Hunger.

I played all far cry games up to 5 recently, and I only experienced this only when when I got lazy and didn't refilled my ammo at that base where you trade the diamonds and had to pick up an enemy weapon from a corpse.
This never happens if you refill your ammo because you can just get a fresh weapon while youre at it.

hm i haven't eaten food for five minutes

game over

I liked DayZ implementation where you had to eat and drink in 5 hour intervals or something

I mean its a default survival game mechanic, I don't know who jumps into a survival game without liking survival game shit

Lol I accidentally fell from a rail bridge after one of the missions and didn't die but just pulled out rebar piece outta my arm and that was that

thats me but with my cock

Weapon degradation can be fine as long as they don't go full-retard over-the-top with it. A gun should be able to fire more than 100 rounds before disintegrating. Same with hunger/thirst mechanics. Why should my character need 10k calories a minute, and chug a small lake every 30 steps?
It's just padding to make everything take longer.

Is it fun though?

Yes, resource management is at the core of the genre

You literally just reload and it takes like 3 seconds. You never played the game. If you did, you’d know that the bullshit outpost respawn is what kills the vibe. I see why they made taking over outposts a mechanic in 3. Because it 2 it was

oh, hey, an outpost

let me sneakily approach it, scout the area, and tactically take out the enemies

Wait what? The fucking respawned the moment I drove 100m away?

Fuck this fucking bullshit!

*proceeds to ignore every outpost and drive through it making it a pure annoyance rather than a meaningful game mechanic*

hold button to steady your aim

regenerating health

Games that do weapon durability well:

Fire Emblem

we want realistic gunplay

No, not like that!

21.png - 400x400, 54.48K

Given that the guns are actually meant to be bootleg jank which is also badly maintained by negros...

How come all the goombas and shit come back when I get a star in Mario 64? That's unsatisfying gameplayloop and badgamedesign. I'm supposed to be taking over bob omb battlefield in a meaningful way.

I wouldn’t mind the respawn mechanic if some actual time had passed. But it feels completely meaningless and absurd when the outpost is magically repaired, all the bodies are removed, and new guys just sit there literally 5 minutes I wiped the whole place clean.

For me its;

Hunger or thirst degradation just kills you via HP loss

Firearm condition lowers stats linearly and then break at 0%

Bad

Hunger depletion gives increasingly severe debuffs below 50%, holds on zero for a while and eventually incapacitates you while giving some buffs above 75% and remaining neutrals between 50%-75%

Firearms have a chance of jamming and breaking below ~15%

Honed or sharpened edge mechanics that give buffs

degradation of all melee weapons go from something like pristine to rusted junk instead of just durability on good or bad base weapons.

weapon durability is tied thematically to how complex or fragile that weapon is with a tradeoff between damage output and durability

Good

wow, you're so intelligent
so next, let's make a ww2 tank game except you have a random chance to break down every 5 minutes because it's realistic

I'm allied with faction X

"oh so that means I can just go past their checkpoints with no issues?"

"lol no, it's an """undercover mission"""" so our guys will also shoot you"

"It's ok though, you can genocide them with no issues whatsoever, it's not like we're fighting a war of attrition in africa of all places"

What the fuck was the point of factions anyways if you don't gain any perks from siding with one?

I imagine some of that might be due to having to fit the game on consoles, not being able to simulate a bit of time passing. But it's better they're always occupied than being *clearable*. You're in a warzone. It's a hostile place. Farcry2 is a game about moving through and learning to thrive in danger, not ending or overcoming it.

it's bad on purpose bro

MALARIA

It's kino on purpose. I still think the game should be played modded if you go to it today, but nothing too much. The game just benefits from a bit of fine tuning. Deconsolisation.

small gun bad, but has loads of ammo

big gun good, but ammo is scarce

simple melee weapon durable, but scales poorly

complex melee weapon requires constant maintenance, but shreds

Kind of the same concept isn't it?

Yeah, I agree with this.
Guns suddenly doing less damage because you haven't cleaned them after a few shots is always retarded.

Overencumberance

I've never liked Health mechanics. I just put on god mode so I can properly explore fights and do shit no one else is "allowed".

Because it should be implemented in a sensible manner and not need you to snack every 5 minutes like you're a diabetic American.

This. Make it so that you either:
Don't have an actual inventory and only gizmo slots for grenades and shit and ammo count for guns
or
Unlimited bottomless inventory Gothic style

I dont hate health mechanics but i do enjoy games where i can just be a god sometimes. Not everything has to be difficulty wank.

increase the games difficulty

all it does is increase enemies health, making them into damage sponges

The best way to increase difficulty is to add things like new moves on enemies

This always rubs my tism the wrong way. In an rpg i just want to hoard to my heart's content.

