Oh shut the fuck up. No one is unpacking shit about the story, the only discussion is about the ending. No, that is not the same thing. The story itself is incredibly simplistic and straight forward, and the only reason the ending is discussed is because of the delusion of simps.

People are starved for quality. While it's certainly not the best game of all time or anything, it definitely stands out in the constant flood of garbage seen out there. So you take that fact, add in the game having a memorable story/characters, and that it uses a combat system beloved by people who are always asking for devs to go back to those days, and you get this kind of reaction. Not to mention that people just get way too invested in games and stories they care about.

People are excited about something that's genuinely good, in which that's multiplied by the fact that the industry is starved for anything above a 6/10. The reaction makes perfect sense.

A better question is, why is it whenever a game comes out with positivity and excitement about it, some people seem to be baffled by the mere thought that such a thing could happen Seriously, every time a game comes out that is even mildly popular (for good reason or not), you immediately see daily threads going, "Where is the hype coming from? Why are zoomers like this? Are marketers advertising? Why is the industry forcing this game?"

Obviously there are actual shills out there for some games, but I swear, the idea that a game could just be "good" and have some excitement in the community behind it always seems like some giant conspiracy to some people.

Sometimes a game's just decent and people get too excited. Just like people here do with some games. Look at Dragon's Dogma 2; people were fucking losing it on the sheer announcement in a sticky thread.. At least with this game it released first and people are basing the excitement on what's actually there.

Keep in mind that most normies genuinely don't know that any games exist outside of AAA slop like Assassin's Creed and it'll all start to make sense.

It's not a 9/10 unless you're the type of faggot who ignores everything because you like the characters and is obsessed with the "vibe" of the story. Mechanically it has problems, and is actually much more shallow than it appears on a surface glance, with the attack QTEs in particular being a useless and tedious addition. Every turn with melee is exactly the same, and you just move to a slightly different skill selection (that changes nothing in how you actually play that character) as you activate and stack more pictos.

Character wise it is not good. There is 1 character that could be entirely removed, her 1 in game action given to any other character, and nothing would change in the slightest. Another character ceases to have any purpose once Gustave dies. That means 3/6 of the party characters are completely disposable and contribute nothing for more than half the game. They don't even get arcs, they just exist to cry a little while in camp and do nothing.

The enemy variety sucks, and the difficulty/challenge is pathetic because of the dodge and parry mechanic. Dungeons are short, with few combat encounters; not that that matters since every combat encounter plays exactly 1 of 2 ways: use your melee set up identically to every other melee fight, or use your free aim for enemies with high dodge.

Everything about traversal is slow as shit, even with Esquie the world is so spread out and so fucking empty that the player gets to waste a lot of time just traveling. Most side dungeons are obscenely short and the rewards are, "Great, I will never use that picto, ever," which makes the travel time even worse.

Game is a 7/10 to 8/10 if one is being honest. It has a lot of mechanical problems that make it the worst of both worlds between turn based and action combat. The story is decent but it ignores a lot of the implications and themes to focus purely on the family drama, and it leaves multiple characters with no purpose. The combat is brain dead.

My wager is tourists. They don't recall the days of Anon Babble actually enjoying vidya, of all the MGQs and Recettears, and think that Anon Babble is meant to be a dumping ground where all you do is shit on games.

I know there's plenty of justifiable paranoia and feeling that everything is being marketed, because, to an extent, it is. But sometimes people are just excited because they enjoyed the game.

It's crazy honestly. It's like you said, people do get excited about shit here. I'm seeing daily, 300+ post Deltarune threads getting hyped for the new chapters. I'm seeing that Fantasy Life game with tons of threads of people avidly discussing their progression. This game as well gets daily threads talking about the endings, builds, and other bullshit.

There is plenty of marketing and false hype out there, 100%. But it's crazy that a population here and throughout the industry just seems baffled by the concept that a game might just be good and that people are excited.

Because Americans tend to hyperbolise and the bar for stories in games is extremely low.

People care about stories that get them emotionally invested and this game does that in spades, even if the writing has some flaws. The difference between a 9/10 and a 10/10 falls entirely on emotional investment. Everything else is well executed and different enough for the experience to be enjoyable as a whole. This game got big after it came out, despite the initial Oblivion shadow drop hype. The interest in this game is organic which is why it causes so much seethe.
