They couldn't because the fantasy turned them into worst versions of themselves. It turned Doned into a schemer, a backstabber, a traitor to his own brother, it turned Mewt into a toddler mental state wise, a crybaby, someone who despite holding the power, needs others to do his biding instead of taking matters into his own hands. And to a lesser extent, it turned Ritz, someone who lend a helping hand to those who needed and stood for what was right, into the opposite, as she would not help Marche and fought only for herself and her joy. This effect didn't affected Marche, for he did not indulged in the fantasy, instead he wanted to escape it.
And that's the real lesson, indulging in fantasies stunts your growth as a person, with Mewt being the most affected, while Marche, the one trying to escape it, certainly grew the most. Something even Ritz comes to admit in a conversation.
The whole point is that you will have to face the harsh reality sooner or later and if you hide from it now you will only become weaker and less capable of dealing with it later, so when you do eventually have to deal with it it will be much harder. The thing that defines escapism is the fact that you don't actually escape the shitty situation you're in and instead delude yourself into believing that you have escaped it.

Here's the problem with tackling the issue of "escapism" in fictional stories. The "escapism" in their reality is real. The world they "escape" to isn't some kind of comatose dream. There's legit another world where you can travel to and not only excel at with your skills and intellect, but you can meet people who actually give a damn about you and share memories with them. You can even explore interesting places and find interesting things that don't exist in the previous world you were born in. So tell me, why is it a bad thing to go to stay at that world and live a happier life?

If we are speaking about FFTA, then the problem is that the kids were using escapism to escape their problems (Ritz's domestic issue, Newt mourning his mom, Doned sickness). However, their problem is still with them, them simply choosing to ignore it, let it bubble up inside them and turning them into worse people. Deep down Newt knew that his mom is dead and the queen is simply a replacement with non of the warm of his real mom, Ritz is still insecure about her hair color and still haven't reconcile with her mom, and Doned still haven't learn to care about other beside himself. They weren't escaping their problems, they were using the fantasy to forget about their problems to an unhealthy level.

Marche life wasn't perfect, he outright spell it out for Doned. Their mom focus completely in Doned, their parents divorce because of Doned, they moved to a new, unfamiliar land because of Doned. In his family, everything is revolve around his sick brother. Marche understood why but because he was still a kid, deep down he resent that arrangement. In a meta sense, the Grimore gave Marche the thing he wanted, being the main character of something in his life. Still in the end, Marche refused to take it because he cared more about his friends than what he want.
