Part 8 had some really cool fights. He tried to copy part 4 too much he forgot why people liked it. Also, he did nothing with the maid character after the reveal until the very end of the series.

It's been a while since I've read Part 4 so I don't know if it's a retcon or not, but Araki has explicitly stated before that it can't heal illnesses/diseases because they're something a person already has and they aren't considered damaged or "broken". I believe it doesn't work on poison either and can't alter DNA, so he couldn't punch something into a different species while healing it.

So while you could learn to cook better, to cure more complex and high level diseases/disorders you'd have to have access to really high quality ingredients which would cost a ton of money.

Tonio had a spin-off that was literally about trying to cure his lover's cancer with Pearl Jam but it wasn't working because the ingredients he was using weren't good enough. He had to resort to a lot of black market shit and illegally growing some of the ingredients himself until he was finally able to make something that worked.
So yeah, it's useful, but only if you're actually a skilled chef and have regular access to good ingredients. You could probably cure like a headache by whipping up a ham sandwich, but anything more serious than that takes a lot of prep.
