Thoughts on old games with PC ports? What do you hope is next?

Personally I'd love to see a DKC trilogy widescreen mod as soon as that happens. Might fix some of the issues with the first game.

Original hardware or bust. Enough with this bullshit. Get a MiSTer or Everdrive and call it a day. You aren't special for playing a retro game in 16:9 or whatever you kids do now.

I hope Paper Mario gets its port next. It's fully decomped, and I'd love to have a nice framerate with text that isn't blurred to shit

Care to explain why?

its amazing but will cause issues down the line if it messes with the product's sales

im hoping for ratchet and clank, crash WoC, crash twinsanity, Sonic battle, Spyro 4, something to fx those games and have programmers learn and replicate the systems for newer games

I like playing N64 at 240p on the computer because that was the original format. N64 games have very low quality textures and very visible low poly models, if baffles me that people want to see that shit in high definition. The blurriness adds to the charm and hides those imperfections. Super high res textures in a low poly game also looks very retarded.

You aren't special for

ooo, I smell projection

he wont because he's here to shill

MiSTer

Kill yourself.

Sonic Battle

Really good choice. Imagine online multiplayer Sonic Battle. Would cream instantly.

There's currently decomp projects for the Advance Trilogy, and Advance 2 has already made it really far, it only seems right that Battle would be next.

im glad to see a cream main. it just needs some extra moves and defense options and im happy

Because at that point it's no longer about the game, you're just tinkering with random crap. Decomps should have just stayed as a proof of concept, now that they're here it's all anyone talks about anymore. "When is Knife Edge gonna get a PC port? What about Chromehounds?" These people don't like games, they like the idea of them being packaged in a convenient form. After Sonic Generations got that executable last year, discussion lasted for all of a few days before everyone just started getting greedy, asking for this and that like vultures. I've seen this as far back as the early days of Saturn emulation. People make demands for stuff they don't really care about. All. The. Time.

yeah it sucks. we have it too good nowadays and it will come crashing down one devs make polices and patents to prevent them from appearing on social media

These people don't like games, they like the idea of them being packaged in a convenient form

These people don't like games, they just like games and want it to be more convenient to play them

Okie dokie smokey

i dont see the downside of decomps though, I just dont interact with autistic people. Although it does suck that all of these cool games are getting “decomped” but no pc ports or anything comes from them.

Retarded complaint, there are many games I wouldn't have experienced otherwise had they not been "conveniently packaged".

There is none. This guy is just angry millennial/boomer. He wants to complain that young people want to experience the games he played as a kid on better hardware. Yelling at clouds.

Because at that point it's no longer about [____], you're just tinkering with random crap.

You just described almost every hobby ever.

Another one I'd love to see is Wario: Master of Disguise. It has the potential to be at least a B or A tier video game if the game had better controls with absolutely no touch screen shit. Put the transformations on a sort of weapon wheel, greatly reduce the dialog, and you now have an extremely underrated Wario game that gets the love that it SHOULD have deserved.

DS recomps would be insane to see regardless.

There's a significant tactile difference that makes these games unplayable when not on original hardware.
If these games weren't free no one would play them period.

Love em but I don't really care about widescreen, just everything else.

They're based because they make autistic brainlets like seethe.
More options is good. Easier access is good. Smoother runtime is good. It's just that simple.

Thoughts on old games with PC ports?

They're neat

What do you hope is next?

PS2 ports, I want the original R&C trilogy

For me, it's Co-op deluxe

Personally I'd love to see a DKC trilogy widescreen mod as soon as that happens. Might fix some of the issues with the first game

Honestly if there's any game those Render96 autists should work on it's the DKC trilogy, unfortunately most people aren't interested in decomping 5th gen games.
Peak millennial opinion, deliberately gimping yourself for that authentic 1990s experience at 30FPS.

Original hardware

MiSTer

LOL

fan ports

it's the same usual suspects (Zelda 64, Mario games)

nobody wants to port stuff like Eternal Sonata or Lost Kingdoms

Kinda boring

d-do it yourself then

I'm retarded and flunked out of IT class

That's a fair criticism, at least with Sonic Unleashed they ported a game that was a pain in the ass to emulate

To be fair, Goemon 64 got recomped.

OP here, I'm currently playing through SM64 Plus (the game I put in the OP) and I'm already noticing some bugs

Bowser trap door has a bugged orange texture when falling through

Bug where the fire texture pops up next to the platform with the three Goombas in the first Bowser level

You just clip through the ground and fall below it when pic related rises in the second Bowser stage (pic related for a screenshot of the bug in action)

Shadows on moving platforms flicker

Invisible walls still not fixed (at least the few I tested)

Shame, I really like the FPS, view distance, performance and widescreen improvements so far.

Advance triology decomp projects

man that sounds nice
lots of screen real estate is a must have for sonic titles.

