here's your superior gaming display bro
Here's your superior gaming display bro
That's not an OLED
Soul...
Im cumming from the soul
For low resolution stuff it is quite better
Will CRTs basically work forever?
For me, it's Software rendering with a Lottes CRT shader (no screen warp)
Nope, the tubes get darker as you use em.
But unless you watch TV 24/7, they will most likely outlast you.
Given the demand for CRTs by retro enthusiasts (and Melee players) why the fuck hasn't a new company cropped up that makes modern CRTs?
Is crt obsession related to some mental illness? Is it just nostalgia? Zoomers sad about missing out on some old crap?
I used lg crt for half of my life and have nothing good to say about it except that it's durable
Thanks.
There's a whole lot of other things that can/will fail in a CRT. But there's enough autism out there that you can often find ways to fix em, even if it's a hassle.
zoomers when the old graphics are old graphics and not ugly fake retro "PS1 styled" graphics.
why aren't people clamouring over high resolution pc crt monitors?
As someone who plays a ton of rhythm games (especially key-sounded ones like IIDX), I wish I had a high quality, decent sized CRT to play my games on. Input latency is a fucking bitch.
They are.
Input latency
Oh mental illness then? Thanks for the input
It's hard to get a good pic of a CRT screen without controlling a half dozen variables. You usually just get a blown out image with artifacting like in these two pics.
In my case, i'm too poor for OLED and the kind of LCD i can afford have a horrible motion clarity, so getting a cheap ass tv on a thrift store gives me something good enough to play old games on.
If you seriously don't understand the problem with input latency when it comes to rhythm games then you are a complete fucking retard.
Incredibly difficult to produce.
I need to find me an old CRT TV for my Raspberry Pi 4b Batocera / old movies build.
Thanks for reminding me OP.
Retro enthusiasts just aren't a big enough market to get manufacture back up and running.
Obsession is stupid, shaders do a decent enough job if you don't have one lying around already . (don't really see myself not replacing mine if it dies early though lol)
That said, I distinctly remembered really liking how the FF7 backgrounds looked and after going back to FF7 a few years later on LCDs I just knew they didn't look that shit. With the passing of the years I almost just took it for a given but then CRT Royale reminded me I didn't imagine there being beauty in those.
FF7 is just an example, but I also remembered in the early days SD media in general just looking like ass on LCD compared to CRT. I understand coping oneself along but except for very specific cases SD is just better on CRT.
There's no physical way you can tell latencies apart. We are talking about 0.5 sec differences here.
The PGreat window in IIDX is one frame. At 60FPS (120 if you're playing Infinitas/Data) that means you have roughtly a 16 millisecnd window to hit the PGreat window.
You are a retard.
Nah after years of gaming it is noticeable. Battletoads was alright on a crt, you needed many frame perfect inputs but it was fine. But playing Battletoads on a regular tv or monitor nowadays is hell lol.
Because not as many people want CRTs. It's like Windows 9x, people say how good it is, then it shits the fan when people try it. People just want look and feel like copies like pic related.
Dude even for old ips 1ms is insanely common. You don't really NEED CRT.
Most people have learned that CRTs are high in demand. Youre not saving any money now looking for a CRT.
Pixelated Fuuka, my beloved.
Depends on where you are, even in Germany I still see CRTs randomly on offer now and then.
Never even heard of magnavox.
I did paid 80 BRL for mine.
I imagine his problem is using a television.
Modern tvs have painful input lag, specially with composite video where it applies the "deinterlacer filter" that add a shitton of lag for no good reason whatsoever.
This is what those retrotinks and shit are made for.
how about using pixel art was designed w/scanlines in mind
just set shutter speed to 1/60
i got mine for free on facebook marketplace
Most people have learned that CRTs are high in demand
That's great when is a rich person in china getting one of the old tv factory's going and make new crt tv's.
Based
Thanks bro
right looks better
Fellow Doom3 enjoyer detected.
adding japanese porn censoring to the whole screen makes it look better!
They could make garbage bin small crts. The high quality stuff's gone for good.
PS2 games should be played on flat screen LCD TVs with component cables. And it’s always Persona 3 and 4 that these zoomers post fake nostalgia CRT pics of. I’m tired of seeing pictures of Persona 4 (a game that came out after the PS3 btw) looking like a blurry Vaseline-smeared mess with all these comments like “Oh, so cool!! So retro!” Those games look like shit on a CRT. I’m not just saying that because of the pictures. I’ve played them on a CRT myself. You’re doing the visuals a huge disservice playing it that way.
