Playing 2016 for the first time and honestly after the originals it feels like something is missing. You've got a pistol with infinite ammo, press F to awesome attacks where you teleport right to the enemy (it's funny how you can go up ledges etc with this though) and none of your weapons and the enemies' attacks feel like they're doing any damage besides the visual reflection of your HP number going down. It just feels extremely unsatisfying to play.
Are Eternal and Dark Ages the same or should I quit nu-Doom while I'm still ahead?

Discourse surrounding the nu-Doom franchise in general is sort of why I hate it when devs find a formula that works, but decide constantly break the wheel and then build an entirely new one every time they make a new entry in a franchise. You’re going to fracture your fanbase into tiny little pieces that are constantly in-fighting, rather than talking about the game itself.

Resident Evil’s basically the same way, just stretched out a bit more. I came in the very early days of the franchise, so I like slower paced, resource management, puzzle solving, zombies, Umbrella, etc. Then, RE4 flipped the table and turned everything into shooter corridors with “monsters of the week”, which turned off a lot of classic fans, myself included, which then led to nonstop in-fighting between them and the new fanbase that 4 and its successors brought in. Then, RE7 and the RE2 remake flipped the table again, so you’ve got even more splinter groups entering the chat. Now, the fanbase is so fractured, that each faction now holds out hope that the next entry will get back to “their” Resident Evil, so no matter what Capcom does, they’re going to piss someone off.

I’m about halfway through right now, and I’ve spent the vast majority of that with the super shotty, with shield and melee doing most of the heavy lifting.

2016 retrofitted quake things into doom (which i think is good) such as the infinite pistol from Quake2 and the Quad damage from Quake1.
The first few weapons in 2016 feel the worst, don't worry, everything else feels better.
I agree actually that there's not enough audiovisual feedback when you get hit, it's an odd design choice.

You can run specific modes that allows high continuous damage without swapping too much such as rocket on the rifle, auto shotgun, lock on rocket, shield chain gun, overheat plasma. Those weapons have great continuous dps if you prefer that kind of playstyle. It won't be top top optimal or w/e but it will be good enough to beat the game at any difficult

I think 2016 has great level.design and aesthetic. Early half of 2016.offers a unique feel due to more limited arsenal and even the low/mid level demons were threaten. The problem that leads to 2016's difficulty scaling is how insane the upgrades are. The upgrades are just too powerful and throw you into overpowered territory and the game is suddenly easier.
2016 feels dated if you play eternal then 2016 but if you play 2016>eternal, the game still feels like a great game
