Music wise I generally prefer SSC. Harmony does have a few new tracks that are nice. Voices are a wash, both are fine. Script I probably give the edge to remaster/WD. Some of WD’s script changes, such as Nall reminiscing about the cast of Lunar 1 before meeting Althena are far more compelling than generic I BELIEVE IN YOU HIRO/LUCIA.

However, this remaster of two old games should be half of Clair's price, yet it's more expensive. I want to replay Lunar 1 and finally play 2, but not before it's at least -60%. I bet it would sell 5-10 as many copies if it was priced adequately. They couldn't kill it better if they tried. It has 355 reviews 1.5 months later. Grandia I has around 1500.

One thing that always bothers me in the WD script takes place at the very end. Alex and Laike are talking and Alex addresses him as Dyne. To which Laike tells him the man with that name died long ago. 5 seconds later Alex says thank you…DYNE.
Just a reminder Suikoden 2 is better than both. Lunar wasn't even that good for its time when games like Chrono Trigger and FF6 already existed. Lunar's only redeeming value is that it was a very charming game, even if it wasn't a very good one it had charm but that's it. Lunar wasn't even as good as Albert Odyssey on the Saturn. Now this is an underrated gem forgotten by time.

Suikoden fucking sucked. Oh let me recruit 108 NPCs. Most of which may as well be named NPCs with how flimsy and shit their reasons for joining you are. The vast majority of them have no story relevance. Combat is mindless, inventory management was tedious. Same with rune management. The forced party was obnoxious. And the castle theme in Suikoden 1 may as well be named the ear rape track. At least Suiko2 vastly improved the army battles.

There isn't much you can do with this unless you significantly remake the whole goddamn game to the point its not DQ1 itself anymore. Single playable character, very simple story and mechanics compared to later ones. Its not like you can blame them, but a lot of it is literally walking around and grinding until you can grind to go somewhere else. I'm sure they'll add QoL features like not having to choose DOOR in the menu anymore or whatever and will probably remove the YE OLDE ENGLISH remembered from Dragon Warrior, but I can't imagine its going to do much more.

i tried the game for a couple hours on sega cd, but I didn't get "it". it seemed fairly average compared to everything else released at the time (comparing it to final fantasy, dragon quest, phantasy star, or even quintets snes releases, or lufia or breath of fire).
Was it just because of the voice acting and animations? I also tried the second game and it looked identical to the first

WD's idea of difficulty:
You get less EXP.
You get less Money.
Everything in the stores are double the price.
Spells cost more MP.
Enemies have more HP.
And... that's it. There is no new AI routine for the enemies and bosses, no damage multiplier, no other thing. Their idea of difficulty is forcing you into a fake GRINDING.
The psx version was popular because of the translation, edgy humor (about IUDs, masturbation, etc.) and the music/voice acting. You take away the humor, the good voice acting, and you are left with a very average RPG. Not terrible. But not impressive.
The appeal is in its simplicity. It doesn't try to be anything grand. You have a story about heroes, villains, and damsels you need to rescue, and there are no heavy themes or ridiculous twists beyond that.
You're a hero, you're going to save the girl. That's it, and the simplicity of it and charm of the characters is what make the series great.
I didn't grind though. I made due with less resources, longer fights, and the need to use more items.
