The Infiniminer story is complicated, not in its details but its emotional content. Looking back, most of my difficulty with the situation came from two conflicting ideas: on the one hand, I believe that Minecraft is a very different game that I would never have made, but on the other hand it’s obvious how Infiniminer directly inspired Minecraft, which makes it easy to conflate the two, especially when other people treated me like I’d somehow been wronged.

It’s been almost ten years since I created Infiniminer, and it’s taken almost that long to get over it. Having released a bunch of games has certainly helped, but I think the day that everything changed was when Microsoft announced that they were going to spend literally billions of dollars to acquire Minecraft. Events like this don’t happen often. How could I possibly feel bad about this when it was so unbelievable? Weirdly, I’m kind of proud of it now.
