I agree with Renoir and Verso's perspective which is why the story felt matriarchal. It feels like those two are relatively powerless compared to the capabilities of the women in the family. When I got to the end and saw Alicia dome Renoir so hard he ragequit the painting, only for Verso to be the final remaining vestige of male reason and authority, I started to look back at the whole story through this lens. It's a pretty easy game as far as rpgs go, lots of freedom to build whoever however you want and every character's kit is pretty strong (not to mention you can just throw like 100 lumina on everyone and stack super OP shit like cheater and the one that doubles AP gain). If you play blind you'll probably roll with any random combo and feel like it's super strong. That being said if you pull up damage values, Maelle is clearly far and away the strongest. Lune is probably the weakest.

I think Verso is the "good" ending because the devs couldn't help themselves and had to make the other one darker, but her parents were in the painting for like a week which was like 50 years inside the painting. She can comfortably live an entire life in the canvas without disability before it kills her. The only reason it's a bad ending is because she's obsessed with her dead brother. Probably makes him creme pie her every night. He doesn't want that life (but I do).

Why is Verso's Axon the visages? In the canvas painted Verso does act that way ('he who guards truths with lies') but why would Renoir characterize his son that way (seeing as he only met painted Verso at the end of the game so he couldn't be aware of his dual nature)?

Maelle is her own character that died at the end of Act 2. Alicia is a different character that has just the memories of Maelle, hence her acting so differently in Act 3.

There isn't a switch that flips in that exact moment. Alicia literally lived as Maelle for a full lifetime (of 16 years anyway) before remembering who she really was. That's not something you can just forget about at the drop of a hat, and in fact that's part of the reason she wants to stay in the canvas so badly: she has a life, identity, and loved ones there because she lived as Maelle for 16 years. Beginning at the start of act 3, she becomes a strange combination of Alicia and Maelle, a different person entirely from one or the other separately. Same thing with painted Verso not being quite his own person, but also not being exactly as Aline painted him nor being the exact same as real Verso.

Finally get to the end of the game

Also worth noting: the Axon fight with the detached visages mimics that dreamlike argument Ren and young Verso had in the garden flashback. It’s less about literal knowledge and more how Renoir *perceived* Verso—fragmented, evasive, and performing a role nobody asked him to play.

It's tragic that real Verso felt he needed to be so evasive towards Renoir, when he would've easily been the family member most understanding and supportive of his choice to not paint.
