FF8 thread

FF8 is by far the best romance story.
Xfags go suck a blitzball.

doesn't give a shit about her in disk 2

obsessed simp in disk 3

You simply played this garbage when you were 10. That's why you like it

Whatever

What's the best emulator(on pc) and settings to play FF8 nowadays?
And did FF8 remaster ever get battle menus fixed to be 60fps?

Only realizing what you had after you lose it is a perfectly fine character development

play with randomizer

give monsters randomized abilities

caterpillar casts the end

it was pretty funny

realizing what you had

There was nothing. It's bullshit and cringe how whole disk 3 is chasing after rinoa

Recently replayed this on a completed save of mine and it’s annoying how Ultimecia randomly selects 3 party members to start her fight with and if it isn’t the ones you junctioned stuff on to you gotta let them die and be absorbed into time.

However I do love the threatening menacing castle song

Any more funny randomized mishaps? Like what if an enemy could do Lionheart or MY Final Heaven

I had no idea what I was doing as a kid with the junction system, but looking forward to breaking the shit out of it with the remaster now
What's the best setup to melt enemies

I don't think they could do limits and the end is classified as magic.
I remember in the fight against the fake president deling the bosses were shuffled and it was NORG

Fantastic soundtrack. The music of FFVI, VII, and VIII was peak Uematsu.

Like what if an enemy could do Lionheart or MY Final Heaven

I don't think limit breaks like are in the randomizer pool. The End works, because that's basically just a magic spell

Would it be possible for Omega Weapon to show up as Ifrit?

yes. I remember resetting because odin was at ifrit's spot and I didn't want to grind to kill him in the 2 actions I had before he zantenzuken'd me. I think the ifirit timer was different than the odin timer so it was assumed the odin timer was at 0

Why did they remake the song? Is there an ff8 themed boss or something in 14?

Not super directly, but XIV borrows from every FF given it's MMO nature. The Extreme is part of the one of the best raid fights ever made in the game.

Also it features Nomura's signature girl: goth raven-hair girl with sexo lips.

gaia.png - 876x704, 590.9K

I like the idea of giving it a replay but if I do I know I'll sink a shit ton of hours into triple triad

Moombas are so cool aside from Moogles, Chocobos and Cactuars, wish they made plushies of them

Complementary rage bait.

skill issue

Your own fault for not immediately removing the retard same and plus rules

Played FF6, 7, 9, X and 15

10 hours of FF8 got filtered hard

When did you fall in l0ve with the game at first?

1999

When I 1st saw the opening cutscene when it came out and I bought it since I loved VII

unfathomably based

FITHOS

It's interesting that FF8 and FF10 seem to consistently have threads on Anon Babble, more so than the other FF games. I think FF7 would too if remakezoomers didn't make that fucking impossible nowadays.

It's because are starting to realize 8 is fucking awesome

FF8.jpg - 1600x1060, 146.62K

Brothers and Quetzalcoatl are so much cooler than faggy Titan and shitpile Ramuh

file.png - 1200x600, 948.96K

7, 8, 9, 10 are peak FF

Diablos

Doomtrain

Pandemona

Cerberus

Eden

It certainly had some good one off summons.

Japanese Humor: The Game

Why do Laguna's squad have such consistently nonsensical interactions with each other? They're not the only example but they are by far the worst.

two teenagers hang out with eachother and gradually start to like one another

I'd say it's the most realistic part of the game.

I loved Odin surprising you every now and then

Diablos and Doomtrain should've returned

Definitely. Plus the game genuinely surprising you with Gilgamesh afterward if you had recruited Odin before Lunatic Pandora.

The game never really improves. The story sucks, the characters are forgettable besides Squall, Rinoa, and maybe Seifer and Zell. You are basically discouraged from leveling and the majority of your time is wasted on triple triad. Its only remembered fondly because of nostalgia

t. Marathoned the series a few years ago

Right here.

enc none.png - 1200x902, 463.09K

It had a very strong aesthetic and the gameplay made some bold choices that unfortunately didn't really pan out. I'd still take it any day over the safe and sterile slop we get these days.

JRPG without random encounters

What's the point?

It's not so much having it on permanently. But having the option when you just wanna travel somewhere and not have to deal with random encounters.

There's a lot of backtracking in certain areas and leveling up isn't a linear power scale in 8

It's been 50 years and you guys have FF8 threads like it came out yesterday.

The story sucks, the characters are forgettable

Someone junctioned with a GF too long

FF8 has one of the worst stories, but great game mechanics. Shame that Riona is one of the worst FF girls ever created.

I've played every FF including a good chunk of the side stuff and FF8 definately stands out in terms of designs that were actually being translated directly into the game without relying on concept arts, FF7 felt more like they were trying to translate these familiar concepts into 3d but FF8 felt like the first time they were actually being built into fully realized 3d models.

Also compared to FF 1-3, 5 and 9 ? FF8 had a pretty good story, it went off the rails but how it went off the rails largely still kept in line with the main cast and the overarching story.

I would compare the cast being adopted friends to the the terra reveal in FF9, the cast being adopted friends all along was a shitty twist but it maintains focus on the cast, you're either like "this is stupid" or "This is crazy" but you're thinking about our characters and the journey so far. Time compression is similar, it's weird and convoluted but it's keeps that same focus on Squall and Rinoa's earlier encounter in the flower field so Rinoa can save Squall as a true act of love between them.

Contrast this with everything going in a completely different direction, the world ending stakes that were already introduced go even further into some other planet that feels hardly related, Kuja turns into a completely different character. You know how Zidane Has a tail? That actually meant he was an angel of death created by garland, a character we pretty much know nothing about. Oh yeah also necron. Who is he? who knows. How does this serve anything that happened before? who knows.

FF isn't perfect at telling stories but 8 is far from the worst the series has to offer.

