Doom 3 actually has the best sounding and feeling super shotgun, even if it doesn’t have the best range and damage of all the super shotguns. Funny how 2016 eternal and DA couldn’t get the feel right despite modern tech and animations. It always feels so flat in those games.

I also miss the feeling of going out of my way to stockpile ammo for things like the BFG or 100 rockets and just clearing the next two levels exclusively with them by wrecking everything as I see fit. Can’t do that with nuDoom.

Someone should really make a mod that lets you use the flashlight with the pistol and only the pistol. That would keep the balancing largely unchanged, maintain the atmosphere, but would give the player an actual reason to use the pistol.

I just played DOOM 2016 for the first time, finished it in about 48 hours. I gotta say, remember Doom 3: The tone was much better. DOOM 2016 has such a cartoonish, GoW vibe that really throws everything off. The plot reads like Marvel comics. For a gory game, the cartoonish visual style and the comic book plot makes it feel very sanitized. The pseudo-realism of Doom 3, the ayylmaos and the general vibe made it feel much more serious, almost Lovecraftian. I don't know whether they Marvel-ified it because that's what's big right now in pop culture, or whether it's a natural result of sociocultural changes on the whole. Either way, it fucking sucks. It's juvenile. And not "haha damn I'm 10 and playing kablooey mindless shootemup" juvenile. More like coloured toys and superheroes juvenile.

Doom 1 and 2 shit all over 3, always have and always will.

It's always been intended to be a mix of horror and action, which is why the original games didn't feel like Resident Evil. The "Doom Bible" literally calls it "science fiction horror", that's their term.

Me and my box copy I bought of DOOM 3 brand new would beg to differ, zoomie. I remember the graphics and bump-mapping being revolutionary, the volumetric lighting being unmatched, the interactive computer displays and working mirrors being awesome displays of "technology" in games and so on. Having to wait for enemies to attack in dark levels just so you'd know where they are from the dynamic lighting made the game intense and damn scary to play.
You could load up nu-DOOM and hand the controller off to some CoD-playing zoomer and they'd have no issue with it - whereas both the original DOOM and even DOOM 3 were scary to most kids and even some adults (talking from the POV of 1993 and 2004 when they were new and fresh, not "retro").

there's a mod called overthinked doom 3 which is worth trying out. It's not an expansion or anything that ambitious, its just a rebalance mod, but it's one of the few ones that tries to make the game feel more like a survival horror game. You pick up things like heathpacks and use them when you need them. There's way less ammo placed in the maps, and you carry less of it too. The assault rifle for example carries 30 rounds in a magazine, has 3 firing modes, single round, 3 round burst, and full auto, and you can only carry 6 magazines. You switch between magazines when you reload, so if you use most of your ammo in one magazine you'll end up switching back to it until it's completely empty, which you'll end up doing to conserve on ammo.

Walk into a dark room

An Imp takes five minutes to spawn in front of you

Walk up to it and shoot it in the face three times with your shotty to kill it

Get scratched in the back because the game teleported in another one behind u :3 while you were busy

Give it another four point blank shotty hits to kill it

Screen goes red and some dude laughs evilly at you

Pick up a log and listen to some schlub ramble on for a couple minutes before he gives you the passcode you need

Rinse and repeat for 10 hours

I don't hate it but it's the epitome of style over substance. It has killer atmosphere but only one memorable level (Hell)

Doom 3 buckbroke faggots then and is still doing it. It fits the Doom universe better than any other including the originals. Faggots cannot comprehend this and when you say it they all scream at you imagined things like "you just said og dooms are bad kek". Nothing further from the truth but Doomers and Dzoomers are unable to comprehend how good is D3. Doom 3 is Doom, the other entries gravitate around it towards one more extreme directions.
I'm so glad it got the BFG edition because it was ruined in a limited way. Ruining it today with a Remake for example would be way more devastating. Back in the day they fucked up based on the then current limits, the industry wasn't this hellbent on destroying good games.
Doom 3 is such a fucking good and horror experience it's unreal. Not to mention its expansion with pushes it even more towards best Doom.
The character, the weapons, the feeling when using them, the lighting, the monster design, the sound, the pacing, the level design, the audio, the theme song.
