It's an artsy French turn-based jrpg with parrying/dodge mechanics about an expedition to kill a godlike paintress that kills people every year. You can get that from the Steam description and trailer.

Popular? Given. Enjoyable? Sure. As good as everyone says and deserving of this much discussion? Nah. It's a 7.5-8/10 at best. The combat system is pretty fucking bad; pointless QTE push A at the right time for a small damage boost with a 1 dimensional Action Point system. The level design, while visually interesting, is pretty fucking mediocre and short. Enemy variety is pretty fucking pathetic, with, what, a 12-20 enemies and you'll be seeing the same enemies over and over and over again. The game takes 30 hours for the main story, but that's mostly because it just fucking drags, giving far less actual content in 30 hours than other JRPGs.
I mean, it's competent. It has pretty good characters, though all but half the team effectively cease to exist when Act 3 starts, with 1 of them not even having a companion side quest. 2 out 3 of the companion side quests are pathetically short, requiring just walking into a single large room and to a short boss fight.
About the only thing it offers is Alicia and Verso hating because of the ending. It's really over hyped because it's it's a half-way decent AA to AAA game that isn't too over priced being released in a drought where even half-way decent AA to AAA games that are not too over priced has been rare.

Not really, most of the praise come from people who secretly hate weeb works and are using this game as a weapon against Japanese media. "See Japan? THAT'S how you do JRPGs!". They couldn't be more transparent if they wanted. It's the same energy as trannylators who secretly hate Japanese culture. Of course none of this is the fault of the developers, who seem genuine appreciators of Japan, but there's no doubt that the game is being used for cultural warfare by a certain group.
