Viewtiful Joe 2 may not be as good as Viewtiful Joe 1, but is it really THAT much worse?

Did it feature Dante from Devil May Cry?

I didn't like the team-up attacks fucking with the gameplay flow, but other than that I still enjoyed it, especially given how short the first game was.

Unlock Dante: Beat the game once on any difficulty (PS2 version only)

DAMNIT, I had them on Gamecube, didn't know this was a thing.

VJDante.jpg - 540x578, 46.31K

Honestly the series in general had to be Dee Bradley Baker's best VA role.

So this means Joe canonically scales to Dante right?

Blue has good taste

We got Okami 2 instead of VJ3

I don't really like Okami, but I kinda hope it does well because I know Kamiya wants to make VJ3. It would give him more leverage with Capcom.

We still got four games out of the series, which is more than I can say for Okami and its bastard handheld spinoff Okamiden, or anything else from Clover.
Despite thinking VJ:DT was pretty 'meh' despite the technical accomplishments it had.

i never played anything but the 2 mainline games
what else even was there?

Henshin a go go baby

Red Hot Rumble, a more multiplayer focused game, and Double Trouble on the DS, which has the worst music in the series, and feels off due to 30fps, despite adding a screen-split mechanic.

Double Trouble also had the problem a lot of DS games have that makes it near impossible to play if you're left-handed

but is it really THAT much worse

no, iirc, when i got the game, i was kinda disappointed that they didn't really try to innovate stuff on the 2nd game, it felt more like an expansion of the first one than a sequel. also the story of 2 dragged

I just used the thumb strap my DS came with and had it dangle between the screens until I needed it. Iirc the game paused during any touch interactions.

Kamiya is a hack. The only decent games he ever did were RE2 and DMC the rest is trash.

The problem with VJ2 is there's zero replay value. With every loop of VJ1, you unlocked a new character, usually with completely unique mechanics. I don't remember Silvia's deal, but Alastor's meter would constantly drain when transformed, and Cap Blue wouldn't have warning icons, so you had to read body language. So it got harder each time, and it was cool because of that. I don't even remember if VJ2 did anything for you on competition except NG+ with your bought upgrades.

Incorrect, because VJ1 is incredible.

I remember seeing an Xplay episode about this game. I remember they really seemed to enjoy it. Shame I could never play it though. I need to emulate it sometime.

Yeah, you could almost call RHR a Smash Bros-like. It was a party game with a pretty large roster. And surprisingly really accurate movesets for characters like Charles, Hulk Davidson and Gran Bruce... single player bosses formerly never designed to be playable.

Emulates great on Dolphin.

It's really fucking bad

sylvia isn't fun at all and joe is the exact same outside of a useless grab move so sylvia mainly exists as the extra step you need in order to shocking pink and to remove electric barriers in whats otherwise just viewitful joe 1 again

all the new enemies are just some variant of "remove my shield or I'm impossible to kill" and because of complaints the last game was too hard the levels are way more focused on puzzles and platforming then fighting so you can't even enjoy playing joe as much as the first game

there are more six machine sidescrolling levels and they're worse

the story is a bigger focus but it sucks more, the monster bosess have zero personality and sylvia just nags joe and the enemies the whole game so nobody is allowed to do anything cool, joes dad isn't as compelling of a villian as sylvias dad was - alastor quoting DMC1 directly when he powers up was pretty kino though

something about the visuals are less appealing too, i'm unsure if this is an artstyle thing or if they cheaped out

I did like the unlockable challenge rooms though

sylvia was speed mode, she naturally runs as fast as mach speed and practically teleports with it on but she does less damage and takes more to the point where untransformed she can just get deleted from full health by big hits

I do seem to recall she got knocked around pretty bad. But I think some of that is my memory of her awful "Record" move in 2. I LOOOOVE taking double damage.

I remember playing RHR and beating it, but I don't remember anything about it. It wasn't a very memorable game.

The era of "nagging girl character because they can't think of anything she adds to conversations" was pretty bad. It may come naturally to writers, but it's not a path you should take.

A lot of my memory of it is fuzzy too, aside from a couple characters. IIRC you have to keep beating it with everyone to unlock the entire roster which is pretty tedious. Maybe it was more fun in vs. I just didn't know a lot of people to play with during the Gamecube era.

I don't really get it because sylvia is pretty cool in the first game, she just wants to kiss her BF, gets a little pissed that he was deliberately goofing off and forgetting about her during the game instead of rescuring her, and then wants to do cool hero stuff too

then in VJ2 she just seems like she doesn't want to be in the game at all, like they took her not being interested in joes movie and didn't play the rest of the game

RHR was also made with the anime in mind. Kid Blue and Sprocket were directly from the anime. I vaguely remember 4kids having issue with it (including censoring Joe's henshin pose). I don't think it ever got fully translated, which left it in a weird state with RHR.

(including censoring Joe's henshin pose)

Can't have an extended middle finger in a kid's show now, despite him forming a W between the thumb middle and pinky.

Or renaming Six Machine to Machine Six because it can sound like Sex Machine

Yeah, but basically every major character from the series made a showing. Even Jet Black and Bloody Rachel.

4kids always overcorrected. They edited scenes just to edit. For example, in Pokemon, they often removed even ENGLISH text off the frames because "Kids didn't like to read." Their CEO said that, I shit you not.

358444.jpg - 480x679, 71.79K

"Kids didn't like to read." Their CEO said that, I shit you not.

For that era? He wasn't wrong.