If you have a decent enough CRT (very hard to find. They’re terrible, and very old now.) then PS1 games and backwards are arguably better. PS1 games have that dithering effect where they rely on the display’s natural smudginess to create transparency and color gradients out of blocky grids.
You should have picked P4 to fit the narrative OP.
based
Not at all. Most CRTs on sale right now suffer from one defect or another.
Rights a little too bright but ill still rather that
Notice how on the right you can see her red heels but on the left you can hardly see one of em and the other is invisible
Persona 3 and 4 are 480i games, something LCDs absolutely shit themselves trying to de-interlace properly. Not that it matters in Persona in particular, but early LCDs used to add a fuckton of input lag processing it.
thats not Sony GDM-FW900 recapped and DOS color-calibrated
If your LCD is old enough to have component input then it will invariably have shit image quality.
if you have an LCD then it will invariably have shit image quality.
you have to inject a shitload of estrogen before you can understand CRT shizos
and lcds that use faster lag free method have lots of saw combing. deinterlacing really sucks
why dont they just make big flat 65 inch 4K CRTs these days
Well it's either saw combing of bob deinterelacing or the flicker of a CRT. There's really no winning with interlaced video and fuck the PS2 and Gamecube for leaning so hard into it. Especially the PS2.
playing post 5th generation games on a CRT
Peak retardation. The games weren't made with the CRT in mind by that point.
problem?
They're too rare and expensive and even if you did get one with good life and brightness on it, it's not going to do anything much better than an OLED monitor.
The demand you speak of is not nearly enough to make it economically viable. And the expertise, know-how, experience, supply chain and factories are nearly gone, making it even worse. If you took the current niche demand for them and transplanted it back to when they were still being made, mayyyyybe someone would've bothered continuing making them.
I know you're memeing but if not, left won't actually look like left in person unless your face is 1 ft from the screen.
The bigger the CRT tube, the thicker the glass needs to be. the weight scales exponentially pretty much.
This 43 inch tv (the biggest TV ever made) weights 400LB/180KG.
And the expertise, know-how, experience, supply chain and factories are nearly gone, making it even worse
yeah dude it's lost knowledge from 2000 BC
retard nigger
curvature is bloat and what's with that chromatic aberration
thanks for reminding me that I should replay P3FES with the party control patch applied on my CRT
Magnavox
Wow talk about sovl and American made tv
They are made for CRTs, but as they have 3D graphics, they look better on higher resolutions.
I honestly have been it playing vanilla and it's more than doable
I really don't understand the alleged problem people have with normal tactics?
My friend got one of those small Sony production monitors and hooked up Majora's mask to it swearing it was gonna blow my tits off and when he turned it on the silence was deafening. You crt fags need to get a grip only those half projector half LCD 720i Sonys look great everything else looks like shit
I still had mine until last year and it burnt out. Space is limited right now so I haven't looked too much into replacing it.
it's just not very fun watching the bulk of every combat encounter. Beat the game vanilla on release just fine, but I prefer to have more control as it's more enjoyable that way to me.
Photo
of a CRT
"look how inferior it is, you can see all the problems just in this photo alone
I'm not explaining why you're so fucking stupid to point this out, I'm just going to let it red flag you as the zoomer you are. Whatever you do don't record a video of a helicopter taking off because you might come up with some flat earth tier argument for how helicopters fly based on the footage.
This 43 inch tv (the biggest TV ever made)
Really they never went above 43 inches? That actually surprises me. Even with it being 400 pounds you're telling me rich snobs who wanted the biggest TV couldn't go above 43 inches. Funny to think
For the record, yes CRT TVs were before my time
CRTs are pointless. Just get a retrotink.
3D, 20 FPS game
You might as well use a PS3 on it.
he says while playing with achievements on
The irony is almost searing
A retrotink 4k is 750€. Do you have any idea how many Sony PVMs you can get for that money which will offer an equivalent experience? Three.
that literally has no impact on gameplay
There's reasons why LCDs took over.
Mostly related at most people just consuming 24 FPS content on it, and the price per inch being a fraction of the cost of the CRT.