Also personally I loved the freedom that the junction system gave and haven't instant access to easy limit breaks was really fun. Also I personally loved Triple Triad wasn't just good, it was way better than most minigames in general. It's probably the perfect minigame

Gotta catch em all

the game doesnt deserve its music. im a simple man, for me its the battle theme and the boss battle theme

[Random]

Speaking of battle themes, The Legendary Beast is an incredible one that if you tear through Griever (pre-Ultimecia junctioning) too quickly you won't hear all of it.

youtube.com/watch?v=oW61WM0DDUA

Uematsu is a genuine genius.
I purchased his albums and game soundtracks he created. My praise for him isn't just some "investment fallacy" either; it's warranted and true.
Of his 1000+ tracks he's made, 99% of them are brilliant.

i played this game without ever understanding anything about it. i never used the weapons skills like shooting with the gun, i <wish but i didnt know how,n i didnt undferstand the magic system. i just headbutted my way through, the fight prolly took longer than they should have. made the game more difficult and more enjoyable in a way, goes to show that FF could use a difficulty setting

How the fuck would affection values even work? You've only done the Ifrit cavern with Quistis, the retreat from Dollet with Selphie and haven't even met Rinoa.

FF9 has its own problems and I think it suffers the worst drop in quality from the second disc onwards. You could probably make a case the fall starts after you defeat the final Black Waltz. FF8's problem is that a lot of the plot points that the game brings up don't get resolved in a satisfying way or at all. Why didn't we get more time with Adel? What's going to happen to Galbadia since Ultimecia is gone and she killed their president? What about Esthar literally being flooded with monsters? FF8 focused too much on the personal story between the party, especially since the amnesia reveal ultimately isn't that important.

I played FF8 first so I was incredibly disappointed to learn that some old crusty wizard was the lightning summon in nearly every other game.

kek, same

never remixed Premonition

I'm still mad.

Yeah that's true, my biggest problem with the story was that Laguna and Squall never have an actual moment together.

It felt like the game telling two stories was building up to that but it just didn't happen. It wasn't just nothing but less than nothing Squall never actually learns that Laguna is his father.

meant to link

I literally just finished 100%-ing FF8. It's not my favorite FF, but the music is nice.

Steamdeck is ready to 100% FF9 starting this weekend.

Junction your dick to your deck

I don't know the achievements, but you'll probably need more than 1 playthrough to 100% 9.

Why didn't we get more time with Adel?

Because the main plot point of Adel is her being an alternate host for Ultimecia compared to Rinoa

What's going to happen to Galbadia since Ultimecia is gone and she killed their president?

Seifer took over since he was the sorceress' knight

What about Esthar literally being flooded with monsters?

The most scientifically advanced nation in the world would be busier than usual but be able to handle it.

What's going to happen to Galbadia since Ultimecia is gone and she killed their president?

The people will elect an new one and move on. What more do you need?

FF9's story was written much more like a book.
FF8's story was written much more like a movie.
FF7's story was written much more like a video game.

Looking at that picture I could hear the Fossil Roo OST

I want to 100% x-2, I wish it had a separated list from X like ps4 had

I had completely forgotten about the cavern-insect monorail and seeing that image made me smile and listen to the musical track.

8 always needed 7R treatment

I love how realistic Squall’s character is. People in the military often say it’s just like being a civilian, then all of the sudden you’re getting shot at. His reactions are always well written, trying to survive is his goal for the whole game. There’s no grandiose reasoning like some evil that might affect him in the future such as Shinra, only the current effect of the powerful sorceress that he must overcome. All metered with the school he attends, the rules he must follow, the law he is trying to save pushing him along just as a real student.

whatever

Why were PS1 FFs so obsessed with mini games?
Does anyone actually enjoy playing these shitty card games?

Yes

Did some update add this or am I being fucking mandela'd? I played 8 and X on the ps1 and 2 back in the day, and played a good bit of both of them on the PC with their remasters over the past couple years. Not once did Isee any text being blue or yellow. Now just this past week, playing both games again and seeing this image, both games have this fucking nintendo baby pokemon "colored text for important things you're mentally 10 years old and have the iq of a potato so we need to point this out" thing that was NEVER there before.

Nothin personnel, Odin.

Chadfer.webm - 720x470, 3.04M

Is the remaster on Steam good?

6 is squarely in Anon Babble territory (despite all of these games being over 20 years old)

7 is hampered by the higurashi gou/sotsu-style "remake" and was obscenely popular in the first place

9 was anus and NOBODY cared about it

10 was the last actual final fantasy game

14 is just a shitty mmo that constantly leaks out of Anon Babble to the point they have stealth generals here all the time

That leaves just 8 and 10, with the occasional spinoff like SoP or Tactics.

Arguably.

models are obviously improved, basically early PS2 game quality instead of wobbly messes

backgrounds are sloppily upscaled because SURPRISE square didn't keep the original sources

replaces the midi soundtrack with the PSX compressed recording of the roland sound system

The latter is more subjective, but something like virtualmidisynth with a good soundfont would make all the instruments sound far better than the PSX version's music. The only exception would be the vocals and the recorded songs with real instruments, but I think the original PC version kept those.

Mad cuz bad.

Remember when FF games had badass secrets? XVI literally has not even one secret.

Squall is a retard. Quistis was better than Seifer's used goods.

Maybe there was cut content that could've made Balamb's beginning portion of the game longer.

8 had many problems, but this is legit one of the most badass things in the series.
And it's completely optional too, it's entirely possible to get there without even knowing odin is a thing in the game, and gilgamesh breaking out of the void rift from ff5 to take up the reigns.

Nobody does stuff like this anymore.

show you magic junctions anon. Those stats are horrible

I typically just let the game do it for me since I don't really care

They'd have to completely rewrite the beginning or have a different affection event later on, because only after the Timber mission you have all 3 girls in your party

You dont need Hit-J on Squall, because he always has 255%. Use Quake on something else

Bro... you gotta fix that shit up

For me it's the Lunar Cry.
From hearing about it you're likely to think they're just going to keep that as a background story event.
But no, you will look at the bloodred streaming ocean of monsters surging to the planet from the fucking moon, attracted by a gigantic weaponized crystal pillar.
And you will shelter from it in a badass dragon space ship with a huge gun.

It's a bit silly when you think about the monsters just chilling on the barren surface and flying together.
But as an event I still think it's cool they actually included it in the story.