And also make it more dangerous for both the players and enemies by actually lowering the health of both and just upping the damage. I think that would be pretty fun.

So Stalker difficulty. It just reverses the problem.

Actually getting the food is pretty fun gameplay too in DayZ, and often risky. So the reward is nice.
This is a lot better than doing a 40 minute raid in Tarkov (still only half a day real time) and starving to death because you didn't find a box of crackers or some shit.

humans only need to eat like once a day and drink at most a gallon of water

games make it so you need to eat every 5-10 mins and drink every 3 minutes or you die of thirst

If by kino you mean "shit" then yeah. Great ideas, godawful execution.

I played through Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim as an Orc barbarian, with some rules set for myself. I could only pick up potions I needed to use, gold, and equipment that were a direct improvement of what I already had on me. In other words, a completely different experience from my usual hoarding playthroughs. And It was actually fun as fuck. No need for player housing or storage, just whack shit with a big weapon and move on.

survival mechanics

you have to use the food item and the water item every few minutes

wow this is groundbreaking gameplay i'm so immersed i'm having so much fun it's incredible this is such interesting and deep gameplay i'm cumming

Weapon durability

this was based

the bullshit outpost respawn is what kills the vibe

it breaks up the travel between missions. it's fun to try different weapons and tactics on them. If you don't like them drive up to them in a technical and blast everyone, takes 5 seconds.

*proceeds to ignore every outpost and drive through it

play it on Hardcore or Infamous
lol

Stalker put me off for so long because I thought everything was a shitty bulletsponge. Wasn’t until playing on the highest difficulty that it became one of my favourite games. They should’ve either explained what the difficulties did or gotten rid of the lower ones

Witcher sense and anything like it.

Still not realistic

If you're fat you can literally not eat for months as long as you drink water.
I think the world record for not eating anything is like 360 days straight

The best thing about Farcry 2 was that it was so unpredictable and chaotic. It's the only Farcry game that's like that.

IIRC in Zomboid if you set your game mode time to 24 hours (real time) you really needed to eat and drink in realistic amounts
But overstuffedness buff came down pretty quicly so you could chug on peanut butter and get +10 kilos in one day (good for emaciated perk start)

Press X to Batman Vision was the worst part of the Arkham games

reddit started using the word egregious a few years ago and now every milquetoast basic bitch take involves the word, it's the most egregious thing here

X-ray vision.
sure let's give the player wallhacks and ruin any sense of immersion or accomplishment.

It was also the only one i liked. 1 wasn't very good and from 3 onwards it was just typical ubisoft conveyor belt tier garbage.

stalker difficulty only ever affected the player's health, stop spreading shitty myths nigger

This but Far Cry 3 added binoculars to spot enemies and points of interest and add them to your minimap like in Crysis, but at least in Crysis it was explained as super tech nano suit integrated HUD system, in FC3 ubislop is just lol lmao
Never finished any FC game other than 2 and New Dawn, yeah I know...

this is realistic. reminds me of my turknelli clone shotgun during my last trip to the range

Yes, Angus Barbieri went 382 days and lost 180 lbs over that time. So about half a pound of fat a day.
Survival games should account for bodyfat and let players go days without eating in its hunger system.

absolute sovl

Doesn’t matter because that game is just about headshotting as it’s the only sane way to play it. Do you know why the starting weapons are shit? It’s because you can’t reliably headshot with them. The moment you get an Ak-74, the combat becomes trivial.

He was under medical supervision and on supplements to replace the required nutrients to keep him alive though. If you wander into the woods and try to not eat for a month you usually just die.

my parents watch this show called alone which is basically just a starving contest and they normally last around 2-3 months before the medical team starts evacuating people for getting too skinny. they are like healthy fit in shape outdoors people too normally without a ton of fat to start off with.

if i did that show i would just get fat as fuck beforehand and make a tent and sleep all day every day without even trying to catch fish and hunt and shit and i bet i could outlast all those survivalists

Don't know what point you're making
Do you react this way to every shooter game with an ammo mechanic or whatever

stalker's difficulty increased damage dealt to both the player and the npcs

Sanity meter. Hate that shit.

be given obscene amounts of grenades through looting both enemies and the environment

never use any of them

never use AP ammo either

proceed to complain about the game being unfair

just 85IQ things

that's the shitty myth I just told you to stop spreading
kill yourself

FIEVjZe.png - 1034x552, 43.19K

If you wander into the woods and try to not eat for a month you usually just die

But you certainly don't die if you don't eat for two weeks and have access to water (and aren't skinny already)
Vidya never accounts for this: you have to have three full meals every fucking day

Not any of those faggots you're replying to, but that's really interesting. I always thought Master made everybody die super quickly, but it turns out lower difficulties don't actually make enemies have more health

FC2 suffered a lot by being pushed onto consoles.

