Calling it now, game of the decade. How many people have even played it though? Maybe a few hundred? Made by four or five autists just for love of the game. Absolutely Patrician.

We already discussed parade to death on release you slowpoke

Thief is my game of the century and The Black parade was so good it ruined most other FMs for me. Maybe there will be another expansion like this in my life time.

This is it. As good as it gets. It revived the fm scene a bit on release but idk now. Need to check out TTLG to see what's currently going on

what if we made every map as labrynthian as Thieve's Guild

and made all buildings 6 floors

less is more
your mod is shit

you probably think The Dark Project is better than The Metal Age, don't you?

I really really really wanna play the black parade but, I can't get through the second mission of thief 1 cause I find it too scary, it makes me so sad because I am in love with everything looking glass has made, espacially the original system shock!

fags had to wait for a youtuber to tell them that its god

I learned about it through a YouTuber too tho :[[[ mandaloregaming my beloved

OP here

I just haven't had time to really sit down and play it the way I like, so I waited till now. Hell, I've only just finished mission 4. I probably won't be done until sometime between august and december.

How many threads on the catalog aren't even videogames rn? or some gacha shit? C'mon let's talk about THIEF.

less is more

It's not. Getting lost is the fun part, doofus.

just man up, dawg. It gets less scary, but also it regularly gets way, way spookier than that.

Il try to do so dude, I really wanna appreciate thief, what are your thoughts on system shock 2 anon!

what year do the thief games take place in?

I liked it a lot, but if you don't spec right you can wind up softlocking yourself from progressing later in the game. iirc I was unable to repair my weapons or something and there was a robot that I had no way to deal with other than killing it or something and I just gave up.

I've heard that SS2 is actually a lot more dumbed down than SS1 which is funny because usually people complain about LGS-inspired games being dumbed down from their LGS inspirations (like Dishonored being a dumbed down thief or Bioshock being a dumbed down SS2)

a lot of thievery takes place during the black parade

not surprised

I realized that I really don't like collecting obscure loot and this is the ultimate manifestation of that.

It was okay. Black Parade seems like a very uninspired product for something that apparently took almost a decade to craft. Just big fuckhuge levels that go on forever till you're sick of them. No interesting gimmicks, no new mechanics, the fact that every level is an homage to Dark Project missions feels stale, and Dark Project usually did it better. Top 10 FMs on thiefguild.com mog nearly all of BP missions taken in isolation. Comparing the garbage second mission to the Sword is laughable. The best missions are ruby height, keeper library, and double castle with frankenstein monster in the basement. Which on a minor note - I can't even remember mission names cause they all got pretentious names like Where Old Faces Fade. The what? I remember all mission names from T1 and 2 cause they were simple and descriptive.

Discussing a mod is too meta for me but if I want to play thief which one should I play? Is it so great compared to all the stealth games that came since then?

What I'm out of the loop what's wrong with mandalore? I don't use twitter and iv always been a really big fan of his content.

Thief 3 is a soft casual entry that still retains series identity
Thief 2 has the most focused stealth design
Thief Gold might brutally filter you since it features a lot of weird experimental levels that are the legacy of the game's fucked up development history.

Thief 1 & 2 are the best by far, but depending on your tolerance of early 3D, those might be too outdated for you since you won't have the nostalgia goggles for them. Deadly Shadows is alright, avoid Thi4f at all costs.

thief 1 and 2 play better than the third one, don't listen to people saying that's the good entry point. 6th gen games designed around the xbox as the primary platform have aged worse than most late 90s games on pc.

It's not tho? I played some other FMs and they were really super 'loot in crazy places that make no sense'. I've been playing TPB on expert and haven't had a problem hitting the loot requirement. I do compulsively try to visit every room in a level though. Although according to the stats I don't, because I usually only get just a little more loot than the requirement.

TPB isn't a mod DESU. I'm 4 levels in and except for the voice-acting it's as good or better than the OG games. Maybe a liiiiittle less tied together on story, but I'll wait to judge that until I'm done, the OG games took 4 levels to get going as well. And there's some stuff that's incongruous with canon like a mansion that is somehow more crazy-pagan-insanity than Constantine's, which doesn't make sense because I KNOW YOU CLICKED THE SPOILER AND I"M NOT GONNA SPOIL THAT PART. People who played 1 and know the story understand why that doesn't make sense. But also, it's kinda 'who cares?' because bigger crazier levels are better for gameplay. If you have to lower the story/canon bar to raise the gameplay bar, so be it.