84391299_p0.jpg - 1868x1080, 1.22M

I'll fix it once I get the GF's that I have to max stats. I'm at the part where you get separated from Rinoa after you get Ragnorok. I already got Bahamut and Doom Train. I have one last GF to get but I don't really care about that one since I have to draw it from Tiamat from the final dungeon or get it from Ultima Weapon. Who I can probably kill right now but I'm not that interested

FF8 and 9 both have a critical flaw of it feeling like the developers started dying of medical exhaustion the last 1/3rd of the game. When you look at Squares release schedule in the 90s, it's not surprising

I feel like tifa being a concerned friend turned lover and Dagger/Zidane changing eachother for the better to finally get togheter are better love stories than "guy keeps saving a ditzy cutie and later realizes that after all has feelings for her"

I wish you luck. Your stats are pretty low for lvl 61

This decision as likely made early into script writting before they even started coding cutscenes

Junctioning finally clicked for me. Any good spells I could get from Triple Triad before the first visit to Dollet?

What is FFIX even about? i never hear about that one, i don't even know who's the protagonist

Don't bother farming the AGA spells. They become instantly obsolete when you get diablo's time and status magic refine

FF8 and 9 both have a critical flaw of it feeling like the developers started dying of medical exhaustion the last 1/3rd of the game

I'm pretty sure internally they gave their games like a year and a half to max 2 to wrap up their development during these years. It's why these titles like 8, 9, Xenogears all feel rushed to an extent. It's actually very impressive how good and fun these games were considering that pressure.

Sky pirates masking as comedians plan to kidnap the princess, they become friends and discover autonomous weapons are being made, they travel the world to stop the weapon dealer.
The four protagonists are a thief, the princess, her bodyguard, a random kid who got there by mistake, thay have an amazing growth, chemistry and moments togheter possibly the best "base" cast in any FF.

Theatre troop escorts a runaway princess
Characters each deal with a particular personal struggle

I like how in cross game series, Squall is always depicted as the leader, despite being arguably the weakest out of the main protagonists. He’s not some super being or have some innate bloodline that makes him super strong. He’s not even a master at sorcery or combat. He’s just a regular guy who doesn’t even want to lead, but he has the most leadership experience so he steps up. It’s great.

like a year and a half to max 2 to wrap up their development

That was the standard in the pre-3D era as it was more than enough time but Square was late to adapt. It almost bankrupted their company.

Not fucking true. X has the best cast. 9 has a pretty good central cast but some characters are just kind of there and don’t really serve any purpose. Also Zidane being an alien is stupid and feels like an asspull of a plot to give him some connection to the bad guy.

Few companies made games that extensive back then though, to be fair.

I only liked the katana dude in FFX

thats the effect actually good games have especially when you were there for it. completely alien concept to zoomtards i know.

"...characters are just kind of there and don’t really serve any purpose"

Sounds like you're describing X's cast, Zidane included.

The cast in X all had some personal connections to the two central characters and none of them ever felt like they were there by coincidence. A lot of the games in the series feels that way, including 9. Vivi is a black mage prototype thing, Garnet is the last of the summoner, so is Eiko, Zidane is an alien race who is the final boss’ brother, and they all just happen to coincidently be in the same party. Doesn’t make sense. Why would they even pick up Vivi in the first place and keep him along? What are the chances that these special beings just happen to meet up together. It’s too many coincidences and ass pulls one after another for the story and cast to work.

I want to give your wife headpats

The themes of their romance are better integrated in the overaching plot so there's a lot more that reinforces it when looking at the bigger picture.
The nature of SeeD and sorceresses that plays out as the main story is directly represented by each of them.
In many ways they are opposites as people and in the end they're destined to end up mortal enemies.
This makes Squall's decision that he'll face anything to become her knight instead all the more significant.

Squall changes from someone who just wants to shut out the world and who doesn't care about anyone to someone who will take on the world, even including friends and allies, if it means he gets to keep her.
That's not to say that it's brought perfectly in the game, but him simply being a guy realizing he has feelings for a girl is selling it too short.

Yeah man, i still only liked the katana dude in X

pixel slopmakes

Fair enough, even though he isn’t really using a katana, and they do the thing where they just call a gaunt sword a katana to fit the the ronin aesthetics.

death

Give Squall a GF setup with STR-J and HP-J

Junction Ultima to STR until it's 255

Junction Tornado to health until you have 9999 hp

you will now routinely do thousands of damage per normal hit, and if you stay at like 3-4000 hit points you'll constantly get limit breaks because you'll technically have "low" hp in terms of percentage but you won't be low enough to have to worry about getting one-shotted

Also you can take whoever has Status attack junctions and junction 100 deaths. it doesn't work on bosses but they now insta-kill anything that's not resistant. You can do this with break, too

the Promised Land

The sound of the ocean can be heard in the distance.
A sea breeze gently blows across a meadow where pale pink flowers are in full bloom.
There is no sea to be seen. The whole surface is filled with vibrant green and pale pink.
In the midst of it all, a blue that seems to have been cut out of the sky can be seen. It was a girl dressed in sky blue clothing -
a beautiful girl. Her glossy hair fluttered in the breeze, sparkling jet black. A silver necklace gleamed on her white nape.
A silver ring in the shape of a child was attached to a chain and swayed against her chest.
The girl was waiting.

--Who?

she asked. It seemed as if she had been waiting here for quite a long time. Or a fleeting moment.
Time has no meaning. What's important is to remember who you're waiting for...
Suddenly, a doubt creeps into the girl's heart that there may not have been anyone she was waiting for in the first place. Suddenly,
the wind gets stronger. The warm sunlight is blocked by dark clouds, and cold air
dances . In the distant sky, lightning begins to flash complex patterns on the underside of the clouds. A little later, thunder roars
like the growl of a hungry beast. The wind also cries. As if to fend her off.
Fanned by her black hair, the girl uneasily places her palms on her chest. The hard feeling touches her fingertips. The lion's
ring becomes her anchor.

It's coming. It's sure to come. The girl vows .
He exists. And he is heading to where she is. Because this is the promised land.
Because it's the place they decided on together ...
A gust of wind sends up the petals, painting the field of vision a pale pink. In the midst of the beautiful storm, the girl opens her clenched small palm.
Enveloped within is a single, sparkling white feather. Carrying the girl's feelings, it is carried high into the air by the wind.
To the ends of the sky. Into the gap between time. To the one she is waiting for, hurt and lost.

Better translation from Grok.