This is how Americans think hunger actually works

Sounds kino

if you want to take a look into the rabbithole it's also worth reading this: metacognix.com/stlkrsoc/WhatYouKnowThatAintSo.html
the very quick QRD is that ammunition quality also influences accuracy in SoC and that's why the Makarov has abysmal accuracy, but if you use any mod that disables that feature the Makarov becomes very viable
there's also this to consider

Shots from low-tier weapons like pistols and the sawn-off shotgun available early in the game are limited to a range of 50 meters. Ammo can modify this distance; buckshot lowers the shotgun range to 37.5 meters while slugs and darts increase it to 75 and 125 meters.

some mods remove that as well, playing Clear Sky with the ballistics mod optional module that is part of SRP disgusted me to the point I started over with that mod disabled, it was so bad it made me appreciate the default Clear Sky ballistics - which are nowhere near as bad as faggots claim they are in my opinion, the Makarov in Clear Sky in particular is a disgustingly OP gun with the extended magazines, all of the mods that improve rate of fire and whatever accuracy upgrades you can drop if you follow the ROF upgrade path, even if you just stick to the extended mag and don't upgrade it any further it's a godly gun for tackling the swamps, way better than either flavor of the double barrel, now THAT is a dogshit gun one should never bother with, I personally stash all of the shotgun ammo I come across in the swamps as it weighs a fuckton and is worthless as loot, unlike food and alcohol, you can sell those to the Clear Sky barman for loads of money

ammo mechanics

having to count your shots, make them count

having to go behind cover to reload

this gives timing to fights, a rhythm, like a song

you can't waste bullets, giving tension to every shot

survival mechanics

you have to use the food item every few minutes

you have to use the water item every few minutes

yeah you're right it's the same thing lol what was i thinking this is such engaging meaningful gameplay

also, another thing I find very funny is that in SoC's lower difficulties the enemies effectively have less health lol, see the "player weapon damage" row of that image I posted

weapon jamming as a feature is cool, weapons being made of tissue paper and breaking after 5 minutes is the actual problem

how would you make it engaging but not annoying?

have it be a rare event with an actual cause, like a dip in the water or laying in sand

have guns take a long time to break enough that jams are common, so you're punished for ignoring it but aren't nagged to fix your shit every five minutes.
Would also help to have a repair system that has some depth, rather than click on a repair kit or something.

You cannot side with either of the factions. You're just a merc who does any job he can get his hands on.

For game set in Africa with extreme conditions and shitty second market guns and shitty ammo it's not surprising they'd jam all the time
Besides, if you would've made it too rare of an event then it's pointless because you could just replenish them from INFINITE SUPPLY of guns from your safehouse

it's been a long time, but isn't a big part of FC2 unlocking non-shit guns, rather than using the rusty trash that enemies drop?
I think the ideal scenario is that jamming would gradually get more common as your weapon degrades, but it'll never jam if you keep it above a certain point. So no getting unlucky and your weapon jams at 99% or something(or maybe just have it be astronomical odds)

woah turns out that a precision device being constantly used under shitty conditions requires regular maintenance! wtf!

Skill issue.
Weapon jamming was pretty much a non-problem. It only happened if you tried to use the rusty enemy guns. The ones you bought were shiny and new for a long time. As long as you visited an armory every once in a while to restock your guns would always be good and rarely jammed. And if a jam happened it was never as bad as this to clear.

Be me

American

Haven't eaten a large big Mac with fries and diet cola for 10 minutes

Feel my stomach rumbling

Must be the hunger

Waddle to my mobility scooter

Start driving towards closest Goyslop dispenser which is 30 meters away

Mobility scooter audibly struggling to pull my hunger stricken feeble frame

Shart myself from the hunger

Finally make it after 5 minutes of almost starving to death

Order the entire menu

Twice

Better safe than sorry

Wolf it all down while making inhuman noises

Starving staved off for now

Realize that this is how people under communism must've felt

Fucking democrats

the way 7.62 high calibre and stalker mods handle it
ammo has a jam probability assigned to it, memeshit has a 3% jam probability, actually good ammo has something like 0.05% if not lower
guns have a chance to jam even if on top condition but said jam probability is like 0.015%
the dirtier a gun is the more likely it is to jam but it's not substantial, on the other hand being worn/damaged substantially increases jam probability

the one thing about the system gamma uses I fucking detest is barrel wear affecting damage and not accuracy

I loved how Alimony also tied damage values of guns to calibers, so if you had regular 5.56 gun and switched it to a different one, they'do the same fucking damage but would behave differently just like in real life more or less, we're not talking about barrel length and chamber pressure and terminal ballistics being different
It was really nice knowing that if you had your old obrez with slugs and swapped it for AA-12 you knew it would perform just as you expect it will

It's fine in fear and hunger.
