning.
So why are people acting like this guy is the next Uematsu or something? The only explanation I can think of is that this game attracted a lot of players who have never heard any of the actually amazing soundtracks gaming has to offer. Because they normally just play games with generic action or fantasy music. So now this game comes along and it's the first time in their life they are hearing something different. So they immediately act like some run of the mill piano music is the best thing they've ever heard.

the game's weak spot is actually its visuals. floating stones type fantasyslop and suspiciously chink looking designs at times put a damper on the whole experience. also the rocks and general environments in many levels that look like any other UE5 game that uses megascans.
