Supposedly Old Frankton ending isn't the 3rd ending and was written to fill in a plot hole, probably because the story is a closed time loop but in the original cut had Alex existing in two places at the same time. So a scenario was added to explain that the room at the end of the game is special and deletes all other copies of you while you're in it.

What are some things you actually like about YIIK?

For me it's the fact that it actually changes seasons. The snow part is comfy.

The funny thing is that by the end I think TehSnakerer hated it a lot more and a lot of his criticism was a lot more cutting.

I like the absurdism and its attempt to tackle philosophical stuff but falls flat to make it interesting for people who know nothing about it or cares to.

I actually enjoy the party cast because a lot of the archetypes and personalities are people I had to interact with or deal with in life. Especially people like Alex

the 1.5 update can be summed up by the devs going "ooooh hoho haha, see the games wasn't ACTUALLY flawed, here's a bombardment of nonsensical pseudo-philosophical bullshit based off our knowledge of metaphysics and scatology that we got from JRPGs and anime, but done IRONICALLY, now you can't criticize the story because everything in it now is intentional. we GOT you now.

It very cynically course corrects itself by undermining the original story/game in an attempt to take the existing material and use the inserts to re-contextualize everything in a framework of which no criticism applies because the story doesn't actually take itself seriously.

Aesthetically it's actually quite nice. I can't think of many indie games that accomplish that level of visuals without resorting to assets or whatever.

YIIK's system is actually much more like Persona where speed determines a priority over who attacks and whoever's next gets to immediately execute what they choose without waiting. In fact, the game in general reminds me of Persona 4 with the modern setting and the Scooby Doo mystery gang bullshit, except Persona 4 had challenging fights where you have to think through your next move carefully, an elemental system with weaknesses and strengths, this persona fusion thing, an option to attack enemies from behind which not only gives you an extra turn on them but also has your team actually physically surround them in the battle, a UI and hud that manages to be beautiful but also incredibly functional, and girls I can shove my penis into.

I've always really liked the music. when people were first shitting on the game even before the funny youtube essays came out people were posting the golden alpaca scene and my main takeaway was

When you play some sort of mystery game, you're already on the lookout for inconsistencies, but with YIIK unless you know ahead of time you're going to fall for at least some of the bullshit.

It's kinda hard NOT TO sometimes tbqdesu. In some ways, I.V magnifies the best and the worst aspects of ACKKers. I can praise the technicolor vomit aesthetic and eclectic character design and the overall cutscene direction with no caveats. Visuals are a genuine strong suit of the team. I enjoyed GUN!Micheal's gimmicks way more than I care to admit.
But the metaphysical philosophy, the not-so-thinly-veiled 4th wall wankery, actually being coherent about things? It's insufferrable, to the point of comedy, and feels like retreating into the abstract to employ the "you just did not get it" defence if needed.
I think Simon K's emails are a microcosm of my complaints. Most of them are very short, fairly rude, and have a sort of bantery feel to them. In one of them he mocks Micheal's film sensibilities by saying "japs fucking love that shit, but we over here see through all that pretentious bullshit". yiik isn't that bad most people that have said it's the worst game ever either were parroting opinions of someone else or don't play enough videogames in general. I understand the distaste and even loathe some elements of YIIK however, overall there are enjoyable moments even with the rocky start the game had.