Far away, the sound of waves can be heard.
A gentle sea breeze flows across a field blooming with soft pink flowers.
The ocean is not visible. The entire landscape is covered in vivid green and pale pink.
In the middle of it all, a patch of blue — as if a piece of the sky was cut out — appears.
There stands a girl, wrapped in sky-blue clothing.
She is beautiful. Her glossy black hair sways in the breeze, shimmering in the light.
A silver necklace shines on her white nape.
A silver ring shaped like a lion’s head dangles from a chain over her chest.
The girl is waiting.

— For whom?

She asks herself.
It feels like she has been waiting here for a very long time. Or perhaps only a moment.
Time has no meaning.
What matters is remembering whom she is waiting for.
A doubt creeps into her heart: maybe there was never anyone to wait for.
Suddenly, the wind picks up.
The warm sunlight is blocked by dark clouds, and a chill rises, urging her to leave.
Lightning begins to etch complex patterns into the belly of the clouds.
Thunder follows, echoing like the growl of a hungry beast.
The wind howls, as if to reject her.
Her black hair is whipped about, and she places her hand against her chest in worry.
Her fingers touch something hard — the lion ring — her anchor.

He will come.
He surely will.
She vows to continue waiting, so that he will be able to find her when he arrives.
He exists.
He is heading for the place where she is — because this is the Promised Land.
The place they chose together as their meeting point.

A gust of wind lifts the petals, dyeing her vision pale pink.
In the midst of this beautiful storm, the girl opens her small, clenched hand.
Inside it lies a single white feather, glowing pure and bright.
Carrying her feelings, it rises into the sky.

To the ends of the heavens.
To the rift between time.
To the one who is wounded and lost — the one she is waiting for.

Now here are the clues.
The prologue to the game shows a version of Rinoa described in this text.
She is trapped in the Time Compressed world. She doesn't remember who she is, she doesn't remember why or for how long she been there. The only thing she knows is that she is waiting for someone, not exactly who.
She is reliving the events from her memories. Over and over again.
This version of Rinoa we never get to meet inside the game.

Because the Rinoa at the end of the game, the one that we meet in the game itself and is there together with you in the Time Compressed world actually is actually carrying two rings dangling from her chain necklace. The one from the prologue and thus this text is carrying a single ring from her chain necklace.

Pic from the prologue. They do, in fact, span on the necklace. Calling attention to it.

The Rinoa we meet in the game, the one that is shown saving Squall from the Time Compressed world. The moment we see her the ending cinematic span to focus on her necklace.

It doesn't. That's why R=U is retarded. They want it to be true and they will mindfuck themselves into creating their own evidence for it.

Don't hate it, just giving it a hard time.

From the text describing the prologue we get to see that the Rinoa shown in the prologue puts her "feelings" on the white feather, knowing it will fly into the... timey wimey thing to reach Squall inside the Time Compressed world.
What happens when Squall find the feather and touch it? The most trippy ride in a FF game we have ever seen.

If that screenshot's from your game you're already overachieving. Just get on with the mission so you can access more GFs

Also what do we see when we first meet Rinoa? What is she pointing at? A crossing star?

What do we see when we first start fighting Ultimecia final form? Something that they included even in her concept art? The same crossing/shooting star?

Huh? When i finished this game as 15y old i thought its clear as day that Rhinoa is Ultimecia. People are somehow arguing of this?

Christ this is exactly what I mean in You fuckers overanalyse every pixel to make your headcanon work.

there are still R=U deniers

r = u has not only been outright debunked by the devs, they outright put ultamicia in the dessidia and have here state plainly that its not cannon.

it also wouldn't make sence in game based on everything we know about the world and characters

but the game is so dogshif in almost every respect that schitzos who played it when they were 10 have to pretend the theory is real anyways because its more interesting than the nothing story ff8 has

That about sum it up?

It's first presented as an ensemble game like FF6 where there's generic invading empire and mysterious, sex twink villain where ultimately the story is about each character's unique perspective on the conflict and how they grow from it.

Or that's what it should've been if all but three characters didn't drop off a cliff after disc 2. Seriously, the first two discs are some of the most phenomenal story telling in video game history followed by fucking nothing

Wrong, it was rebunked

Thye actual story of FF8 is the sealing of all Sorceress powers within the Time Loop and ending the Sorceress Wars for good.

Now here is the thing.
When Squall touch the white feather... he sees a version of Rinoa, but for whatever reason he is never able to see her face. He keeps seeing several versions of her, but her face is always blurred. We even see her in moments never showed in the game.

They've been hinting at it since the demo game.

I like stories of FATE, where nothing is learned. A play.

I hate stories of ADVENTURE, where everything is learned. A life.

source: your ass

IX was peak actually.

Yucknoa

VIII really does filter so many midwits because it can be a genuinely terrible experience if you play it "wrong."

start playing

ignore junction / draw system because it's new and confusing

figure you'll just grind levels like you always do in a ff

grind a few

enemies scale with you

game actually gets harder

have to spam summons to survive

don't even learn the best GF abilities until like disk 3 because you just left it at the default which is GFHP+ (aka the least useful skill for any GF)

decide game is boring and repetitive because you just watch the same summoning animation 500 times

And to be fair, the game doesn't really go out of its way to mention the level scaling and the skills GFs will learn by default almost seem to be goading you into using them as a crutch ( a decision I have never understood) but still. If you play the game that way it's your own damn fault.

Junctions aren't that much of a logical leap from materia and even if the concept is a little confusing at first the results are straightforward. You can see your stats go up or down immediately and the combinations are intuitive. Healing spells work best for HP and vitality, attack spells for STR, etc. It's a very transparent system. And as for the GF abilities, yes, the default settings are terrible but they show you how the skill lists work in the tutorial. If you didn't immediately browse the list as soon as you got the chance and notice all the awesome skills you *weren't* learning by default, that's just a lack of reading comprehension. In a game where magic = stats an ability that lets you refine magic should immediately grab your attention. Again, it's not a convoluted sysem. You just have to look at what's right in front of you

draw system

kys

Squall and Rinoa being fated to meet each other and all that is pretty central to the story, I can't even imagine what 8 would be like without that there and I'm a Selphiefag

Junctions aren't that much of a logical leap from materia

I think one problem with the junctioning compared to something like materia is that junctioning is all dry menus.
There's no interesting shiny icons or anything and if you get into the elemental and status stuff the English translation needs all these abbreviations that will make anyone's eyes glaze over.
Even a lack of readily apparent explanation can be covered if you put a few neuron activating interactions in the right place to make people want to engage with it and figure it out.

