The only "mandatory" lives are miner, woodcutter, blacksmith and carpenter so you can craft new weapons, tools and armors to easily catch up if your other lives are falling behind in levels.
Alchemist is an exception since they are very self contained since need alchemy to craft their own tools and you're expected to buy their materials at the store for crafting.

it takes >70 hours to unlock all the terraforming tools, even more to get some furniture and recipes. You wont see any decorated islands for a couple weeks at minimum

you start crafting the best weapons whenever you get the recipe for true time stuff (which requires making a regular time recipe first)
the 2nd best recipes are from dark slates in the post game and barely weaker than true time and far less aids to craft

It's been forever since I played the 3DS game but I don't remember that game even having a story almost. I seem to recall there being zero stakes whatsoever. There was definitely some tedium in the new one's story but nowhere near as bad as the original. But yeah, no sidestories for the different professions is strange. If I had to guess, they put all that effort into the main story instead.

The hardest terraforming tool is locked behind 400 mining which you can get as a level 1 miner with a monster drop pickaxe.

Every single crafting and gathering one, absolutly 100% no contest.
For weapons it's more tricky because elements would dominiate but if you don't care for elements they are the best.
Light in my opinion is just hands down the best for element.

why do I *need* them for a 1000 grove? I've been doing my 1000 groves with 840 mining/woodcutting just fine singleplayer and multiplayer. It's way fucking easier to make food than it is to make legendary hoes or w/e.