Neither does your shitty CRT filter (which PS2 games weren't even made for mind you), so why do you use it?
PS2s weren't made to be played on a CRT
huh?
I've got 4 CRT monitors in my collection so far, but one needs a recap or something. Between an IBM Aptiva 2124, Dell E773C, and HP Pavilion MX70, which one will have the best colors, contrast, and black level? Is it worth fixing up an HP v75?
another off-topic reply
do you need someone to define "gameplay" for you? or maybe English lessons altogether
the crt filter simulates 240p feed. ps2 games generally are 480i
oh I see, yeah that makes sense.
Games just look better on small blurry 4:3 screens
No one has figured out what to put into the sides gained with widescreen except 2D platformers
extra vision in FPSes is also pretty nice.
holy aliasing batman
Id rather play Dark Cloud or FFX on the bottom tv desu
yee
I want to see less of the game
but why?
Will you?
a couple years prior to there being 100000 videos made about CRTs on youtube, there was a guy on blurbusters who was offering to manufacture up to 600hz CRTs but only if there was enough support that could be hyped up. obviously, this was before every faggot retrogamer youtuber made videos about them so there wasn't any resurgence yet and he disappeared shortly after
one needs a recap or something
Most CRTs do. "CRTs work forever" is a fucking ridiculous statement considering how hot they get, how much their caps bleed and how much their tubes degrade.
at that point us rich snobs bought rear projection screens
Thanks for throwing out my TV mom, despite me saying I needed it for my older systems. Good luck explaining to older people that old systems make for a hideous picture on modern TVs. I got an hdmi adaptor for the ps2 but it's just not the same.
I literally grew up with CRTs? why are you retards so eager to become authorities on what people can or can't do, completely mental
more = gudder
Okay here you go anon enjoy
That's just a 16:9 image stretched. Give me more rendered.
ok
I think most of this fame come from the absolutely fucking suicidal LCD televisions from 2004-2012 or so.
Shit capacitors, lead-free solder, CFL lamps...
I found a TV that i shit you not, has "Su'scon" capacitors.
But replacing em did nothing because the tv chipset died the same way Xbox 360's do.
CRT tvs mostly stopped being manufactured before this bullshit
not a 720 degree view
thanks but try again
how do you connect new stuff to old TVs?, I only know those shitty hdmi to AV chinese converters that output 720p
he doesn't know about FOV
You can't see scanlines on smaller TVs.
It's just my personal observation on internet marketplaces.
crt takes less space looool
OLED monitors are now a thing and as long as you get top end you can apply BFI for very similar results without the issues of old hardware.
I just use the crt shaders in retro arch
I have one of the cheap shit and it does output at many resolutions.
The only problem it has (and it's a big one) is that it does not do 240p
It does accept the retroarch 3850x240 resolution and displays it, but it fucking linedouble the picture.
Ideally you have to find one that can support what they call "Super resolution" or "CRT emudriver".
Honestly to me the best thing about CRT isn't contrast or resolution or whatever, but the low-persistence. Never seen a any other display than CRT not work with the ufotest persistence of vision thing. Are there any OLED/QLED/whateverfuckyouLED monitors that have that same low persistence display?
I use a Delock 87685 to connect my PC to VGA CRT monitors.
The "CRT" in that image is a filter, though it'd look even better on a real CRT
Oops, wrong 720, i meant this for you:
I had an OLED phone that came pretty close.
wanted to play Deltarune on my old CRT TV
it decided to crap out on me right now
those shitty hdmi to AV chinese converters that output 720p
hey, consider yourself lucky. I also have one of those shitty HDMI to AV converters except it outputs nothing, just doesnt work at all lol
My LG OLED C2 with OLED motion (BFI) gets very close to a CRT. I hear the CX/C1's OLED Motion Pro is even better but I can't test that myself.
How much did that cost? Is this sort of thing within the realm of what a layman might call "affordable" yet?
thanks bro but i already got one
My condolences. What happened?
