Should Final Fantasy return to turn-based combat?
Should Final Fantasy return to turn-based combat?
For small scale spinoffs sure. For the big mainline ones god no. This shit died for a reason.
Yes.
No.
Should ascend to first person shooter.
atb ain't no turn.
Yes. Action goyslop needs to die. Fuck anyone who says otherwise
anyone that uses retarded meme buzzwords like that has never had a worthwhile opinion
final fantasy? nope. they don't know how to make fun gameplay. they'd go back to standard turn based and we already have all the ff backlog that does it better. even their reimagining of turnbased with bravely default was nothing more than a side project they left for dead. They need to look at expedition 33 if they even THINK about going back to turnbased...
No. They insist on maintaining Final Fantasy as their flagship series that they want to pour big budgets into, which I can't blame them much there. And for the budgets they do, turn-based games don't have a big enough market.
final fantasy has been fumbling and failing ever since they abandoned turn based combat, so you tell me
It should move on to steady top combat
Should Final Fantasy return to turn-based combat?
It would have never stopped being turn-based, if turn-based fans actually bought turn-based games.
No the combat in Rebirth is the best combat in the history of the franchise and only actual gorilla nigger retards disagree
Absolutely. They've been struggling to find a pseudo-action RPG system that's actually fun to play for years now with no success. It's always an awkward middle ground of mechanics that don't work well together, or it's just Kingdom Hearts-lite. Instead of constantly pursuing some new system, they could have spent the years refining what was there, then putting the effort they saved by using a tried and true system into making actually decent stories and characters.
Here you have Final Fantasy dead in the corner while games like Dragon Quest, SMT, Persona, Expedition 33, arguably even Baldur's Gate are thriving with turn-based combat. Look at the FFVII Remake; even with that pedigree and excitement from long time fans, it's still not doing as well as other games that just flat out used turn-based combat.
Take the turn-based system, make it interesting like newer games have, focus the remaining effort on making a good story with fun characters. It really doesn't have to be more than that.
This shit is single-handedly responsible for gaslighting everyone into thinking turn-based games are snoozefests
Why are you posting an ATB example, though?
This shit died for a reason.
The most profitable games of 2025, 2024, and 2023 were turn-based, though. Sounds like you've got a niche opinion.
You are full of shit. The only game that even came close to FFVII Remake's sales there is Baldur's Gate 3, and the overlap between CRPG and JRPG fans is surprisingly not that high. Just the first FFVII remake did around 3x the numbers of the rest. Now Square did want it to do better, but making it turn-based isn't going to accomplish that, that's clear if you look at the purely turn-based games only doing a third of their numbers.
Atlus is eating Square Enix's lunch.
Spoken like a true turn-based cuck.
It died for the same reason western publishers decided isometric CRPGs "were not selling anymore" - industry decided they would allocate that manpower to higher return projects.
i want a final fantasy game (the aesthetics, tropes, character and world design, etc,) but with the gameplay of SMT devil survivor. VN + tactics gameplay is great.
inb4 just play FFT or any of the sequels
i have and i want more. and i want higher fidelity for them.
They've been struggling to find a pseudo-action RPG system that's actually fun to play for years now with no success.
Rebirth's combat system is universally praised, because it is the best party-based combat system ever devised.
You just want to mindlessly spam the X button in vidya, because you have extremely low standards.
Yes, PLEASE.
Baldur's Gate 3.
Persona 5 alone sold around 10 million copies compared to the 7 million Remake had. And Baldur's Gate 3, like you said, sold way more, to the point of reaching about 15 million based on a quick search. Considering the hype surrounding Expedition 33, I could easily see lifetime reaching maybe 3 million or so. Considering the amount of pedigree that comes from FFVII's name, the amount of work that was put into it, and the amount of money, compared to others out there? It's really not that great.
While I didn't and won't say that making the FFVII Remake turn-based would have helped, I will say that FF has been struggling to find a solid gameplay system past FFX. And instead of just making something they know, they keep putting out games that hit audiences with mixed reception, often due to the gameplay itself. So, at the very least, going back to turn-based wouldn't hurt considering the success other games have seen.
The biggest and most profitable media franchise on the planet is a turn based game
Rebirth's combat system is universally praised
Right, there definitely aren't dozens of threads every week bemoaning the combat. No one's ever complained but me.
Come on anon. Even if you think it's good, which is fair, you can't ignore that it split a lot of people on the game. It's an okay system from my perspective, but saying it's the best party-based combat system ever devised is ridiculous.
universally praised
why would someone go on the internet just to tell obvious lies?
Cope and seethe, turn troon.
Turn-based died for a reason
Every year a turn-based game comes out that takes the entire industry by storm
Most common lists of best RPGs include turn-based games at the top
One of the most talked about games right now, on Anon Babble's front page, is a turn-based game
I want another hybrid system like XIII-3 that mixes both ATB and active postioning/block/dodging.
Yes, obviously. It's the only ones worth playing.
