Warhammer elves took a lot of inspiration from it though and they're way closer to Moorcock with their use of alignments and chaos gods too.

Notice the flat colours, the toned down shading, the toning down or complete lack of masculinity etc. There is some craftmanship to it, but it lacks a lot of values. Also notice how the bottom group seems to be lit from both the top, according to their shadows, and also from the front.
Top seems to take various light sources into account, although not all of them seem visible, and none of them seem to shine down like a summer in Hawaii at noon, like to bottom pic.

Alot of fantasy writers are still allergic to including black powder weapons, despite the fact that, historically, knights, canons, and guns all existed at the same time.
In these cases, a crossbow is basically how you give a character a gun, without giving them a gun. While it takes some strength to pull the drawstring and lock it, a crossbow, like a gun, requires less skill to use than a bow. It also provides similar imagery when firing as a gun, which is often painted as being "cool".
