I'm playing starcraft for the first time and currently doing the Terran campaing and I just make nothing but marines, tried doing some tanks and goliaths but they don't seem to be worth the cost. They're so cheap and do crazy damage, what's the catch?

Dark Swarm is probably the most bullshit thing in the game but not to any overwhelming degree.
Honestly Id find a way to buff Queen/Devourer/Scout/maybe Firebat. Even then Bats are used somewhat, and queens show up from time to time.
Scout and Devourer just suck and either needs to do more or cost way less.
Make scouts 175-75, and reduce ground attack cooldown to 25.

The gameplay, like the graphics, was a product of its time, not a conscious design choice. Nobody at blizzard sat down and brainstormed the perfect amount of units per control group.

Changing the unit select cap would have had huge impacts on balance, and changes like that would have killed the game for any bwfag. Starcraft will never become a hit again, no matter how many qol features you try to implement, so appealing to the existing crowd was the right choice.
Blizzard did everything right with the remaster.

Sunken colonies take 20% longer to build
Add a border to the burrowed zerg unit sprites so they can be seen on the ash tileset and it can actually be used
Add an alternate version of the snow tileset so it doesn't rape the player's eyes so it can actually be used
Make dark swarm more transparent so it doesn't hurt player visibility
Let workers use Hold Position and Patrol if you press the hotkey, instead of needing to be grouped just because there's no space on the unit card for the physical button nobody clicks
Add a tiny doodad for mapmakers that spreads creep under itself as an alternative to neutral spores
That's all I can think of. The game is better and more balanced than it's ever been so it doesn't really need gameplay changes.