Magnavox odyssey?
i.e. the first game console ever made?
is that a 240p screen
I'll give you $500 for that
I paid 1600€ for my 65" C2 2 years ago. Not sure how prices have developed but considering the state of the world I'd imagine they cost about the same now.
rich snobs just built a home theater with a projector and bought reels
too bad B&O tubes are horrid slop, they look really nice and the motorized stand is a cool concept
goofy ass setup
That's the thing - I don't know. Picture quality became worse, and it gets no picture when connected to PC. The problem is that I can't check whether something is wrong with converter or TV itself, because I have nothing else to plug into my TV (I have old DVD player that doesn't works at all), but at very least I can see that OS recognizes converter as another display, so it must be working.
This is why Super Mario RPG Remake was one of the few remakes acceptable in my book - the original looks horrible on digital displays, and even filters only do so much. This is also a big reason I would've wanted a proper remake of FF7.
Going to probably pick a small 12 to 14 inch CRT for summer cottage usage in a few weeks. Was just looking at what's available a few hours ago. Looks like it's pretty hard getting a smaller model these days with a SCART or even composite. RF could be pretty cute but I don't even have a cable for it for one of the consoles I'm going to take with me.
This one looks really nice, although it's a bit bigger than what I'm looking for. Seeing as it seems to be in such a good condition, it might be a bit of a shame to lug it around. Might get some blemishes in transit.
idk i think the picture quality of the tube in person is pretty nice on mine, although geometry is out of whack no matter what i do.
found it locally for 50 bucks, and the matching speakers for about double that. its a bit overkill but i thought it looked real cool in the marketing material from back in the day so i thought fuck it, why not
This TV looks like it can nuke me some lasagna.
Yes, it is. Dilate, hon.
Yeah. I love it that it has almost an identical design to the early "digital" microwave ovens.
a system with a library dominated by 480i output
a video signal (component) that Sony rushed the implementation of, leading to a buggy output over 480i that most digital displays absolutely shit the bed trying to decode (see pic related)
Wow never fucking give tips again for retro gaming, holy shit.
do you play video games on a fucking microwave
I would kill you and whoever lives with you for that TV. And the guy who called it goofy
They didn't even work long to begin with unless it's an old black and white one most were just mass produced trash and expensive as shit to get repaired hated these heavy shitboxes
You don't?
Hmm, if it's not quite clear I would try getting something somehow you can more normally test it with. Picture quality getting worse was a gradual long-term problem or did it only show up very recently? I'd like to hope it's just the converter, or even something more physical would be easier to diagnose but if the TV's electronics themselves somehow got fucked that might be it.
But I'm not much more than a layman on this either. I hope it's still salvageable, though nothing lasts forever in this world.
is 4k OLED pretty much needed to make those look good? they always look dim on my 1080p tv
PS2's inability to output progressive scan after the Dreamcast is almost inexcusable but I atleast give them props for supporting so many strange solutions like D-terminal or 480p over SCART.
i too am an avid fan of blurry graphics that looks like the screen has been smeared with vaseline
OLEDs are generally speaking dimmer than LCDs but I haven't heard of people having much issue with newer OLEDs being too dim when doing scanlines/BFI. Then again, this is up to personal preference.
You realize the "nostalgia display" is most older tvs already breaking down, right? Like back in the day we didn't have the scan lines there all the time the damn things broken and some boomer is probably laughing his ass off he managed to sell it to some stupid kid for $200 because "it has soul"
It helps but I was honestly pretty satisfied for the time I used those on 1080p.
There are a bunch of ways to do it, this guy made an antire series of videos going trough the pros and cons of each method
youtube.com
scanline-based displays didn't have scanlines back then
Like back in the day we didn't have the scan lines there all the time
Yes you did. The usual zogslop TV broadcasts were just 480i/576i which makes the scanlines less visible, but much like with pixels it's simply a matter of amount and distance.
no.
some older games were made with CRT's in mind and it isnt a meme that SOME games look a lot better on a good crt.
but most people just use shaders to recreate them and dont spend $500+ on old decomposing tv's.
i only realised this after the fact but i might like 480i more than 240p
why would i buy a crt when i can get the same blur with dlss
CRTs have unparalleled motion clarity. DLSS shits up motion clarity. Now add to that a dogshit TN panel which DLSS using nvidiot poorfags have and you have the absolute antithesis of a CRT.
well, did you win the trial?
