You realize both these games are doing the same thing, right?
Fromsoft difficulty uses in game choices. Summoning, grinding, certain builds being objectively easier than others etc. They let the player decide their difficulty in game.
NuDoom is doing the same thing, but the game style doesn't have the same flexibility. So they put a similar amount of flexibility in the difficulty options. Even nudoom players would throw a fit if there were objectively better or worse guns to use (by design, not by poor balancing) or stat allocation or ways to grind and become stronger.
Turning every slider up to max is like an SL1 run, and a no death run in either is a player choice.

I don't care for difficulty sliders, but Miyazaki's way of handling difficulty is also stupid. I have no idea why more games can't learn a thing or two from action games. Take a look at the modern Ninja Gaiden trilogy, for example. That's how difficulty settings in all games should be handled. It can't be that difficult to take inspiration from those games.

I like both. HOWEVER - I will say that the wests idea of difficulty sliders almost never works because higher level difficulties are more often then not, health sponges or you doing less damage while taking more damage. So more often than not, I'd rather a highly curated experience in terms of difficulty so it doesn't take me 30 seconds to kill a basic enemy unless the game is something like Monster Hunter.

I could not agree any more strongly with this sentiment, the western approach to difficulty is easily one of my least favorite aspects of modern gaming, absolutely brain dead normal mode that has no room to challenge the player, and a lazy jank hard mode where the main challenge is the tedium of bloated enemy stats.

This is the crux of the matter. Difficulty sliders are designed for people who want to say 'I beat the game' rather than experience the game. The developers cant possibly balance every difficulty option. With one set difficulty, everything is balanced around it, which is why Souls games saw so much praise because they were better constructed than most shit with difficulty options. The only exception is hard modes. These should always exist, no exception imo. Replay value is an essential part of most games.

It's also stupid because games have a difficulty curve, from the game ramping up encounters and from you learning and getting better at the game. You're not the developer. You don't know what the rest of the game is like and can't know what that difficulty curve is supposed to be. Fine tuning damage values, speed and everything at the very start of the game blindly is idiotic.

I think both options are fine.

Except the difficulty in FromSoft games IS customizable, it's just done in a much smarter way that lets players make the game easier without feeling like they're cheapening the experience for themselves by actually manually shifting a difficulty slider down. Any moron or disabled person can easily beat Elden Ring with a bleed build and a mimic tear, and they likely wont even realise they're playing on "easy mode"

Customisable difficulty and accessibility options is fine for plenty of games. But it's repugnant shaming a game that wants to be 'hardcore' into being maximally accessible, especially if that series is valued precisely because it's hardcore. It mistakenly takes value to be totally utilitarian, so it just leads to creative consolidation. Case in point - every game ends up having yellow paint everywhere, and the prestige of a hardcore series disappears.

This isn't a problem when they are slightly raised stats, but when devs bloat hp by x2, it's a problem.
