I was there from the first testfire until the minute it kicked me from the servers as they were closing. It has a certain FRESHness that the sequels don't quite capture. Devs throwing shit at the wall: the game in all its unpolished glory, and it all just werked.
The credits made me feel things too. Used to replay the final boss for fun just because the music is good and it was a little tough when I didn't have a hang on the aiming, so I saw them several times back then.

The only thing S3 has going for it is 24/7 salmon run if you're into that. Otherwise it is objective worse than 2 and especially 1 by every metric, but the main killers are netcode and matchmaking which are somehow both significantly worse than 2. It almost has to be on purpose, I can't imagine how it could be a legitimate problem they couldn't solve.

It certainly had its issues, but as a whole I just found 3 more fun to play than 2. Aspects of the gameplay like the movement/controls, UI, and audio design were polished to a shine, found a compromise with the rotation system by just giving you more queues as well as an option for more casual ranked so you could try out new weapons or just fuck around without worrying, much preferred having a lobby to wait around in while in queue compared to staring at a menu for like 3 minutes too (at least 1 had minigames on the gamepad), extra customization things were nice as well as continuing to shave down the grind for gear because for a game with an emphasis on fashion they sure want to railroad you into wearing dogshit for stats otherwise. Generally prefer the specials in 3 compared to 2 as well, since using the specials in 2 had the satisfaction of swinging a wet noodle, 3's feel more substantial
SR was also just kind of better, more bosses, harder in general, has the king salmon stuff, has its own events, has its own store (though the scale grind was positively ridiculous until like the last update or something). The monthly gear was meme shit that I never used but have to take sacrifices somewhere I guess.
1 is still the best Splatoon however

I understand why Splatoon 2 came out so quick after Splatoon 1 since the Switch released two years after it. I have absolutely NO idea why they made Splatoon 3. They could've just waited for the Switch 2 to come out and release it for that instead.

10 fucking years. Sweet mother of crap, it's been TEN FUCKING YEARS. Somehow, it still feels like Splatoon 1 was only five years ago. A full ass decade of what is arguably still my favorite new IP. For a given value of new, anyway. God, it's like reliving the final days of Splat 1 all over again. Now I might just have to go through my entire folder. This image right here is the very first one I ever put inside of it. I"m not even sure what to feel, it's this weird mixture of happiness and melancholy. All these fucking years playing this game. Honestly, I wouldn't give up any of it despite all the hard times. And there were hard times, this series is still the maddest I've ever been playing a video game. No other series did that to me. Not Street Fighter, not Counter-Strike, not TF2, not Monster Hunter, not any other game that could conceivably piss you off. But Splatoon did, because it made me care so much.

The series' prospects don't look too good after what happened with 3, but the next iteration could help turn it around. Either way, odds are I'll still be there to see it through. It's just too damn fun, especially after we all finally got to play together with the advent of pools. So much fun. And of course, I still have my sweet little girl. It came out right when I graduated and turned 18, it was the first game I bought with my own money. I went to Best Buy and bought Splatoon, GTA V, link between worlds, monster hunter 3 ultimate and a 3DS xl, it was amazing.

I would wait until 2 in the morning when my parents were asleep and smoke weed in my shitty PT cruiser then come back and play Splatoon all night long with Japanese people online while Trailer Park Boys played in the background. Thinking back on it fills me with a sense of nostalgia and I wish I could experience those days just one more time.

Same here on both counts. 3 had objectively worse netcode, and structured its gameplay loop on battlepass nonsense. On top of this, it didn't have any active innovation. Splat 1 started the series, and throughout its lifetime created several new weapon types and ranked modes beyond launch. Splat 2 added salmon run, used shifty stations to spice up splatfests, and added yet another ranked mode. Splat 3 added some new movement tech, but didn't add a new ranked mode. It expanded on salmon run in several ways, but ultimately it was just more salmon run, not a truly new experience. Splatfests were less than they had been, with custom stages being rare and bootleg burst bombs not being added until near the end. I could go on, but all in all it just seems like a poorly implemented expansion were they threw away a lot of the good they had done before and then only sometimes replaced it with something else. Just a classic case of one step forward and two steps back.

No, the hub is the best part of Splatoon 3. It’s so detailed and full of personality, I can almost envision what it would be like to live there. No, 3’s problem is the map design. Every map for most of the game’s lifespan was just some variation of a Tetris block, so no matter what map you played on, it felt the same.

Not really I was 14 at the time and that really does feel like ages ago. Splatoon 1 rocked though, it just instantly clicked with me during the little beta thing they did and it's stuck with me ever since. I'm glad it's really developed into a Nintendo mainstay.
