I think Doom 2016 is a pretty poor FPS, actually. You don't get much depth there, it's a one-note game, which keeps mixing enemies in slightly different arenas as an attempt to force new approaches, but most of the time it doesn't work and people realize the game's limitation.
Doom Eternal at least tries to build something on that foundation. The thing about having ten thousand different cooldowns doesn't work with the idea of simplicity, but it's not as if this team knew how to make use of simplicity in the first place, just look at Doom 2016... so I think it's more favorable to make an action game that borrows concepts from games like MMORPGs, but at least has some depth, than trying to make something more like a classic FPS and failing.

doom 2016 is a game where you run around shooting demons while cool music plays, the game is very free form, you can use any weapon and they all work fine, ammo is never an issue due to chainsaw mechanics and ammo caches. the plot while there is very soft and focuses on letting doomguy just do more slaughtering

in ETERNAL

enemies are designed around specific weapons, removing your freedom to use what you like with the same effectiveness as before

ammo is an issue due to low starting amount you can hold, chainaw is a single use cooldown and i cannot remember many ammo caches

plot is more focused with cutscenes and shit in a doom game idk why, not to mention the whole "maykr" and angel shit that was just lorefag deep dive stuff is now face first losing some of the classic sci fi edge to the series

It feels too much like an RPG with all the cooldown abilities, resource management, multi-tasking, and weaknesses and the expectation that you're going to get hit a lot. I love and hate this game. The gameplay is so unique and so fun I've beaten it on Nightmare once per year since its release. On the other hand a good chunk of each playthrough is spent actively trying to ignore its cringe story and aesthetic. 2016 managed to get me so on board with the story that I never even wanted to skip cutscenes for it. Meanwhile Eternal had me cringing so hard I felt like skipping cutscenes on my first playthrough. And even past the cutscenes the aesthetic is just raw unfiltered cringe (even with the gritty/cinematic render mode on)

I remember initially being excited about the dash but it ended up being one of the worst things about Eternal. the general fast movement you had in 2016 to evade attacks and projectiles felt so much better and more fluid. Eternal feels jerky as hell.

You can have a favorite gun in Eternal because the game is built around spastic weapon switching, every fight is all the same big cycle. I found playing the campaign for the first time to be more frustrating than fun due to erratic difficulty curve. With that said, once you've got all your tools and upgrades, it becomes a lot better. I do still think Marauders, Arch-viles and those hovering tank assholes are a nuisance and the last too bosses aren't fun. The game's great, it just has a few warts that bother me.

For me it's the ammo shortage, i still do not think there's a single hint of "bad game design" if you can wreck an entire game using a single weapon, that shit's like saying Megaman is badly designed because you can beat the entire game with the regular megabuster.
That alone ruins the game from being this BEEG masterpiece into just an above average first person shooter that feels like you have a lot of shit in your arsenal, but you immediately plateau their power and skill ceiling as soon as you get the weapons, and the low ammo forcing you to waste your time doing fatalities to make the monsters turn into piñatas, on top of having boring boss fights aside from the Marauder, who immediately becomes a regular monster anyways, is just blegh.

Could be better, but it feels like a stepdown from Doom 4 which had a little bit more freedom, though it's funny that going back to 4 after Eternal buttfucked the game's difficulty, quickly switching weapons for combos in Eternal was the nicest thing you can do in that game, but in 4? Shit is beyond busted how you can combo your arsenal from SSG to Railgun to twoshot the entire monster bestiary minus bosses.

So, how often in DE did you find instances of absolutely HAVING to use a specific weapon against a specific enemy? Out of ~25 enemies DE has, how many REQUIRE using one weapon/mod? Not mentioning DLCs.
