2 will always be superior because it's standalone. 1 and 3 are fucking fantastic, and pushed their consoles to the boundaries in terms of graphical fidelity, with incredible cutscene direction and atmosphere, but you just can't beat the story that 2 tells. It is far more relatable than any of the Alissa cult stuff and it's one of the rare few games with a believable and relatable morally ambiguous protagonist. Silent Hill 2 is a beautiful work of art that exposes the deepest parts of human psychology.

Whether you like SH3 or not depends on whether or not you like Resident Evil games.

What I like most about SH2's story is its commentary on how people grieve including all the complex emotions involved with it. James grieved so much before Mary had even died that he eventually got over it and became tired of her the same way many elderly or terminal people are treated. It is a very sensitive and delicate theme and I admire SH2 for touching on it and for Mary's actress for portraying it. The last hour of the game is absolutely fucking brutal for me.

Silent Hill 1 is the scariest. Silent Hill 3 is the overall best, though it is unfortunate they had to cut some corners which hurt it in some areas. Primarily feels there's 15% of the game missing between act 2 and act 3.

The history goes that Silent Hill 2's very poor sales led to SH3 and SH4's budgets being cut, this is directly from the devs not hearsay. Silent Hill 3 was retooled from an arcade game to a regular game with a tight 9 months dev cycle. While Silent Hill 4 continued with a low staff until they went into full production.

Konami was trying to close the gap with Capcom's horror games, hence the insanity of developing 2 Silent Hill games back to back. They retooled SH3 to be more in line with Silent Hill 1, while they made an experimental SH4 (which was probably inspired by Fatal Frame's popularity). Konami wanted to have a big Resident Evil IP under their roof and was burning money to get there.

I hate Silent Hill 2 with a passion. Put me to sleep, which is rare for a game to do but here we are. There isn't much of a debate, Silent Hill 2 is a walking simulator and Silent Hill 3 is a horror video game. Heather Mason is the best Silent Hill protagonist, with Harry runner up because of the undertone of this average Joe being in a hellscape and just asks where his daughter is while not asking about the Eldritch abominations he faces.

There's like 1-2 good scares in the game (Pyramid Head can free roam in the maze without any boss music popping up), but so much of it is genuinely boring to play. I totally agree and the subway is the area that made SH3 feel very unique to me. It is much more stressful game to play than 1 and 2.

I like 3 better for a few reasons

better weapons and combat feel, especially melee

enemies are more threatening and dangerous to fight

stricter resource management that is proper for a survival horror game

tons of costumes and other cool unlockables like the lightsaber

more likable and relatable protagonist

The pessimistic would say "Well if it isn't in Silent Hill the town, it CAN'T be good!", but somehow the out of town areas were very memorable. I don't know what the word is for making the ordinary day-to-day places seem a lot scarier and it isn't about hospitals or whatever. It's like the mall you're in at the start of the game isn't from Doom (at least the start), something uneasy about a totally normal place that's abandoned and you're thinking to yourself what a mall would look like after hours.

I get SH3 has very stark Otherworld areas (super gory), but for me the scariest parts were the normal areas that were absent of people. The occasional monster noise and ambient noise did a lot on your nerves, particularly the subway. It's so weird that it works, you think Silent Hill and you think of the foggy town and here's SH3 with it's mall and subway making you uneasy without the fog.

I think the first half of SH3 taps into the same effect that Resident Evil 7 does, if you have ever played that game. It takes extremely dry, very mundane environments and makes them intensely emotive through hyper-realistic design/graphics/layouts, music, lighting etc. It is a very unique feeling almost similar to nostalgia but much more unnerving and dreamlike.

The nurse and the female cop from SH1 were going to be in SH3 before getting cut by time constraints. Honestly would've been wholesome to see them pop in the ending, like strangers meeting and Cheryl recognizes them from a different life and cries a bit. You know something about the SH1's nurse never made any sense to me. She had some extra backstory in some novel or whatever, but in-game wise we never really learned how she actually died. Just that she was re-purposed by the town magic and Alessa's memories bringing her back with amnesia. That's all well and good, but besides the implied drug overdose we never got a definitive backstory.

It is really funny how she's having a meltdown in real time and Harry's face is like "fucking gross" and walks out.

That is disappointing. It would have been really interesting for Lisa to appear as an apparition in Brookhaven and to see what her interactions with Heather would be like. Because at that point in the game Heather is encountering all these predatory men like Vincent, the happy birthday guy, and Leonard. A calming female figure like Lisa appearing and helping Heather but slowly unwinding like she did in SH1 would have been really cool.

As for Cybil, I don't mind that they left it open-ended. I like to imagine that she managed to escape the insanity of Silent Hill and the cult after helping Harry out of there and went on to live a peaceful life. But she's probably dead in canon considering Harry had to turn to drink to deal with his trauma after SH1 and Cybil didn't seem like the type of person to leave Harry behind considering their shared experience in that town.

SH1 itself did it with Kaufmann's quest, though in all fairness that quest's impact on the ending does put it in a different class of relevance.