Basically the games go like this:
play Thief gold, but look up which levels were added later, because they kinda break the pacing and don't mesh with the game (but I still like them a lot)

then play thief 2. This one is more focused on stealing shit and theiving than otherworldy stuff. I actually played this before I played TG, but you can really get away with playing either first, though you'll enjoy the story more if you go 1>2.

Then play TPB because it's the real sequel to those two.

Dark shadows is a novelty and 2014 isn't thief.

Nice. I just started TBP a couple nights ago. I'd have played more but my power went out last night. I'm on mission 2 and it's amazing so far. I think it might surpass Thief 2. The first level was maximum comfy city exploration and the only way it could have been better was with snow. I hope some of the Dark Mod FMs are this good because I'd like to see Thief on a more modern engine with more robust scripting.

also when I say the voice acting isn't as good, I mean just the main voice actor is only like 7/10 and the OG VA was 10/10. I heard this issue before I started and it's actually not that bad at all. Otherwise all the NPC chatter is just as good as the originals.

It's fiction that doesn't take place in any year. It seems to be based on an 1800s Victorian era England, though.

no way, the vibe feels way earlier than 1800s. 1600s with basic electricity maybe.

I just did mission one on expert and came out with a little over 1000 gold exploring like I normally would. I needed 850, and the level had like 1600. It's really not bad.

I've only played a handful of FMs, but do they usually have new mechanics and gimmicks? The ones I played were highly rated and didn't have any of that.

Not a chance. Look at how people are dressed and the kinds of cobblestone and masonry work the city has, as well as the iron gates and manors with guards. That's pure 1800s England.

since you won't have the nostalgia goggles for them.

I played them for the first time in like 2020. I liked Thief (loved some levels, didn't like the tomb raider levels) and absolutely adored Thief 2.

1800s England

pseudo-christian knights in full plate, criminal guilds, wizards, prisons with underground dungeons, zero firearms

Dark Project was originally called Dark Camelot, its supposed to be arthurian times but they added a bunch of steampunk to make it stand out better.

6th gen games designed around the xbox as the primary platform have aged worse than most late 90s games on pc.

They aged worse than 5th gen console exclusives, too.

I was in those threads, you just never saw me.

idk I played an FM once and it sucked ASS. When I watched a youtube of the mission it revealed that necessary loot was on roofs in the tip top of the level's box, there's literally no in-game reason for it to be there, it's just for autists who try to get out-of-bounds. Chalice of souls was it. And the level's traversal was super lame, it didn't feel 'lived-in' like a real place the way TG T2 or TBP do. It just felt like someone good at thief platforming put together assets and didn't think of any story or background.

Name the FMs you think are better than TBP.

no dude, if you look at the clothes and the furniture and everything, it's clearly earlier than that. picrel is 1800s british military uniforms. They had stopped using chainmail by the 1700s I think. Also there's no guns at all. it's 1600s latest.

Yes.

fuck i'm stupid

Is it so great compared to all the stealth games that came since then?

none of those games are as good at stealth as Thief. It's the peak of the genre, without doubt.

Unless you like 'systems' that do the work for you, like seeing through walls, marking NPC patrol routes, etc.

avoid Thi4f at all costs

My AMD card decided to stop playing Thi4f for me. It came out right after I finished TMA and I was hungering for some more thief. I really wanted to like it despite "TAFF YOU" and the DmC memes tied to it.

full plate

Hammerites aren't in full plate.

criminal guilds

Yes?

wizards

Like I said, it's fiction. The way society is structured, the architecture and the general technology level including materials and objects in homes are all clearly 1800s. It couldn't possibly be any more 1800s. Bringing up original ideas everyone already knows they had at first and moved away from as the series progressed doesn't change your lack of familiarity with time periods and anachronisms as opposed to clearly fictitious additions.

Guns are a gameplay thing. And in Thief 2 the robots shoot cannon balls at you. There are also explosive mines. The stonework and the streets make it very, very clear that it's 1800s England, as do how the homes are built. Hell in 2 you have a fucking shipping yard with mechanical doors.

Metal Age is supposed to represent an unnatural leap in technological progress that endangers the world. This isn't a natural development of history. In Thief 3 things are back to rather medieval condition

Want to do them thief 1 & 2 best way to get both playable again on modern hardware

medieval condition

You genuinely have no idea what that means. Those roads and buildings aren't even close to medieval. They're about 300 years after the end of medieval.

Dark Project from GOG or Steam, then patch it with latest TFix (this also adds mod support). You're done. Same shit with T2

kk thx anon
