Anon Babbletant here. The new DOOM game's soundtrack is really good, actually. Not sure why people are calling it unmemorable or weak.
B-BUT MICK GORDON!!!
What happened with Mick was unfortunate, but let's be completely honest with ourselves: He was a one-trick pony when it came to composing for DOOM, and a lot of his better work was on the soundtracks for Killer Instinct and Prey. Andrew Hulshult is also pretty mediocre as well, in my opinion.
These new guys are getting a bad rap, probably because everyone hears that they worked on Borderlands 3 and assumes they're random soulless drones. Finishing Move have been in the industry since like 2004, so they aren't new. Since it's a four-man team, this also means they aren't beholden to one specific style. They've done a bunch of genres, from drum 'n bass to post-rock to synthwave and so on. Otherwise forgettable games like Callisto Protocol and Crackdown 3 still had pretty good atmosphere thanks to these guys' music.
I think the problem a lot of people are having with The Dark Ages's music is that a substantial amount of it falls under the drone and dark ambient category, rather than the cyber metal the past two games were known for. Here's the thing, though... Remember Quake and DOOM 64, and how eerie the soundscapes were? That seems to have been the philosophy with TDA. You still get chugging slayer anthems (Into the Void, Blood Spill, Steel Beyond the Grave) but there's also more texture and buildup to those moments.
You can prefer the older games' music just fine, but if you actually listen to the OST for this one on its own, tracks like Infernal Chasm and Apotheosis sound LEAGUES better than what we had before.
