Open world doesn't make sense. It's made pointless due to having warp points every-fucking-where
make it semi-open world like dark souls or elden ring, if anything. remove climbing and the paraglider which both just streamline the hell out of moving around

I feel that weapon durability is needed. It works like ammo in a survival shooter game. The big problem is that resources are so fucking plentiful.
No wonder why the game works best when you have little resources and have to be creative/smart using them like in the BotW DLC trials and in the proving ground shrines in TOTK

It's just a casual game series. It can't get very deep or hard.

There's really nothing to fix without starting from a clean slate. It's a game that got a massive time budget and was directed/produced by two individuals (Fujibayashi and Aonuma respectively) who apparently can't bring a project to fruition on time or with any kind of coherence.
Even the fact that it's split into two games is fundamentally rooted in a scheduling conflict that forced them to put out a placeholder game (BotW) just so that they could sunset the Wii U.
The fact that BotW was as good as it was only serves to underline that open world games are all too frequently the result of reckless, overambitious management that needed to be taken to task much earlier.
Weapon durability is necessary, the problem is that there is just too much of an emphasis on actually hitting things, Players are lead to the mistaken assumption that a stick is good for hitting things, rather than being good at setting things on fire.
A lot of that stems from the mediocre UI, changes made for Switch parity and bandaid solutions though.

- 100% unique world (no Hyrule, Zelda, or Ganon) that's smaller than BotW but more condensed. Feels closer to OoT/MM/TP in terms of weird dark fantasy. Lots of strange and unique biomes and new races. New memorable villain that's a legitimate threat.
- Heavy focus on dungeons. At least 9 major dungeons. No shrines, instead there are fewer but larger themed mini-dungeons that each explore a puzzle gimmick. Also some combat gauntlets here and there. All the mini-dungeons and gauntlets take away all your stuff like Eventide. Major dungeons are designed like classic Zelda dungeons (interconnected, architectural, lock and key, combat, new abilities) but integrate BotW physics.
- Underwater exploration. One biome is 90% underwater and leads to a water dungeon.
- No more blood moon. All enemies die permanently. Clearing out enemy camps gives valuable rewards. Clearing an entire region of enemy camps can lead to NPCs taking over. New enemy camps and roaming enemies can spawn in after important story events (e.g. clearing a dungeon).
- Way more enemy variety. New enemy types are introduced over time.
- New weapons are found from rare chests and quest rewards. Weapons have more diverse movesets with a larger set of attacks. Weapons have higher durability and when they break they become unusable instead of disappearing. Weapons can be repaired with a special item or via blacksmith NPCs. If Link has no items equipped he uses punches and kicks (weak damage and low range but can be upgraded by NPCs at special dojos). Enemies still drop weapons but they work like in Wind Waker.
- Food now only gives buffs. You get a limited number of bottles (for potions/fairies) that heal in real-time.
- Menus actually have soul.
- Link has 10% more muscle mass.

Oh yeah and
- No golden turds. Environmental puzzles still exist but they spawn chests and give a wide variety of items. Also the item that shows you where they are is given from a quest instead of DLC.

It's too much to fix without fixing society first, and that's already too far gone to be accomplished any way other than spiritually. Many retards are moving to Japan and hoping for the best while the crackheaded gaywads that run amok in the West continue to metastasize around their success in influencing major franchises to the extent of Zelda becoming a gay fanfic with some token gameplay and indie visual design. Nintendo is on their side, so any good suggestions will go right into the trash at this point.

TotK is only the "better game" if you treat it like a checklist of features and don't care about the actual experience of playing it.
No shit a lot of people aren't going to like trudging through the same world as a game from 6 years ago. That level of shameless derivativeness isn't exciting.
Even ignoring the recycling and focusing exclusively on the new content, there's a lot of major problems. The Depths are repetitive as fuck, the sky is repetitive and sparse, the story is dogshit, Fuse is tedious, and vehicles despawn at the drop of a hat.

Level design is hard, much easier to generate a bunch of terrain and then copypaste stuff on top.

Weapon Durability could work but it needs to scale. What I mean is the later game weapons should take way longer to break. It will make it rewarding to find a really good weapon but still make you think about using it.

Totk is one of my top 10 games and I have played near a thousand games.

Just like past Zelda games, which didn't have this problem. Someone was probably hitting a wall too much during a test play, someone else made a joke about the weapon breaking and either Aonuma or that other chucklehead thought it was a good idea to make your weapons degrade. Meaningful reward are needed, even if it's just gems or rupees.

There's nothing wrong with switching up the formula, but TOTK and BOTW had so many problems that you're purposely ignoring. For example, travel is meaningless because of how easy it is to get from point A to point B. Once you figure out how to make the hoverbike, the world stops having any kind of pushback or challenge, and instant free fast travel guarantees that you never have to invest time or effort into a return trip. You can just bypass every single obstacle in your way. I firmly believe that you should never be given anything for free in a game, otherwise you don't appreciate it, and fast travel is one of those things.

In other games, where you have to manually create your own fast travel points, or at least invest some kind of physical resource into them, it feels much more earned. You respect the time saved by using it, because you usually have to deal with the backtracking without it.

Add real dungeons.
