Games with no map are designed with signposting in mind, zoomer; the game world is created with distinct landmarks for acclimation, roads have legible markers/signs spaced at sensible increments, and NPCs give (more detailed) directions. Turning off the HUD in RDR2 is not the same experience.

Super Metroid is a game that doesn't hold your hand, but it has a map because it's important to allow the player to orient themselves and track where they've been, and you only see areas you've been too and you only get the chance to see unexplored areas once you find a given area's map room.
Cut-Down on map markers and quest indicators that make a map feel more like a checklist sure, but asking the player to draw their own map and track where they've been by hand is just a massive waste of time.

Games should have both immersion and inworld signs and OPTIONAL magic arrows and maps. There's nothing wrong with having plus if you can turn them off and still navigate. But realistically, game worlds are much bigger now compared to something like Gothic 1 and npcs have daily routines so you couldn't tell where the person is realistically.

I did it for Myst recently, and although it wasn't strictly necessary, I think it added to the adventure feel of the game. I think it is good that some game devs are rethinking how things like this can be additive to the experience.

One of the biggest problems with gaming is that game developers are taught (and game players by extension) that constant streamlining, QOL, and similar items is objectively "good design", when that it often isn't the case. It is just done that way to water things down to the lowest common denominator and make the most sales.