E33 praised to the moon by turn-based fans
barely sells and ships 2 million copies
Flops in Japan
TAKES THE INDUSTRY BY STORM
lmfao
You niggers are completely delusional
>Flops in Japan
Ah yes. Market where selling 200k copies is a commercial success. That massive market.
You mad that only 10K copies of this heavily JRPG influenced RPG were sold in the motherland of JRPGs? kee
Turn-based is dead and Square Enix clearly saw the writing on the wall. Either learn how to game or go and play Pokemon.
This style of turn based is pure dodo
All jrpg should have tactical turn based combat like xcom or front mission
It died for the same reason western publishers decided isometric CRPGs "were not selling anymore"
better sells 2mil copies
still a huge success since it had 30 devs to pay salary for instead of 300 devs + 400 upper management
x.com
STAGGERSLOP GARBAGE VII DEMAKE/DEBIRTH/DEUNION & XVI STATUS?
Yes and after seeing the overwhelming success of E33 they have no choice.
Oh wow, is this going to be the first time in history a mainline DQ game flops?
update the PIxel Remaster games multiple times to fix PR-specific bugs
still don't fix the scrolling judder that's present across all 6 fucking games that didn't exist in the originals
ALso only five million sold? So most people didn't buy one of the six games to make it an even six million?
Square Enix still makes low budget turn-based games, retard. They even outsell E33.
SE still doesn't feel obligated to return to turn-slop.
final fanrasy should have never moved past 1
same with dragon quest
yuji horii is a hack
breath of fire died because of these garbage franchises
best party combat system
Star Ocean 2 and 3
five million copies of six games @20 dollars each
How does this impress Square Enix?
The Remake trilogy comprises of only two games, and sales must be around 15 million by now.
They even outsell E33.
Doesn't matter when S-E still have all that upper management bloat to pay that the current CEO is trying to restructure the fuck out of.
Yeah, probably. If it wants to appeal to its prime audience, it should.
Until then the flops will continue.
bolt fist
no fisting action, uses his staff instead
shit game design
This shit died for a reason.
Turn based never died, the industry just collectively has a learning disability and decided that the best people to market RPGs to were people who don't like turn based combat or in-depth character/team building. Now that there's been a bunch of high profile successes with turn based games I hope they start making all of the action games that you like turn based so you can feel my pain while I talk about how great it is that they finally made your favorite series appeal to ME instead of you. While I don't buy it anyway and the series fails because it's still too action-y for me, of course
No, leave turn-based to SaGa the sister series. It does it 10x better than any FF game ever did.
Square released one of the best action jrpgs and one of the best TB JRPG systems 2 months apart (Rebirth and Emerald Beyond). Although honestly, Mana series should be using Rebirth's combat system but whatever.
Hear me out: a final fantasy with souls/kingdom hearts hybrid combat system, the plot of ff4/ff5/ff6/ff12, the level design of dark souls and the scale of elden ring, blue eyed protagonist, no woke or normalfaggottry whatsoever (looking at you, fedora in ff15), no "this is a fantasy based(cringed) on reality faggottry, soundtrack composed by uematsu, takeharu hishimoto, joe hisaishi and yoko shimomura, artworks done by amano and akihiko yoshida.
Coop areas like the crystal chronicles for DS.
*hitoshi sakimoto
The Mana series basically has no identity at this point. Could just let it die given they couldn't be arsed to even make the last entry themselves, and farmed it off to the Chinese.
Active Turn Based
Gee anon I dunno
Rebirth's combat system is universally praised, because it is the best party-based combat system ever devised.
It wasn't and it isn't. The best combat system in RPGs is Saga Emerald Beyond.
no, it's boring.
It's far too late for that, FF is forever the "experimental" franchise
Besides, we have SaGa to fill the turn based gap
You'd think that the Enix half of Squeenix would be smart enough to avoid the disaster that caused Square to go under in the first place.
But here we are. Pouring gasoline on a money fire expecting great returns.
which square enix exec made this post I wonder?
you're the reason nobody buys these games anymore you fucking retard. it should be the opposite
I hate this timeline but seeing the saga games get remade is pretty sweet
It doesn't matter if it's turn based or not, the main issue is that they are making piss easy games and 90% of the player base is no longer kids but adults. They have to understand that most players prefer an engaging challenging combat, regardless if it's turn based or action.
FF15 or 16 could have worked as unique takes on the series, but they are braindead button mashers (or in case of 15, button holders) not well designed action games.
yep. back to basics baby. take your action slop elsewhere
need to look at expedition 33 if they even THINK about going back to turnbased
never actually played FF
Retard kun. Stop posting anytime.
I can accept a return to turn-based as long as they actuall commit and don't do that half-assed ATB shit.
Literally the worst combat system ever conceived by man.
It'd be cool if they went back to the multi-hit system from the first three games too, though obviously rebalanced so agility isn't king and you actually have a reason to use heavier weapons.
they kinda ruined rosas sprite tbdesu, looks too much like celes now
Just give me SoP:Dadrock edition with Jecht. So I can abandon my son while Phil Collins plays in the background.
saying it's the best party-based combat system ever devised is ridiculous.
Name one game that did better.
