Gatekeeping requires structured cooperation, which is easier said than done when dealing with autistic nerds on the internet. And at the end of the day, we live in a world where the state of gaming is of the lowest priority. The market will eventually crash and, upon its revival, be niche again. All we can do is wait.

Gatekeeping at this point needs to happen from the game and/or genre itself. Look at the RTS genre for example.
