sorry for ieslb unfinished thought but if we move away from more rigid definition of RPG (skill trees, upgrades, dialogues) like OP suggests i think RPG require being able to immerse yourself as a character in the world. For example I could call something likeTruck Simulators as RPG where you can like drive trucks and listen to radio and shit, meanwhile something like Tekken isn't RPG because when fight as Jin Kazama, he is an more of an abstraction for things like distance and inputs and time data with stuff like design and animations and voice slapped on him for human comprehension

No you're not. There's a difference between merely controlling the character and playing as them. When you're playing as them they got things like stats and you making choices in the game at the very least. You're never "roleplaying" as Mario in a game where you're just making him jump around.
