Osaka team the main people behind KH got asked to help get XIV out the door which was the first bump in the production timeline. Nomura's then been busy with a bunch of FF7 stuff and likely Osaka team also had to help there in parts to insure the games got out on time. Missing Link was supposed to be the hold over game that was to keep people busy while KH4 comes out in late 2020's but instead that got canned and now they need to prove they actually have been working on it.. Slowly.

the main reason Versus was canceled is because XIII had development issues and wasn't as well received as they hoped. swiftly followed by XIV being the worst mainline game ever released.
both times they took developers away from Versus to try and fix their messes.
eventually they wanted to make it XV to make more money off of it, which meant that Nomura's original ideas that were green lit no longer seemed appropriate to be in the game.
what happened here is unknown to the public but i'd guess Nomura didn't want to let go of his vision so they forced him off the project entirely to get it done.

XV's problem isn't so much that the core engine is dogshit, it's that the final product was so hastily slapped together that its settings are kind of mangled in output like Sonic Frontiers, which makes big deserts and grassy plains look like total muddy dogshit. The very few times the game ever looked good was in specially-designed locations like the towns or certain dungeon/boss spots that weren't more copy paste tiled asset design.
The fact that they actually bothered to make most of Insomnia because it was left over from an earlier phase of development (like way, WAY too much of the game honestly) and then didn't do fuck all with it until the Ardyn DLC years later, which isn't even much in its own right, says basically everything you need to know, since I don't count the "final dungeon" equivalent as anything worthwhile on sights. It's a complete and utter waste because they simply had no capability to implement it in the game worth a damn.

I don't see how ANY of the above would keep Kingdom Hearts popular with the younger people. Only the OLD FARTS who grew up on this series would still like it and tolerate its failings. Sonic doesn't have that problem. Mario doesn't have that problem. Kratos from God of War doesn't have this problem. Dante from Devil May Cry doesn't have this problem. Solid Snake from Metal Gear doesn't have this problem. Kingdom Hearts IS lame.

That won't work. Who is going to start a whole series by playing the main numbered FOURTH entry of a continuous story. This isn't like Persona 4 or Final Fantasy 4 where each game of those series are unique independent stories. For Kingdom Hearts this is all continuous. I don't see new gamers being interested in such a blatant mess of series they will be intimidated by all the story bullshit Kingdom Hearts 4 will no doubt have.