107080200_p0.jpg - 1994x2386, 1.77M

I can't even imagine what 8 would be like without that there

something million times better. Rinoa is trash and so is everything related to her

Rinoa is trash and so is everything related to her

The plebiest of pleb taste

go to sleep Nomura. no one liked your trash waifu

resorting to aislop translations

Fuck off.

waaah I have to THINK and engage with game mechanics

the correct way to play the game is to draw as little as possible and synth magic through the myriad of other ways you can.

Rinoa should just dress like how Ultimecia does all the time

need to go to the white sneed ship after visiting the orphanage, after beating Galbadia and its GARDEN just kind of disappearing

sorceress says "go to crescentia" or some shit

nothing in the game says a fucking thing about where this place is

They really couldn't have bothered to at least give Morrowind-style directions?

you've played the worst possible version of every single game thoughbeit

If R=U why doesn't Ultimecia recognise herself at the final battle?

why would someone not remember something in final fantasy VIII? IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE

Doesn't Edea say something like that it's to the north in one of the inlets?

I like FF8 a lot and most of what people complain about it either aren't problems for me or are actually positives for me
but the orphanage plot twist was really dumb in a way I struggle to reconcile with saying the game is good, even as a dumbass kid at the time I understood that plot point was strange

Ultimecia can't even remember her love. How is she supposed to remember her original self

90s

it was mainly a 2000s thing but ok

It's because you guys are too low IQ. Not only do GFs impact memory but would you recognize a grown as nigger you went to kindergarden with NOW? Ofcourse not. It's crazy that nobody thinks this far. Literal unable to spin apple in head kind of nigger mentality. You just adopted this opinion.

This but you just refine boss drops.
Granaldo + 3 Raldo fight? 18 Wizard Stones - 90 -aga
GeroGero? 8 Zombie Powder - 160 Zombie (matches Cura on HP)

Refining boss drops is the way to go, those 2 alone are relatively early and set you up for damn near everything else with ease.

Late 90s, early 00s yeah.

The prologue translated above shows that some version of Rinoa doesn't remember who she is, where she is, why she is there, and so on. Just that she is waiting for someone.

All the things she said

Yeah the materia system was more aesthetically interesting and just a little easier to work with in general. My point was just that the junction system wasn't some radical departure from what had been done before. It was a similar system but using spell inventory instead of items.

Although the one thing I found so, so much better about the materia system was its ease of use when swapping party members. You could get everyone a "core" setup that they kept fairly early on and move individual materia from character to character easily. In VIII it all has to go through GFs, you don't have enough to go around and you are switching parties CONSTANLTY so you have to just junction swap everything. In that prison level you swap parties like 7 times in 20 minutes, and every time you have to go into a menu and swap junctions back and forth. And you lose HP every time. They never completely worked the kinks out.

tfw.jpg - 600x498, 27.51K

Reminder that in the end Squall end up realizing that Ultimecia was a version of Rinoa, and that he just finished killing her. Pure kino. We even the sound effect of his limit break during the scene.

Can't say I've ever seen a worse placement than what he did with that Seifer, but I guess the Quistis forbode it.

Yup.

use magic lamp as soon as you get it

grind out enc-none

turn off random battles for the rest of the game

use card modding for everythng

game becomes a comfy adventure where you travel the world playing cards and having occasional boss fights

Triple triad will honestly give you almost everything you need until the ass end of the game

I fucking killed Ultima Weapon before I could draw Edel from it god fucking damn it I'm so retarded

Are you a q tard perchance?

Holy midwit. If you "engage" with the junction system, the game goes from awful to even worse.

Is there a mod to add vibration back to the remaster? At least when you pull the trigger in battles?

You can get Eden from the end dungeon too.

That's the shit way to play. I have more respect for people who Draw spam, honestly.
Is it effective? Sure.
But it's also boring af no effort min/max that trivialises everything.

Thats never a first playthrough though, that's afterwards when you basically abuse the systems.

I decided to just refight Ultima Weapon instead.

Now I gotta fuck up a bunch of Cactuar's to get all their abilities and reorganize my junction loadouts before the final few moments of the game

Can't speak for 10, but 8 gets so much wrong, is so indecisive about its writing and plot, and has one of the worst progression systems in the entire series, that you'll see threads on it the most between half the crowd that grew up with it and probably praised it off of nothing to begin with, and the other half that likely recently played it and are confused as to how anyone can like such a dysfunctional pile of garbage.

I think with being able to swap an entire characters junction to another it works quite well, as long as you do figure out that you need to identify sets of GF to keep together to form a loadout for a given party member archetype.
I played through the Japanese version that doesn't have the character junction swapping, man.
You're definitely right though that you still have to swap often enough that it's a chore. They did put in some thought with the Laguna scene characters simply inheriting active junctions I believe, but then they might still not have ended up how you might like it for them.
The jail sequence just has a lot of things wrong with it. I like it as part of the story but the way they have you go up and down it wasn't a great idea to begin with.

Go delete all the basic skills (GF/Draw etc. that they don't all need) and give them all the basic -Js so you can balance them easier.

She says something like "it's northeast in crescentia" but what the fuck is Crescentia? You have to look up a guide to figure out it's this random ocean crater.

start Laguna sequence

IMG_5632.jpg - 600x801, 59.72K

I think that’s the worst part of the game by far. Laguna and co. should have had their own junction setups.

Best grill. She's even cuter and sexier in KH2

Nah, it works just fine because it's the whole "faries" thing they pass it off as. They just needed to add the normal cast to the Junction exchange menu so you could fix it.

The magic/GF's etc are still there I believe? You just have to re-arrange them and sometimes it's not worth ruining your setups.

Doomtrain is so badass, looks like it came straight out of the Doom series, I guess the namesake makes a lot of sense in that regard

IMG_2346.png - 482x452, 253.65K

Nah, the 3 that sleep each time are those that go. If you had everything on Rinoa for example (she's never one of them), it never transfers and you have 0 access to it.
You have the GFs unjuncitoned and can put those on, but you don't have whatever magic she was holding on to. Which could be a problem.

