Tears of the kingdom being a massive flop. Breath of the Wild was a huge step in the right direction but they did fuck all with it and basically turned what should've been DLC into a whole seperate game. Open world is the direction Zelda should keep going but they need to stay creative with it.

I'd say it was Skyward Sword. Originally the series lost a lot of fans from the jump to 3d and the design changes for link. People were unhappy the series became linear and cinematic with OoT. For OG fans, Link to the past was their ultimate game. For the people who's first Zelda game was OoT, they were completely satisfied by either Wind Waker or Twilight Princess. Nobody liked Skyward Sword. It doesn't have fans, it has apologists. People who grew up with ubisoft Zelda have mashed potatoes for brains so they don't count.

The Xelda franchise can be divided into 3 major camps, with some overlap. There are fans of the NES classic, who prefer a top down 2d game. The last installment aimed at this group was A Link Between Worlds. Then there's the OoT fans who want linear progression and dungeons. The new camp are people who like clearing enemy camps and collecting flags in assassins creed, but are too homosexual to play assassins creed. Open world is the death of any franchise artistically (MGS) because all open world games play the same. The failure of Skyward Sword (not even children liked it) is what made nintendo mix up the formula which led to a bad assassins creed knockoff with tacked on crafting and weapon durability for the minecraft audience.

Yeah I can be a Skyward Sword apologist too. It had great albeit derivative visuals (it's a good fusion of both TP and WW), it has a great uplifting soundtrack, there's a couple of standout memorable dungeons/bosses but ultimately it's a broken ass game that doesn't hold a candle to any of the other 3d zelda games. Literally broken because if you didn't have the wii motion plus it was clunky as hell simon says gameplay.

Something similar actually happened with Twilight Princess but you had to either send in your entire console or SD card for the fix. That was before Nintendo went gungho with Channels/apps beside the Virtual Console.
