This isn't actually true. There's performance upgrades that are free.
The paid upgrades are for games that they've added content for. Like expansion packs. Kirby is adding an entire like 20 new levels. Mario Party is adding an entire new expansion. Zelda is kinda bullshit I'll give you that they added a phone companion app. But the logic is the paid upgrade is only for shit they've done an expansion for.
Regular performance upgrades are free and are coming for Pokemon, arms, captain toad, Mario odyssey, links awakening ect ect

really the only reason Nintendo has a thriving hacking community is because of Pokemon, don't really expect much to come of it until a Pokemon game exclusive to switch 2 comes out. ZA is on both, although knowing GF the exploit will probably be in ZA.
You don't "need" to buy this either. Most of the library so far are Switch 1 ports, and they are getting Switch 1 releases which will play fine on a Steam Deck.

4k has an impact on smaller ones like 50 inch but they can generally compensate with whatever up-scaling tech they use. You don't actually need 4k.

Obviously piracy is the best option, then you can play it on various things.
The leap between 1080p and 4K is something you notice for sure even if you have a monitor. Going from 4K to 8K I'm not so sure about, but I haven't done that yet so I shouldn't be commenting on it.
Switch 1/2 hardware shouldn't go near 4K unless it's a card game or something simple like that.
Just bear in mind, Nintendo consider buying second hand to be piracy.
That's why it's probably beneficial as a consumer to limit support of them right now. Their business ethics stink right now and really they need a wake up call before it's too late.
