Man, ignoring the combat changes which I am not against the levels being big ass open areas where to get upgrades for weapons you actually do need to explore every corner.

The game is absolutely harder than Nightmare on Eternal, especially if you play at 150% gamespeed. Even before touching the base 250% damage you take and putting it to 500%, which seems a tad ridiculous. The one thing I've noticed alot after replaying Eternal last year, is beyond prediction alot of projectiles straight up just home slightly towards you.

I like the game so far but is there a way to turn off that cheap-looking scratch/bite effect that pops up onscreen when you get hit by certain attacks?

That's a relief to hear. I just beat the fifth stage and about to get the dragon, but so far Nightmare in this feels like UV (what I normally play) in the last two games.

alot of projectiles straight up just home slightly towards you.

this has always been the case but its more egregious in TDA because the weird way the encounters are designed, enemies are "local" to their part of the encounter and dont move from there but they can still aggro you and just constantly throw shit at you from a distance your guns cant even reach. you basically have to have shield out any time you come out from behind cover since they'll nonstop shoot at you as well. it was extremely annoying on the night foresty map, by far the hardest or the most annoying map for me so far and i'm not even 50% into the game

My call from the first gameplay trailer was that it was both not enough like and too much like Eternal so nobody was going to love it, and I was right. It feels like a game of compromise.

For a game that's called "stand and fight" it's much, much less aggressive than Eternal. In Eternal you can zoom into the face of anything and do some combo bullshit and trash it all. This game's slow weapon swap speed and the more committal nature of almost everything you do makes that not nearly as much of a thing. It's also weird, Eternal's got the flame belch so that no matter what your playstyle or preferred weapons are, you can refill armor by getting close to something, but in this game there are conditions on getting armor back. You need to use certain weapons over others.

In general I can feel the lack of freedom of approach compared to Eternal constantly. I'll just say it, people who complained about no freedom in Eternal were just shit in the game. You were basically never constrained by anything in that game if you were decent. This game you feel so, so much weaker and less able to just riff and go ham with everything you have.

My thought of an Eternal sequel was always a game that focuses more on speed and scrappy evasion, giving up the brooling stunlocking shit that Eternal often boiled down to against big boys. Eternal absolutely never let's you play how you want and forces one solution on you at all times, the definition of railroaded garbage. The Dark Ages is so fucking refreshing, you can carry more ammo for your weapons and use whatever you want at any given time because barring a few instances every weapon is viable against all enemies. There's no chainsaw or glorykill reliance as ammo and health pickups actually exist on the map and are suitably abundant. The Dark Ages is how not only Doom should play and should be, but the FPS genre in general. Fucking soulless retarded tranny.

You have to stick with one weapon at a time because slow swap speeds make doing otherwise clumsy as fuck. Everything aside from shooting is committal and interrupts other actions.

I would consider it technical wizardry from iD yet again because it looks better than Eternal, has significantly more enemies on screen at any given time, and the environments are full of destructible objects and yet it never so much as stutters.

The enemy designs admittedly seem like Doom monsters in Halloween costumes, it's a bit off for sure. Gameplay is rock solid though, massive step up from how bad Eternal was.

For how much they went all in on story for Dark Ages, it feels weird to just have a bunch of disconnected missions with no hub area.

this is something that goes beyond the doom franchise and the entire fps genre. a simple organic concept like a player making their way through a single self contained labyrinth with enemies scattered throughout, no frills, make it through or back to level start just isn't something AAA studios do anymore. they're going to segment it into a series of distinct gameplay nuggets and stuff engagement mechanics into it.

We have decaded worth of single player fps like that. It's nice that doom tried to experiment with how to make fps single player a bit different. That's like asking why DMC 5 doesn't play more simplistically like DMC 1.
I had a good time with both 2016 and eternal. I think they pushed the mechanic in an enjoyable direction and really push the player to the limit. I'm not too sure about dark age yet but I'll make my judgement when I play it. From an eye test, I honestly don't mind the "parry" system but I don't like how they make enemies projectiles feel really inorganic to try to hold hand players.
