XIII's party was fine, people only remember the early game but characters like Lightning and Hope get their development and come out the other side being fine. Fang is sorta assassinated in the last 5 minutes of the game but other than that they're overall at least more memorable than the parties of half the rest of the franchise.

Only good character in XIII and also the only one that in a story of gods creating worlds, realities, enthralling people, and destroying cities, he felt like the only one swept up in a story bigger than himself.

The one thing that made me sad about this was that Sazh's voice actor wasn't the one to blow up after the game came out. I tried Remake and Rebirth and honestly I can't stand them. XII is my favorite FF, I liked XIII and XV, and XVI disappointed me, but I gave it another chance with the DLCs and liked them both. FFXVII (Expedition 33) is the best of the bunch. I still like the franchise and will check out the new one if it ever releases. I don't think the games drastically changing from title to title is a bad thing. It's just waiting nearly a decade between releases.

In contrast, Lightning is patently unlikeable. She's just a cunt for the entire game. Snow is unlikeable, he's retarded (negatively) for the entire game. Hope is unlikeable, he's a whiny cunt for the entire game. Vanille is unlikeable, she's just ditzy in the worst possible way. Fang is almost likeable, but it's hard to tell whether or not that's just because the rest of the cast sucks or because she's inoffensive.

Rebirth is grating on me, but Remake is one of my favorite games of all time. I actually enjoyed XII a lot too, I just recognize that it hits a very slow point midgame that some narrative and level design tweaks might have helped, pacing-wise. Even XIII is guilty of it a bit, but the urgency of the story helps.
