The quintessential Welsh Arthur is for all intents and purposes most likely a combination of several folk heroes and characters from all across the British Isles merged into a single great protective/messianic figure, who was then commandeered by the French, whose adaptations and fanfics form much of how we see Arthur today.

The reason people keep searching for the "true Arthur" is because for a large swathe of time across British and perhaps French history, people genuinely believed that Arthur was an actual singular historic figure of some sort. Of course, many people also knew that a good amount of his stories were fanfiction, but many people believed that the original model must have existed, so much so that in modern times, a lot of people take it for granted that he was a real person whose story just blew completely out of control. But no, he was always just a weird hodgepodge of a bunch of different unrelated shit, greatly helped along by the fact that the majority of Welsh stories back in those days were oral, meaning almost no written records survived to the modern day. There probably was no "King Arthur", and there probably was no Roman general named "Artorius". Well, maybe the latter existed, there aren't any surviving records of such a figure that match the stories.

There are various different stories of the Holy Grail War, but almost none of them are as acclaimed as Fate/stay night. There's Fate/Apocrypha, Fate/strange fake, Fate/Red Line, Fate/EXTRA, Fate/Samurai Remnant. Of these, the only one Nasu wrote waS EXTRA.

It's really mediocre.
The characters are completely flat, MC is a boring errand boy who constantly gets foreshadowed to being a fightfag but exhibits zero qualities of one, and is a gary stu in that he can go toe to toe with Servants for no reason and also kills Musashi in a duel by using Tsubame Gaeshi.

No, FGO's nature as a game (HSR suffers from this too imo) just causes so much friction with the narrative that the majority of the memorable moments are outside of fights, often right before or right after the fight.

The only fights I recall that begin to approach a similar level are main Ivan fight (mostly due to the presentation working off the narrative) and some of the calamities in lostbelt 6.
