I've been fine with using the Switch 1 for 90% of the time in half a decade, with the rare PC releases which were ports of console games that didn't make on the Nintendo console. Which also mean my game library on Switch is significantly bigger than my very old Steam account at this point. Switch 2 looks like the kind of thing that could entirely replace my desktop PC between the joycon mice (which mean eventual ports of RTS games) and everything else being dumped on Nintendo.

I think you can generally trust first party to deliver the best optimizations for their hardware, even Microsoft the least consistent of the three does do it often enough for their non-shit games. Nintendo's biggest issue is going to be convincing third party devs to optimize where most of the 9th gen games have fuck to almost no effort put technically into them other than turning on all the GFX and then turning on upscaling and resolution scaling in Unreal or Unity with complete abandon to hit 30-60 FPS.
Star Wars Outlaws for the Switch will be a good litmus test to see if that is the case or if companies will go the extra mile to optimize the game for Switch or not. My gut says no. And there have been also some CPU heavy games because of that where I personally think the Switch 2 won't get a port for a long time if ever without that work being done. Any of Capcom's open world RE Engine games like MHW or DD2, Baldur's Gate 3, Warhammer games, Hunt Showdown, or Helldivers 2. I think they are all lumped in that category. Not a lot but a lot of them are more recent releases so wouldn't be surprised to see GTA VI be lumped in too as with other future releases. So yeah obviously, if any of those games are a priority, would look elsewhere.

Emulators like PPSSPP and Duckstation can be done a phone these days, with the ability to pair a bluetooth controller and connect to a HDMI screen. It's just missing a mobile equivalent to PCSX2 to fully seal the deal for me, and devalue PC gaming further.

I always love the games on nintendo platforms (hence why I got a switch), and I enjoyed playing a lot of indies on the switch, but ultimately the steam deck is what helps me tackle my massive steam backlog of indies and older gen titles. it's maximum comfort, I can install mods and inject my own DLLs, etc..
the deck is the optimal device to play VNs as well (after admittedly annoying setup for the WINE bottles). I've finished like 7 sizeable VNs last year because of the Deck alone

The point is that even if a machine *can* boot these games, to insist that there's redundancy is implicitly pushing that the gaming experience is the same. They absolutely aren't.

PC always had ports. It has old ports of MGS2 and Silent Hill 2 and 3. It had the COD games and generations of old shooters. But as long as your goal is to clear the current console generation, you can achieve that in less money than it would take to pay for a console and its lifetime online services, barring the Switch.

Sobering reminder that Rise came out on Switch as an arcadey iteration on the core MH gameplay. It was in REngine and a much more stylized aesthetic because to this day, Monster Hunter World cannot run on a Nintendo Switch. The ports that do like the Witcher 3 look and run like ass compared to the original releases, and they are assessed almost entirely on their novelty as hard conversions and not recommended ways to play the game.

Digitalfoundry was wrong plenty of times but publishers have an even worse track record. I played plenty of console Xbox/PS games in the past decade and resolution is the first they lie about. Now that the Switch 2 can play these games from the upscale era anything publishers say is the whatever upscaled resolution. The internal resolution is way way lower in general. Both the Series X and PS5 has plenty of 1080p (and below!) games advertised as "4K".
The main issue with the Switch 2 is the internal resolution will always be very low and these upscalers produce way worse results from low resolutions. An 1440p game can look 4K like, hell even some 1080p games upscaled to 4K look pretty sharp. A ~500-700p game upscaled to a 4K screen will look abysmal, especially with PS4 assets.
Upscaling is not free, just because the system has hardware DLSS it doesn't mean it is free performance.
