rex was a fine character for what the story of Xenoblade 2 required for a protagonist
Despite the occasional seething on Anon Babble, I do like that these days most people have accepted that 2 and 3FR were the high water marks for the franchise so far.
Rex is just an extremely compelling protagonist, the world and character designs of Alrest were amazing, and the story was top notch. A fun ride, with a very fun cast of characters from start to finish.
XB2 is the only XB game with a good combat system

I just made it to chapter 8 and I love the sense of scale in the Xenoblade games. 2 being my second one.
The one thing I'm confused by is why the hell are Almalthus and Malos fighting against each other if they want the same thing. If both of them just want to burn the whole world and everyone in it, why is Almalthus trying to use Mythra to kill off Malos and Torna? So he can do it himself?
The antagonists in 2 are very entertaining but easily have the worst set of motivations in the entire series, half of the time their actions make zero sense and trying to make sense of them just creates other massive gaping holes in the narrative so it's best to just go with the flow and enjoy the game for what it is.

They don't want the same thing. Malos Wants to destroy everything because he doesn't know how to live beyond the vague feeling that he is meant to destroy. He wants to get revenge for Jin, whoes life he ruined. This is his attempt at connecting with someone in a feeling that he can understand.
Amalthus Wants to meet with God to see what the point of suffering is in life and to become his divine messenger, ruling over mortals and trying to make the world not have suffering. He is mad at the world and wants to destroy things in his lashing out over his mother dying and nothing getting better, even though he has full faith in God, but that is just the base feeling covering up his sadness.
It's the typical anime trope of annoying dweeb picks up a harem of hot chicks. The average Japanese corpo power fantasy.
Amalthus views himself as God's chosen, so it's his role and right to do so, not anyone else's

Malos is Amalthus' blade and inherited his misanthropy, he literally has no personal skin in the game, he's simply a reflection of Amalthus' innermost desires free from having to pretend in front of society.
Amalthus hates the world and humanity because a bunch of assholes killed and cannibalized his mother during wartime, and his further attempts at redeeming humanity only made him hate them more when the guy whose life he saved went on to murder a family.
Jin is a massive retard who allied himself with Amalthus' blade in order to fulfill Amalthus' goal because he's angy that Amalthus killed Lora, it's as retarded and nonsensical as it sounds.
Mikhail is another retard who blames Mythra for the death of Milton even tough Milton was visibly killed by Malos' attack, and has allied himself with Malos for some unexplained inane reason.
The other two idiots are just there because the base game needed bosses.

And while I still prefer the world of Bionis and Mechonis just as a concept, I really, REALLY like these characters. It's very easy to see why the porn overshadowed everything because damn, but at the same time these are good characters. Except Tora.

Yeah XBC1 was world focused and XBC2 was character focused in my mind. But XBC3 was tying to juggle both but not as well.

Yeah it feels like even though the Xenoblade 2 cast is larger, there's less dead weight among the cast. I like the XB1 cast but if your name isn't Shulk, Fiora, or Melia then you're getting crumbs for characterization. Meanwhile XB2 does a great job juggling Rex, Pyra, Mythra, Nia, Poppi, Brighid, and Zeke. I wish I could get more out of Dromarch, Morag, and Pandoria but damn for a cast that large I gotta toss them their flowers.

Why do you think Malos and Amalthus want the same thing? Even in the prequel they wanted different things. Malos' will is a reflection of Amalthus' worst feelings, not a copy of his goals.

Rex is more mature than Shulk by the end of the game. Shulk's character doesn't change and stays an oblivious crybaby, while Rex matures and gains the approval of God rather than killing him while accepting the death of his wives.