If you're in children's entertainment, it's pretty fucking bleak if your faith in children is that low. And for the record? Pokemon the game is ALL reading.

the era of harry potter releases being huge events and kids reading naruto fan translations online

he was extremely fucking wrong

Was 4kids involved? I know the anime aired alongside their other programming on Kids WB but I know it didn't use their New York pool of VAs for the dub.

Harry Potter came out five years after the Pokemon anime, and well after Pokemon Red/Blue. There's a huge fucking difference between reading a manga and reading a book also.

We're talking about someone who removed ALL words from a frame, like "HOSPITAL" from a sign.
I think bringing up manga's limited words still proves him wrong.

For that era? He wasn't wrong.

It is more true now than it was then. WTF are you on about?

compact game design

great sound design

fun and fast

nice gameplay gimmick

no skill ceiling

cool bosses

rating system

cool stages

over the top action

Is Viewftiful Joe the perfect game?

I'm left handed and I never really understood this issue.
But then again I never understood most of the left handed complaints so maybe I've secretly been ambidextrous the whole time.

Yes. Yes it is.

All I could have asked for were some challenge modes/Bloody Palace equivalent. Otherwise it's just seeing how stylish you can be while replaying the game on a harder difficulty.

And the funny thing, the games are rated T which is 13+ so the games were not meant for kids.

they often removed even ENGLISH text off the frames because "Kids didn't like to read." Their CEO said that, I shit you not.

He was a dumb shit anyway. Reading class in school exists for a reason for kids to learn to read and removing text from the shows hindered to learn to read. Good thing his business went tits up because he fucked with Konami and Konami ended up fucking him in the ass to the point to bankrupt 4Kids. He fucked with the wrong bull.

It's an extremely underrated game, for certain.

I never knew it was Konami that ended them. Pretty based, even if they've fucked up many times over the years.

It'd be perfect if they cut the sidescroller level.

What did the game have in it that warranted T? I don't recall any swears or blood.

"Cartoon Violence" and "Suggestive Themes"
The first speaks for itself, but maybe the second was about Sylvia trying to snog in the beginning cinematic. Basically the only thing I can think of.

It's funnier then due to the game's initial difficulty options.

KIDS.jpg - 960x720, 170.03K

I know there's a subbed version of the anime out there somewhere, but I can't find it.

A shame Adult mode scenes weren't actually spicier.

When I was young I remember choosing Adults and thinking I was doing something bad.

Nah, 4Kids wasn't directly involved with that dub, which is why it feels so different from the usual early-2000s anime lineup. It aired on Kids WB, yeah, but it was handled by Ocean Group (from Vancouver), not the NYC 4Kids crew. That’s why you don’t hear the usual suspects like Dan Green or Eric Stuart. It also explains the slightly less butchered script compared to, say, early One Piece.

My only gripe I had with the games was the annoying ass "JUST GO FOR IT!". Jesus Christ it really got irritating after the first reel. If the games ever got remastered, add an option to turn it off and just show the objective info.

Yeah plenty of Sylvia upskirt in 2. Even in the first game Joe and Sylvia make out in the theater in the opening cutscene.

And then you unlock V-Rated and Ultra V-Rated.

while he's in a movie at least yeah
he's at the very least capable of going toe to toe with alastor, the actual demon behind DMC1's sword

The problem is just that Viewtiful Joe 1 does everything nearly perfect with Kamiya as director, and the new director just ignored much of his game design and added in a bunch of little things that slow the action down, make it less fun and made the boss battles boring slogs more than challenges that force you to creatively use your powers. If it would have been the only game in the series it would be easier to playthrough and enjoy.

bayonetta ironically suffers from this too, bayo 2 begins to copy devil may cry even harder than bayo 1 already did with a devil trigger like mechanic and how enemies behave

Bayo 2 does it much better than Viewtiful Joe 1, Bayo 2 is great, a different take that actually has benefits to it's design changes much of the time in return for the trade offs..

My only gripe I had with the games was the annoying ass "JUST GO FOR IT!".

low test

*Viewtiful Joe 2, my bad

hating JUST GO FOR IT

bro ..

I felt so ripped off. Viewtiful Joe was supposed to be a Gamecube Exclusive (so was RE4). But then they undercut GC fans and give PS2 players an exclusive.

Fucking unbelievable.

It was such a low-budget inclusion that all voiced lines were just DMC1 JP dialog but played backwards.

No it fucking sucked. Tired of hearing that voice grating my fucking brain and should've had an option to turn it off. It really got annoying after completing the first reel. Other than that the games are fucking awesome.

this series was incredible

JUST GO FOR IT!

JUST GO FOR IT!

just replace the audio file with gay moaning sounds. that seems to be more up your alley.
fag.

Wasn't there a cartoon show?

JUST GO FOR IT

VJRHRSilvia.png - 996x1000, 384.1K

levels takes too long

washed out colors

weird chibi style

it's a solid 8

all of the bonus characters are just dialogue from that character but backwards

levels takes too long

Hold the Speed power down.

washed out colors

That's the PS2 port for you, play the Gamecube release.

weird chibi style

Only thing I can say is I don't mind the chibi style, but the polygon count on the character models are ridiculously low for that era, which looks off at times up against the texture work.

I have both on GameCube.

the once in a millennium Viewtiful Joe thread

I was here. Love you my bros. See you next time.

You're a hero too, Anon.

vj-84.png - 512x384, 439.75K

I've played both PS2 and GC versions. GC will always be the best way to play VJ but damnit, I like my Dante campaign in 1 ps2

a bunch of unlockables

ranking system

no level select

???

Two was ok. i just hate they nerfed sylvia compered to the first game.