My two favorite games FF5 and FF8 feature Minotaurs

Just now noticing the thing they share in common

IMG_2347.png - 240x160, 32.21K

I always remember seeing his face on the GF menu and he looks angry which would make sense given the name, but when you summon him it looks like he's sad/crying, more like he's running away from something

the game is beat the second you get him or meltdown then aura

How do you feel about RPGs with no random encounters but feature the enemies in the overworld environment such as Chrono Trigger, Mario RPGs, and the Mana series?

They basically reused that entire animation for one of the Summons in XII too.

Inversely, you start experiencing an equally game ruining problem once you do understand junctions, in that they completely trivialize the game. Something as simple as junctioning 100 water to your attack will have you curve most of the fights with little resistance, and there's much stronger magic like tornado and quake that will spike your damage up further. I actually laughed for a good bit when you fight Seifer at the end of disc 1, how he talked up almost 2 minutes worth of game, and then I one shotted him with a basic attack.
There's sadly no real way to engage with the system that results in a balanced experience. You're either struggling and going through hundreds of GF attack animations, or you crack yourself out and make FF8 look easier than a Pokemon game.

There was a Megaman Legends thread yesterday, which is from the same console generation as FF8, just wanted to point that out

most of the disc 1 fights*

There is actually. You just go through the game and refine boss drops.
Everything scales reasonably as you go through without Enc-None and you never massively outscale anything.
You can always Aura-kuken everything but that's besides the point.
It's honestly the most enjoyable way to play after breaking it 15 different ways before.

I should add:
Avoid the broken Card Mod cards obviously, but TT all you like. Maybe Card Mod the odd shit card.

The in-universe logic is linked to Ellone's powers being the way they are. Her ability is to junction the party members to the people in the past, so you would expect that their own juctioned attributes are carried over respectively, based on how junctioning works.

Story logic doesn't excuse poor gameplay though, so I also think they should have made it so that you could access everyone's stuff.

It's a prefectly reasonable explanation for why who got whose junctions/magic. I only menitoned the "fairies" because that's Laguna, Kiros and Ward's excuse and showing they're conscious of the difference.
You might be able to stretch that to menu conscious so they can't show the present day cast but that's... whatever.
But not being able to access the rest's was just dumb.

I found the explanation smart.

Ultimecia junctioned to sorceresses in the past, and when she controlled the sorceresses from the past she could use her own powers while controlling their bodies. Same way Squall is able to use his own abilities while controlling Laguna's body. Though in Squall singular case he isn't able to properly control his father's body, just feel what happens to Laguna but yet Laguna is still able to use Squall's GFs.

it's my favorite video game and I don't understand it

Played this game for the first time recently. Disc 1 is sick and then the storytelling completely goes to shit and just constantly throws random curveballs at you from fucking nowhere. Party members barely exist as characters and the junction system makes every bossfight feel piss easy while every other fight is for drawing. disappointing ass game.

Squall and Selphie literally bump into each other once you leave the classroom in the first few minutes of the game, I found that cute and adorable, and you can even choose how Squall responds to her after the fact.

IMG_5626.jpg - 700x700, 43.7K

Eh, even in the Sorceresses case it's more of a viewing but with more direct control similar to us as players.
Hate to drop a Morpheus quote but

What happened happened and couldn't happen any other way

It's strictly true even from Ultimecia's perspective, she is just both viewing and sort of acting upon the past but nothing changes.

quina is the best

Even some N64 Rareware games were obsessed with minigames

correct way to play is to only use draw for GFs, dont use any card or item refining, dont use aura or meltdown, limit 1 gf per character, and limit yourself to the physical draw points on the map like the devs intended. then you will need actual strategy to get through the game

There’s even a damn tier list on FF7 minigames

Details like this are what make FF8 the most human FF story.

I came to find it really didn't matter that much because Laguna always got Squall's loadout and that was pretty much enough to get you through whatever even if Kiros and Ward did nothing. The flashback sections are short and there's no particularly hard battles. It's even easier if you have enc-half or enc-none.

But yeah, even if it's manageable it's just bad design. Like I said, they never worked the all kinks out.

FF8 feels like a fever dream to me. I only beat it a few years ago, now, but the general plot details are already muddled in my mind. It probably isn't helped that 8 ends up being one of the more high-concept titles by the end.

There's sadly no real way to engage with the system that results in a balanced experience

Sure there is. You don't need to stock 100 of any spell in the beginning any more than you would need to grind to level 99. If you make no concerted effort to stockpile magic and spread the spells out to every character instead of making Squall the designated grossly OP killing machine the experience balances out nicely.

Every time I replay VIII I put less and less effort into junctioning too much too early because I came to realize it wasn't necessary and I'd been essentially overleveling all my previous playthroughs. The game *is* absurdly easy to break but it doesn't happen automatically. If you show some restraint it works out fine. I nearly got heemed by the Brothers GFs in my last playthrough and it was shocking to me because I annihilated them every time before that. This was just the first time I had gone into that dungeon without abusing card modding or magic refining.

Guy just soloe'd Odin of all things, people can say stuff about 8, but no one can deny it's just awesome nonetheless.

It comes in phases. It used to be you'd get some good FF9 and I think FF6 threads relatively regularly, but not so much anymore. I think in 9's case most people are tired of talking about whether that "leaked" remake exists or not and how much they'll fuck it up if it does.

Zidane was still refreshing for a Japanese protagonist cause he actually flirts with women and openly desires sex

ooo soft.webm - 940x876, 1.74M

It has a lot of crazy things happening.
FF8 does benefit more than a single playthrough, particularly if you're not reading up outside of it.
I've regularly recommended a playthrough with a guide because there is quite a bit of plot and character relevant content that you'd almost never find on your own.

Pretty sure it was because there is literally in-game books that get added to the Glossary since you can take the SeeD test to get more money each time.

an awesome uematsu track doesnt mean zidane is le deep

You can happily talk about 7. It's just that in thread context, fucking morons HAVE to bring up the Remake series of games just to bitch and moan.

the yellow and blue text was always there, as someone whos played VIII countless times since its release. youre just getting old and senile

between remake posting and coomer posting or both its impossible to talk about ps1 ffvii anymore. I miss the early 2000s when it was the most talked about game on the entire internet

You're right, but I think the main issue with junctioning is pretty much laid out in what you suggest doing. It takes plenty of trial and error just to find the sweet spot where the game's difficulty is a decent challenge, rather than being snapped in half by a limit break spamming Squall with 100 Ultimas junctioned to his strength stat or a miserable slog by drawing too little and spreading the spells around poorly. It's a game that's unfortunately hostile to first time players.

refreshing

That character archetype was a diamond dozen when it came out.

