Vengeance is better at everything except the aesthetic theming. SJ's a close second though.

Auteur game
The gameplay fucking sucks. The battle system is a huge step down from press turn and demon coop essentially cutting the roster of usable demons in half in the early game. The dungeons are full of time wasting gimmicks like one way doors, hidden trapdoors and you spend way too much time hugging walls looking for hidden doors and switches. Literally the only fun part is the resource management.
Strange Journey is entirely carried by the interesting setting and general plot. Even the soundtrack is mediocre compared to the games that came before and after.

Played the original on DS but never finished it. I was disappointed by the lack of 3D on the 3ds remake. But otherwise, it's still a cool game. Does get really tedious, though, if you get lost and don't know what to do next. Much easier on 3ds too. But man I really wish they would have implemented the 3d effect, what a missed opportunity to make the dungeon crawling look more immersive/cool. Still haven't finished it, playing through smt vv right now, at the part where everything went to hell and had to aquire the 3 keys to enter some dungeon.

They butchered every side but neutral and just made them bad ends even more so than every other SMT game before and after it (except 4 which took cues from this sadly)

Mechanically the game was fun to me, man. I love press turn but I also like what they did in SJ, I had a good time.

The issue is that there's legit no reason anyone sane would ever go with chaos and law because they both make it very clear that humanity is basically dead in those endings. They legitimately had to go back and retcon in Redux why any non-physical or mental humans at all were around in both for the plot to even work.

1 and 2 are extremely basic by comparison. You can auto battle everything in 2 except for the few bosses that reflect phys. I still like them a lot but let's not pretend SJ isn't a huge evolution for the series.
Only tendies hate the NDS though. REAL gamers love it because there's an insane amount of kino 3rd party titles that tendies ignore because it's not muh 1st party shit. They'd much rather just play phantom hourglass and then complain that the NDS was shit

Press turn literally ruins the series and turns it into a one-way simon says massacre where the only real challenge comes from not getting wiped before figuring out a weakness in an enemy comp. Demon coop sought to fix this, and almost did. Press turn otherwise only works when you add copious RNG to the mix and everyone hated smirking, because ultimately SMT became a casual ass series instead of the Pokemon blobber it was meant to be.

SJR
SJR completely messes up the themes of the game, though. It goes from a message about humanity needing to pull themselves together out of necessity (hence why Law/Chaos are extra batshit this time around) to something else entirely.
Strange Journey was always about the Sisyphean struggle. R just adds new dimensions to it.

I don't think it's fair to say SJ took a sisyphean view to humanity's struggle to better itself. It left a clear uncertain, but hopeful message, at the end of the day. Keep in mind that if you are just playing base SJ, there's nothing to contradict what Gore predicts about the future, for example, when you go neutral. It's interesting that SJR flips the script on that, but it's also a total rejection of the original SJ's themes, which I don't care for, personally.

How we feeling about the Raidou remake?
I personally think the original desperately needed one since the gameplay was so abysmally boring.
Everything else should be left untouched however
don't love the changes to the artstyle but it doesn't look too bad
1 is the best story and now it will have 2's best combat. Easily the best Raidou
