It's just that anime games are mostly low-quality in terms of mechanics, or even generic in artstyle.
A rule of thumb I use is if a game is better or worse than the Nep series (an extremely low bar) in a demo. If no demo is available, it must have an outstanding artstyle and some gameplay that jives with me to want to play it.
An anime game I recently liked was Last command. Holocure is also primo.