It's a doggy dog world out there, anon, but for all intense and purposes Zidaine was a stand out implementation of that archetype, and that's a real blessing in the skies.

It's a game that's unfortunately hostile to first time players.

I'd argue the opposite. It's actually very accommodating, if not rewarding, to just play through it, follow the story and stay on the path.
It's hostile to the stat sheet number crunching because engaging with its systems deliberately and with the intent to get stronger has it break under the slightest amount of pressure because it has so many methods to do so. Level grind and scaling enemies in particular being hostile to this as it forces you to engage in those systems properly if you fell back on basic level grinds.
It's actually rather well done as an entire set of systems if you accept that the results of it are the point.
Engage with it as much or as little as you want, but if you try to circumvent it by grinding levels then you will be forced to learn the systems at play.

Impossible. The timeline must have changed.

Can we talk about the better schizo theory of Squall being dead by disk 3?

kys

But i'm already dead anon

It took a while for me, maybe around the end of the first disc

That's a neat way of looking at it, although I would counteract that I didn't deliberately level grind and still ended up pretty high level by the end game just by fighting every encounter that came my way and doing most of the optional content. Only exception is I got turned around in the Brothers maze for a while. I guess if you just play the main story and only do some of the things the game offers, that's less of an issue and you won't be expected to make the most out of junctioning as a result.

I think both sides are correct, ff8 is genius but it’s also a dogshit train wreck
it has a great story but terrible characters
it has a great mini game in triple triad that it completely ruins with all the variant rules
the junction system is actually genius in that it rewards you for learning the games systems so you organically become more powerful as you engage with the game more and more, but the combat is still absolute garbage that you can completely turn off your brain for and the level scaling effectively punishes you for leveling while the junction system STRONGLY discourages using magic
ff8 is lots of absolutely fantastic moments, story beats, and ideas with an overall great vibe trapped in a dogshit game
best music in the series though

and doing most of the optional content

Yeah, that's where I fall off that too.
I do the refine boss items and that's it thing I mentioned earlier in the thread when I replay it these days. Good fun, straight forward, doesn't feel like cheese strat bullshit.
I just can't help always wanting to do everything before Lunatic Pandora.
At that point though, without fail, you are more than capable of taking on everything the game can throw at you for the rest of the game. Plenty of magic and junctions etc.
I also just really enjoy the boss rush at the end at lv 100 which is easy to find yourself at after Ultima

Ever since I was a kid I wanted a good ass replica of Squall's gunblade (The Revolver or w/e).
I still kinda do. This game's style-aesthetics were the exact sort of mishmash that people often and kinda-rightfully complain about in japanese media, but FFVIII is one of those few times it all comes perfectly together and somehow makes sense.

Why did Nomura's art change so drastically between FF7 and 8, and then stayed pretty consistent outside of clothing design for decades after? Like those first ff7 designs look like theyre by a totally different guy, but you could put the FF8 artwork next to KH3 artwork and they'd look totally natural next to each other

Eh, you can't really access the truly broken elements until later in the game. If you get too far ahead of yourself early you can just leave your junctions where they're at and progress the story until you're in a new area where the enemies are stronger.

Yes, you can draw 100 of every spell as soon as you encounter the enemy that has it if you really want to but at some point boredom and common sense should kick in and you would ask yourself "am I really supposed to be spending 30 minutes using the draw command on this one low-level enemy?" and "why am I still trying to improve my junctions If I'm one-shotting every enemy?" The game doesn't get completely out of hand unless you succumb to OCD and use every opportunity to draw and refine magic. The mechanics are just there to allow you to progress through the story. If you're spending 2 hours autistically maxxing stats instead of starting the next mission you were already overprepared for you're putting the cart before the horse.

And the game does let you do that but it's still a deliberate choice on the player's part. For some reason people seem to go full retard with VIII more than a lot of other games. Some guy on gamefaqs has a guide to get the Lionheart in disk 1. Fucking why? It unironically might take longer to acquire all the materials in disk 1 than to just play the game start to finish normally. And not only is it unnecessary but it actually detracts from the overall experience by making an already easy game completely laughable. But people do it. Autism is a hell of a drug

It was one of those games that either you loved it or you hated it

Grug no like formal names for things!

Sorry Grug, I meant to say "because bunga."

How do people rank the romance in FFVIII compared to the others? For me, it's

1. Cloud x Tifa

2. Zidane x Garnet

3. Squall x Rinoa

4. Tidus x Yuna

5. Locke x Celes

6. Cecil x Rosa

XV and XVI's romance feel so irrelevant they're not even worth ranking.

I remember seeing some guy who made a functional replica that actually had legit gun components and fired bullets. His conclusion was that it's a cool idea and you could possibly do some serious damage if you managed to pull off the stab + shoot combo but of course in reality it's very impractical. A sword makes for a shitty revolver barrel and a revolver makes for a shitty sword handle.

Also since it's basically a homemade firearm *and* a bladed weapon there's a quagmire of legal issues with making or owning them. You'd probably get a life sentence in the UK for it considering they arrest people for replica master sword letter openers.

They're meant to be blanks. It just uses the concussive force to vibrate the blade.

I don't know how to rank Zidane and Garnet because I feel like Garnet's an Elizabeth 1 type who's not entirely asexual but too uptight to actually fuck. And Zidane's a monkey. They flirted a lot but I don't know if anything could ever happen.

Now, Balthier and Fran? They were fucking. He 100% ate Fran's asshole. How could you not?

Good god...Balamb Garden is so cozy

The only downside is all the rooms are dormitories. Zell had it figured out though

live in comfy room in Balamb

When Irvine cant take the shot, too. It’s definitely part of the aesthetics that ff8 is attempting to evoke, a sort of realism.

"our" wife

shitty card games

IMG_5694.jpg - 600x453, 30K

Like all the PS1 era FFs, the game has the broad foundation for a phenomenal game but looks a little ugly when the walls are put up. It's been said so many times but Square just spread themselves too thin in the 90s so a lot of great ideas in the mainline FF games just couldn't be finished. Maybe Chocobo Dungeon 2 wasn't a game that needed to get made

The Gunblade the best example of looks really cool but is stupid asf if you stop and think about it

You’re delusional
Rinoa is barely relevant as a love interest
Tidus/Yuna > Cecil/Rosa Parks> Zidane/Garnet > Clive/Jill > Fran/Balthier > Squall/SHITnoa

Yes, but because of Laguna and Juila/Raine.