Shaders are cope. Even the best ones on 4k OLED are still cope. They do not look as good as the real deal. And CRTs can still be gotten for free or cheap pretty easily on marketplace, even really good ones as long as you don't live in the middle of nowhere. It's PVMs that have gotten crazy but they're overrated as fuck anyways and most have immense hours on them, negating the benefit of getting one in the first place which was supposed to be that they last longer than consumer sets.
gaussian blur filter on oled solves this problem
sovl
Love the P4 intro.
dont care, not having a huge bulky CRT that is 20+ years old taking up a fuckload of space in my home just to play old video games better.
shaders are free, convenient and look "good enough" with configuring and thats cool with me.
Yes, I am waiting for enhanced PC ports of retro games.
No, I will not support emulation anymore.
No, I definitely will not buy a CRT.
Yes, I will be playing retro games at 60fps, widescreen (not stretched) on my OLED TV.
No, you don't personally understand what the artists original intentions and vision were, despite owning a CRT and original hardware.
No, there is nothing wrong with any of these options, but CRT tards are usually the most elitist and obnoxious.
CRTfags are such cuck friendzoners
Turns out I am an idiot. I decided to bite the bullet and pull out this monstrosity out of the storage, since this slut pretty much takes anything from SCART to HDMI, and the signal from antenna looks shitty on it as well, and it doesn't sees input from converter either, so I guess it's converter that is at fault.
Fair enough
You're at the mercy of the corporations deciding what you can or cannot play.
However if you have an OLED TV, by my personal experience with both, i would say it's "close enough" to not matter that much.
i didn't mean to sound a dick anon, i just get tired of CRT faggotry whenever you talk about old games.
I've configured my shit to my preference and it took me ages to do and I hear people constantly talking about configuring real life CRT's for "absolute" best graphix.
at some point you have to stfu and just play the game lol.
you wouldn't get it
wavy edges that look like a piece of paper that got wet
Yeah why did some CRT sets do that?
composite
You blew it.
Perfect for watching porn
Just say you are too weak to pick them up. all the excuses seem sad
You're at the mercy of the corporations deciding what you can or cannot play.
I'm talking about PC ports made by fans by reverse engineering roms, like what they did with Majora's Mask and San Francisco Rush
There's a vacuum in the tube that requires a thick glass to not implode onto itself. By making the glass curved you can use less glass (about 30% less) without losing structural integrity. Later, flat CRTs used more glass and thus had more weight and cost.
40" 4:3 is about equal to a 70" LCD in terms of height. The 4:3 frame means it's much taller.
1ms
Response time ≠ Input lag
Dumdum
Get a proper CRT
CRT was part of Pop culture of 1950-2010. See why zoomers apply the SMPTE color bars, the ping sound and Snow static to digital video in youtube
Never played personer not too into rpgs but it's a great looking game on ps2.
Thats not Sonys prototype RGB tandem led.
perhaps you should stop going into discussions about CRTs and demanding everyone else shut up if you don't like the discussion being had
Don't forget the *insert and start VHS* sound.
I love mine personally
Don't forget the *insert and start VHS* sound.
an instant indicator that the video you are watching is probably shit and poorly researched
lets compare a crt with a $60 dell lcd from 2005 designed to be used for minimum wage office workers
wtf crts win...........
The strangest mark against CRTs that I've seen people try to push is that they're too heavy. Even if it was true (it's not) how often are you moving them around?
I have a total of 3 in my house right now and between all of them I paid a total of $40
You do realize zoomie, that you can't get an accurate idea of what a CRT image looks like by photographing it - right? They always look fucked when recorded/photographed.
Easy way to tell us you're under 20.
oldfag on the internet yelling at someone he thinks is underage
and what does that make you exactly
Some people move a shitload I guess. It can definitely become a real problem with 32 inch or above I think. Pretty much requires two people to move and even then it's a bitch, especially with stairs or long distance.
Nokia made pretty good monitors. Shouldn't have thrown mine away back in the day just because a connection had gotten loose somewhere in it and I couldn't get a picture anymore.
comfy kino
I got one of these for my setup and damn it's a bitch to get working correctly. Once I got it figured out though, it's pretty nice. I mostly use it for watching anime in 480i, but the 240p for occasional games is cool too.
That needs a cap change and tuning
6th Gen is also better on component/RGB
No, the guns will lose power after a while
But you should enjoy them while you can
just press the kino degauss button
They're all 3D games so no need for CRT or anything.
Just shove em in your OLED at 120hz or something.
