Most of gaming pillars in FFX are shallow, the level design is a straight line, the gameplay is so basic, the rpg mechanics are paper thin and controls are an afterthought.

I've always been pretty picky on Symphonia's cast. I like Lloyd and Zelos but didn't really have a strong attachment to the rest of the characters. Like both games' stories, but Symphonia probably has the better overall story themes and what it's trying to go for. That said, I have no issues with Vesperia's story and I personally love it just as much.

The main issue with the game is how it was never actually finished so we get a narration of what should have been disc 2 along with the battles being too frequent(that sewer level...). combat is worse because..

It's a turn-based game where there is very little to think about. Lulu casts spells on slimes, wakka throws flying enemies, tidus kills the wolves. They all usually die in one hit from the "correct" character. The EXP share system forces you to switch characters in and out for no reason in each encounter if you want to keep everyone leveled. The enemies are recycled. From start to finish, you'll be fighting recolored slimes and wolves. Summons can heal themselves with their own element spells and are insanely overpowered, making everything trivial.
The animations end up being painfully slow despite feeling snappy at start.

story is stupid because...

The romance between Tidus and Yuna which is front and center is weak and unbelievable. The characters have no passion towards each other. They stand meters apart from each other most of the time, even AFTER the giga cringe kiss scene. It's cold and lifeless as fuck, no nuance. Tidus is like "hmm, too bad :/" about his crush being forcibly wed with the antagonist in front of the whole world. Are you a cuck? In general, all of the main cast characters act like fucking pointless random NPCs with little to no grand purpose.

Relative to its quality Golden Sun is one of the most overrated games ever. A completely average game elevated by having pretty above average graphics for a GBA game and being a Nintendo exclusive RPG during Nintendo's most dire period for RPGs
