The industry doesn't have the sort of talent required to make a good stealth game anymore so it's better that they don't even try.
stealth genre is dead
arcade racing genre is dead
RTS genre is dead
Genre peaked with Thief, so who cares
Muh new games
Just play fms
I wonder how stealth-focused the upcoming James Bond game by the Hitman devs is going to be.
I'm ok with it. I wish there were more general immersive sims and adventure>action games but as far as knocking out blind deaf dumb gaurds and hiding their unconscious bodies I'm kind of over that formula.
There's a new Styx game coming out.
didn't they genuinely just announce a new Styx game?
it makes me feel like people crying about stealth games don't just download The Dark Mod and make new levels themselves. it's a solved, honestly kind of boring, genre.
the stealth genre is fundamentally flawed and can never be good, because it's all about learning arbitrary constraints of the ai and exploiting that, and if they had actual human tier perception, then stealth games would be impossible.
this assumes that you're limited to playing a human character with no sci-fi tech.
because it's all about learning arbitrary constraints of the ai and exploiting that
what games outside of walking simulators aren't
It's all dead Dave
Thief isn't a stealth game, it's a stealth simulation. There are plenty of stealth games.
have the tech now for fully dynamic lighting/GI, simulated audio and massive levels in a thief game
not a single dev decides to take advantage of this
????
same goes for color,
like casting pearls for swine.
because fully realistic stealth would genuinely be awful. a real human can perceive anything in all lighting conditions safe for complete darkness.
I think the problem is stealth games have limited reach but the genre demands decent visual fidelity. You can't get away with thief 1/2 visuals now. If a developer is going to spend money they'll do it on a genre with more reach, hence Dishonored
What's stopping you? Any retard can start making levels in UE5 with no money and no programming ability.
stop being a sad cunt
Amazing how they never evolved past sound and sight. The enemy ai could use so much more focus that other genres couldn't offer, like enemy teamwork and coordination, panic, changes in behaviors over the level and how much the player is showing his presence, etc... a level shouldn't have you massacre a unit in a room and then the next one everyone is at their normal stations. Even after any detection they shouldn't just search for 2 minutes then forget about it.
It would even be more rewarding since if you wanted to play the final segments of a level with the guards at neutral you would have to be a ghost from start to finish, otherwise they would be more aware and doing aggressive patrols using different kinds of equipment to bring you out
Cause nobody cares
1) I'm working on another game already
2) More importantly, I want to experience the game for myself. If I make the game I don't get that experience. I would know the intricacies of the levels and how the AI works internally and that just sucks the fun out of it.
Unbelievably Excrement 5

All of that happens in modern stealth games, even giga casual ones like AssCreed. You just haven't played any modern stealth games because you're a jaded delusional boomer.
there will never be another dedicated stealth game
Shit ip from shit french team but Styx 3 is coming
Just finished my second run of Lost Among the Forsaken. What an amazing map, easily my favourite undead-centric FM so far. So much zombie variety, the map layout is incredibly well-connected, the idea of using lightshrooms as milestone guide is clever. I dunno where the fuck are the remaining 2000 gold though.
For me it's action-stealth
what exactly is stopping you from making a stealth game?
for me it's puzzle tactics stealth
Make game
When you can just make FM
It doesn't happen at the extent that it could.
Realistically if the AI don't eventually go back to a patrol state then most people would just reload their save after fucking up hard. It's one of those unrealistic elements of the stealth genre that you have to accept.
Maybe limiting saves and making it more like a survival horror game could work (ala Gloomwood) but I'm not convinced it would be fun to play. It would probably just be tedious as fuck.
stealth segments are demoted to mandatory segments in non-stealth games
only semi-immersive sim game is elder scrolls simply due to the engine making the games like that
hack and slash games are bogged down by muh skill trees and muh exp and gear numbers
it feels pretty shit desu
genre peaked with a game that has thieves guild in it
Grim.
More extraction and team based competitive ladder shooters than ever
just make reloading saves not show you this screen after the level is over
Competency
MP in general sucks, at least since 2010
there will never be another dedicated stealth game
There will never be triple A stealth.
But as pure shadow stealth and Thief-likes there are few things in the indie scene like Gloomwood, Filcher & intravenous. And upcoming: Serpens: Eternal Thievery & Noirmancer.
The hit and run tactics are so fun in this game.
New Styx game is the closest thing we get to what a slightly higher budget release looks like. There's also a game called Sleight of Hand. But none of those are really the kind of superior shadow stealth that Thief did.
guards going back to patrol makes sense in a Thief setting. These are not professional security company, they're just dudes hired by some fat lord to walk around their mansions at night, it makes sense that their mindset is to do the bare minimum. In more secure places like Cragsleft or Hammerite church there are alarm systems that put everyone on constant alert.
Sadly overlooked game.
there will never be another dedicated stealth game
Trust the plan. It's coming.
invisible
Yeah no shit
Spoonfeed me. Is this like desperados 3?
the dev of Serpens is tied up working on Gloomwood, won't be out until like 2030 or later at this rate
plus it's a female protag so fuck it
Filcher
Not having any kind of mid-level saving in a Thief-like made for a pretty quick refund
Also wanted to mention, the more FMs I played the more I started to enjoy exploration and storytelling aspects of the game. I used to speedfuck my way through everything and ignore every non-essential readable but these days I go slowly and try to actually understand the environment the designer tried to create. I think the real strength of Thief modding community is how lore-driven it is. Unlike typical mod space like Skyrim where the mods either put John Cena into the game or give everyone huge futa cocks.
pretty good, actually
Unlike typical mod space like Skyrim where the mods either put John Cena into the game or give everyone huge futa cocks.
What a retarded generalisation.
No, it's a turn-based stealth tactics game. Nothing similar really comes to mind.
Is this like desperados 3?
no, it's a roguelite. you go on missions to steal shit from mega corps. the levels are generated. there's cameras, guards, security bots. you get equipment and implants and skills for your guys.
it's meant to be a pretty difficult game. you can lose your guys and fail a run like you'd expect.
regarding the mechanics, you're on a turn timer, and as it goes up, more bad things happen. you will not defeat the bad guys on a map. KOs are temporary, and kills are noisy and expensive, and more bad guys show up. it's a race to complete the objective and loot as much as possible then escaping
you have to weigh hiding/waiting against expediency. it may be better to run past a security camera than to wait 3 turns for a gap in a patrol route
jfc anon. cheesing cloaks + the knockout aug is fun. for me it was shock traps before they nerfed it
Heat Signature is the same but in real time. I've been smoking this game like crack lately.
Skacky’s case aside - It’s sad when you realize that fms creators (so basically hobbyists) have more fun ideas and talent than people working in the industry for a living.
LATF is kino, but I preferred when DrKubiak was going all in these bleak/nihilist atmospheres in his earlier fms.
Rocksbourg 4 doko ? :/
I had the same revelation but with ghosting. Usually when playing Thief I blackjack everything that moves, but when forces to ghost I had to come up with new and risky strategies that completely transformed my experience.
