This game is a hot topic but seriously, everyone who hates it is being a contrarian. It's got some of the best gameplay of the tank era. Great level design and range of enemies. Also, it’s the only classic RE in 3D aside shit like Outbreak. Perhaps the only downsides I could think of is that it is way too easy with the ammo drops and the knife hitting on every frame. I beat this puppy as a kid and didn't even think anything of it, yet it somehow has this reputation of being frustrating? Fuck I don't know how you can play RE1 and then say the item location's and objectives in this game are confusing. I'll defend this game because I think if a lot of you actually went into the game you'd like it.

It's pretty decent, I'm inclined to agree. One thing that works against it is that the maps of the older games were a lot tighter and it worked to the genre's favor, CV has pretty extensive maps that feel kind of bloated in comparison.
Also Steve. Holy mother of god, fuck fucking Steve. There's few games where simply removing a character would improve the game in its entirety, but this is one of them.
Old game were pre-rendered so they had to be tight. CV utilized 3D to its fullest.
Yeah, it's obvious they wanted to make the most of the Dreamcast's capabilities and it worked but at the same time they kind of overstepped with the map design. Backtracking in the PS1 games was fine, doing it in CV felt like a slog in most instances.

The Bandisnatches are easily the most lame and yet also most annoying tier 2 enemies in the series, the fact that they can clamber anywhere and hit you from two screens over with their stupid Stretch Armstrong arms is some serious fucking bullshit.

Because Flagship didn't write an infinite story for Capcom. RE1 is very much self contained and only left the door open to a sequel just in case. That case happened so Flagship wrote Capcom the rest of the story and that was STARS taking the fight to Umbrella after Raccoon City goes boom - the end. Only the RC survivors were meant to be recurring characters and the series was supposed to end after the 4th game. But when Capcom saw that they had struck gold with the franchise, every entry selling more and more, they ended their cooperation with Flagship, moved the writing inhouse and made sure that nobody died in a way that they couldn't be brought back. I fully expect Capcom to bring Wesker back again. We already know that cloning exists so maybe they have a Wesker clone in some lab next to the anti-aging serum. And if all fails they are going to remake RE1 again.

Oh, I can tell you why this game is disliked. It's simple really, the Dreamcast sucks. I enjoyed the game, but it was a chore to play. The controller sucked, and listening to that teeny fan trying its best to push the summer heat out of my DC was constantly annoying the entire time I was playing
The majority of Chris's portions is the canon route, whereas Jill is basically eye candy with a horny fandom that draws you into the narrative.

I don't like CV and love the original PS1 trilogy. I like the mansion and Raccoon City setting more. Wesker coming back was a terrible choice which pushed the series in a way I never enjoyed.
I'm inclined to agree that not committing to character deaths is lame writing, however Wesker is the best villain in the series and didn't get cool until after RE1 gave him super powers. I'm just thankful crapcom hasn't brought him back again after RE5 through cloning or something stupid.

I love the sprawling complex in the first half, so many quest items but I was frustrating the first time, backtracking trying to find what goes where, hence losing all my ammo in the process.

The only section in the game where heals are ever necessary is the running from Steve monster segment. You can beat plane tyrant in 5 seconds with 15 explosive bolts.