1. Tidus x Yuna
The best love story in FF bar none. Everything is built up gradually and sensibly so nothing feels forced and at the end you're feeling the bittersweet emotions of two people who managed to change the world for the better but are forced to say goodbye. Too bad X-2 and X-2.5 turned it all to shit.
2. Cloud x Tifa
An endearing childhood relationship ruined by vague plot points, a bad translation and an eternal shipping war
3.Locke x Celes
Forced drama and awkward baggage on Locke's part make it a tumultuous but eventually fulfilling love story
4. Cecil x Rosa
Two characters I really like but the relationship between them is anything but intriguing
5. Squall x Rinoa
Despite Rinoa's pushiness being the key to Squall finally letting his barriers down her character tends to rub people the wrong way and the development spikes way too hard between disc 2 and 3
6. Zidane x Garnet
There's barely any solid build up towards this relationship. If it wasn't for the ending I would have wondered if Garnet even had actual romantic feelings for Zidane. She has to question her own feelings about him and during the wedding ceremony to get through Conde Petit she's explicitly utilitarian about getting "married" instead of being embarrassed about it. Zidane is such a womanizer it feels like he just likes her because she's the most desirable woman he's come across.

junction STRONGLY discourages magic use

NOOO MY STAT MIGHT GO DOWN BY 1 POINT IN THIS EASY GAME WHAT WILL I DOOOO

meanwhile the game gives you like 5 different means for replenishing magic that are all simple to do

dumbest most fucking autistic argument that gets repeated constantly

zidane and garnet above tidus and yuna

whats it like to be brain damaged

Where's Fang x Vanille? or Lightning x Hope?

Hope is exclusive for Vanille

can we agree that infinite limits is a retarded decision

Tidus x Yuna

I loved their story in FFX, but the thought of them reuniting wasn't enough to make me sit through that garbage sequel.

(thinking cap) this fucking sucks actually

literal coolest thing ever

the level scaling effectively punishes you for leveling while the junction system STRONGLY discourages using magic

You're looking at it wrong. The level scaling doesn't punish you. If you're keeping up with your junctions enemies will scale with you but you'll still outpace their growth. And by not tying stat growth to leveling up they minimized the need for grinding. If you ground out a bunch of levels anyway and found the game more difficult as a result it's because you didn't understand the mechanics. Shit, they even give you an ability that levels down enemies if you want. There's nothing to complain about.

And the discouraging magic use thing is just people playing with their buttholes clenched. All low level magic is easily replaceable from the beginning. Use your fucking blizzards and cures with impunity, there's an endless supply. And even high-level magic is doled out like candy by the end. You can get literally everything from the islands closest to heaven or hell. Triple, meteor, flare, ultima, you name it. Unless you're spamming these spells in regular encounters for no reason you have more than enough to use them indiscriminately against bosses or higher-level encounters. The only real complaint about magic is how you can't select multiple targets for most spells because that makes it much less useful on a per-turn basis. But there's no reason to hoard it like some missable item. There are no spells you cannot restock. Going to the entrance of Shumi Village isn't hard

Fang x Vanille

Lightning x Hope

Balthier x Fran

Fanon romances need not apply.

At this point, I thought back to disc 1 when Zell mentioned that hoverboards could be used in combat. I thought for sure that the writers wouldn't have just planted that seed for no reason (Chekov's gun and all that), and I thought we would get some cool motorbike vs. hovorboard kino. But alas...

We just don't know.

There's barely any solid build up towards this relationship

It has admittedly been many years since I've played it, but this feels like total bullshit. I remember the build-up starting in disc 1, for fucks sake.

This type of writing is apparently too subtle for the average anon in 2025.

Yeah, tying it to HP% was a bad decision because in the beginning you have to flirt with death to use them and then once you can inflate your HP you can trigger them more or less at will.

Like a lot of things with VIII, I think they looked at what VII did, decided they had to do it differently just to be different, and then fixed what wasn't broken. The limit breaks in VII worked fine and didn't need to be changed

say what you will about X2 but this minigame offered innumerable undeniably primo wanks

what version of FF8 should i play?
from what i can tell the remastered version seems like the better choice even despite some "supposed" censorship and some model changes (even if they're still nomura designs)

i prefer the low res feel of the original desu, it’s got an authenticity to it that the upscaled remaster just butchers.

Just play the playstation version retard. It was the defacto way to play for 20 years. The gay remaster is unnecessary and just cheapens the experience by giving you a cheat menu.

giving you a cheat menu.

just don't use it

Kill yourself

i'm actually capable of free will so i don't do that

Remaster, and look for fagindus texture mods on kemono, don't give a penny to that faggot

Too tired to debate this retardation. Kill yourself.

Playstation version is better than remastered because outside of the models, everything else in the game is fucked up to the highest degree.

The battles are 15 fps, along with the menu so it's not snappy whatsoever.
Prerendered backgrounds are blurry as hell and they contrast way too much with the higher fidelity models.
Textures on objects in the field are VERY fucked up.
You don't have full 360 degree movement at all despite the PS1 version fully supporting it. Moving around with only 8 cardinal directions in this game is fucking ass.

The remaster is incredibly disappointing as a rerelease and I would only recommend it if you have no other means of playing the game.

XVI literally has not even one secret

I blame internet and wikis for that.

IIRC none of the remasters have force feedback and that alone makes the originals superior. Getting the rumble when you time the gunblade right was such an integral part of the experience it not having it really took the piss out of the remaster for me.

Also, the backgrounds in the remaster aren't in HD. They just slapped a filter on it and everything is blurry. The character models are higher res but that just makes them seem incongruous with the backgrounds. The FMVs looked pretty good, and the redrawn cards were a nice touch but overall there's no reason to play the remaster if you can access the original.

Cecil and Rosa are based, they actually fucked and had a kid. That’s my number 1 right there.

If Bartz claimed Reina, Faris and Krile ala Xenoblade 3 Rex then that would be my number 1 instead.