I think SM64 Plus is one of the more outdated PC ports if I recall. SM64 Coop Deluxe is a nice way to play the game (can play it single player it's not purely coop)

Unc it's 2025

I play the OoT one almost daily, also this.

I see, I'll check that one out and see how well it holds up

The only games that actually fit a low polygon resolution are stuff that's heavily gouraud shaded like Mario 64
If it's textured raise internal resolution, you're kidding yourself otherwise.

Widescreen Advance

this can't not just give me insane sonic flash game vibes even if it's the actual game

If it's easier to do dumb mods like Gore Mario 64 and OoT/MM Randomizer then I welcome them. However, sometimes they do have graphical bugs like Ship of Harkinian having some trouble with textures on Hyrule Field.

Original hardware or bust.

Get a MiSTer or Everdrive and call it a day.

Pretentious retard.

retrofags are worse than audiophiles at this point.
at least audiophiles pay to make their listening experience better.

Ship of Harkinian having some trouble with textures on Hyrule Field.

What troubles are you having? I've never encountered any texture glitches in Hyrule Field. It has that weird audio bug where Ganondorf and Link's voices will disappear if Link is grabbed by a dead hand, a Gibdo, Redead, etc.

Very minor stuff really, just that this particular ground texture (and sometimes Link's shadow) tend to disappear. Never happened to me on N64, GameCube or NSO.

I've been trying Coop DX and it's immediately noticeable that it's tailored for the multiplayer experience, like skipping the lakitu at the beginning of the game was immediately bugged/different, and Mario has kind of server-like lag whenever he moves around. Bob-omb Battlefield was changed around a lot too. Not exactly what I was looking for, but it's definitely good for Coop.

Oh, that. That's actually a result of widescreen so you won't see it on N64, Gamecube, NSO, etc. I'm not sure how they could "fix" that.

Huh, that's really interesting. I didn't know that.

n64mode.png - 1920x1080, 2.02M

Congratulations on your small penis.

Just for the sake of the thread, I'll also note

You can hear sounds from way further out than you're supposed to, like the Whomps walking around or the penguin in CCM

Random white flash in the intro with Peach

Brief moment where you can walk when a text box is at the beginning of the level, or certain cases like Lakitu on the bridge

Entering into a level is way too "instant"

Everything else is fine so far and feels way better than in Plus. I'm just hosting a private game as I don't know any other way to play, so hopefully I'm doing it right.

This. Go to bed zoomies.

unfortunately most people aren't interested in decomping 5th gen games.

I imagine they would be faster to decomp, no?

Outside of exceptions like Sonic, most people are content with emulating, I think a lot of games from the era could benefit from modern hardware like Panorama Cotton and Space Harrier 2.

5th gen titles are at very bad spot when it comes to decomp as most of the games people want decomped were very revolutionary and hard to get working on the hardware at all.
It really doesn't help that 5th gen was when everybody was still trying to figure out 3d, so everyone had their own way and quirks for doing it. 1 decomped 5th gen title could have very little in common with another, while this issue is less pronounced in 6th and later gens, when hardware manufacturers got much better about providing resources to developers.
the N64, much like the ps3 was known for being a bitch and half to program for.
Unsurprisingly, the successors to both of those consoles were released with a wealth resources.

Something that I want decomped next is a Saturn game. Any Saturn game. That might get us closer to having a Panzer Dragoon Saga recomp.

I assume you're talking mostly about games that used the Super FX chip, or games that used Mode 7 graphics?

Also the perfect game to play on a keyboard, hope TTYD gets decomped too, the remake was criminal, and the modding scene for both games would get a massive boost like it did for OoT.

Partially, yes.
The more weird, non standard, obscure and underdocumented, the harder it is to reverse engineer, ie decomp.

phantom hourglass, spirit tracks, solatorobo, prime hunters, DPP, HGSS, BW and BW2 decomps

I'm cooming

Nah, modern source port has camera tied to the second analog stick, 60fps, widescreen, no LOD change etc.
I also don't mind render96 at times, really does look like 1996 bullshots in motion.

I assume this is a good way to play this game for the first time?

hq720.jpg - 686x386, 44.91K

Yes.

prime hunters with mouse control and online vs back again

oh yeah.

What're the hopes that we can decompile 3DS games someday?

Progress on Switch games have already begun so I'd say it's not too farfetched

Uprising PC soon...

I'm really satisfied with the fact I have commits in the games I played as a kid.

Honestly I could see that game getting a proper remaster after Kirby Air Riders is out. Especially with the new mouse controls on the Switch 2. The concept art in that game is beautiful and deserves to be realized in HD.

Original hardware or bust.

Get a MiSTer or Everdrive and call it a day.

At that point you might as well just use a CRT as your monitor for the modern PC ports
