Old games would make use of "Alpha Blend" for transparent textures, which is, basically just a simple form of making things transparent, but it has a lot of issues with displaying other transparent textures that are beneath each other, so hair couldn't be layered properly, thus leading to them having to actually 3D model the hair more in blocks instead of making it more "realistic" with the appearances of lots of individual strands.

"Alpha Scissor / Clip" would sometimes be used as well, and, while alright and could display other textures planes under each other, without sorting issues, it looked ugly and low quality because the edges would never be smooth and always looked like a weir cropped piece of paper.

"Alpha Hashed" is the newer one and what most engines are using now apparently because it's supposedly the "best" choice to fix the alpha sorting issues and weird 'cropped' look of the edges, but it's dependent on high sample size to work as intended, which is why it's recommended you always use the best possibly for of Anti Aliasing when playing these stuff, because those give better sample rates, thus helping hiding the weird grainy dithered look of hair and other stuff that use 'Alpha Hashed' textures. If you play without AA, or a lower setting of it, the issue will be more apparent and look worse due to you having a lower sample rate for the texture to pull from. Devs usually just don't seem to bother playing around with the settings for this though and just slap on the TAA vaseline smear as an 'easy fix'.
