This game has NOT aged well lmao. How does Anon Babble feel about it now?
This game has NOT aged well lmao. How does Anon Babble feel about it now?
would pay for a (good) remake ngl
Best SH and it's not even close.
Eileen shaving
this
It has aged better than SH2, actually.
More bosses and creature variety, more of the town is explorable.
everytime lol
if a remake of a game comes out (sh2) the elitist fart sniffers immediately change their favorite to whatever inst easily available
Yet it's the best in the series, go figure.
I literally just beat it last month. As long as you play on easy mode and use a guide its fine. Its clunky sure but the camera work is excellent and the atmosphere is great.
Sometimes is that, sometimes it’s “this franchise was always shit” but what’s most important is that Anon Babbles ruined something else for themself.
Still as good as I remember. Currently doing a 10-star run, wish me luck
As long as you play on easy mode and use a guide its fine
not at all lol, i recently played it for the first time on hard and it was pretty easy, no guide
Silent Hill 1 is still the greatest horror game ever made.
The opening nightmare sequence alone is one of the best scenes in all of horror media, including film.
Just be sure to play it on a PS1 or a later PS2 because otherwise your game will look like this...
or you could be normal and play it on PS3 or emulation which will solve the resolution-switching problems
Still a great game. I pity those who are filtered by the fact that it was released before they were born.
whatever inst
else for themself
Hello saar!
GOOD MORNING SAAR!
New game good oold game bad benchod yes?
This is either bait or you are the most pathetic person on this board at the current moment.
forgot the webm!
SH1 and 2 give you tons of small arms ammo and good melee weapons to kill pretty much every enemy if you please, even with them respawning. SH3 uses a dynamic difficulty system that deletes nearly all late-game ammo pickups if you have been saving your ammo the whole game, which means anyone playing it like a survival horror game will likely run out of ammo on the final boss.
People can only see what games are not, what they are.
Name me a modern action-adventure that has a campaign as long, as diverse, with as many enimes, and new set pieces? Even Sh2 and SH3 cut back on everything.
People also see these through the lens of action games. they want i-frames, dodges, combos, etc like it's Devil May Cry or Max Payne or something. You're supposed to be playing an everyman.
From a technical side, it being PS1 only limits it greatly, and it needs a full Decomp so it can be ported to PC at 60fps. The game has low fps and a lot of input lag on consoles.
One big improvement that Sh2-3 did was that they sped up the startup time for animations. In Sh1 it's a little slow to get ready or change direction.
Total lack of enemy variety is Sh2's real achilles heel. Also the boss fights you do have are in tiny cramped rooms, while Sh1 has more of them in bigger arenas so they feel like real fights.
that gay hop
Wait, is that the actual intended use for the hop? I never used it.
It’s not our fault that Anon Babble “culture” is built out of the most easily manipulatable retards on the internet.
Also, dummy, both those comments were in defense of the original sh2.
Funny, I finished it for the first time yesterday. I thought it was great.
It starts showing the ps1 limitations near the end when things start just popping in right in front of you in a particularly jarring way. But in enclosed spaces and throughout most of the game, it looks gorgeous.
What the Silent Hill clones & homages completely missed from 1 is the sound design and the limited amount of dialogue.
When I first entered Nowhere in the school, it was immediately clear how the harsh noises that form the sound are rhythmic and layered. I'd walk into a group of enemies and 1 or 2 rhythmic noises are added to make me more freaked out. And not just when the enemies die, but when you've done everything in an area, it also settles down.
Harry is in this nightmare (reïnforced by the flooring being metal grates 99% of the time, so you feel like you could fall through this world or dream any moment) and has to head into the horrors if he wants to find his daughter. And that'll fuck with his mind, just as the sounds will fuck with the player and ideally make them unnerved.
For the dialogue & text, it's all short and to the point. No reading an entire youtube essay worth of text for the singular relevant line of text.
Not aged well? Maybe the tank controls if you're not used to it. But I prefer it over many games released in the last decades.
SH2 is the worst one and I'm glad the remake exists and makes it worse
This game has NOT aged well lmao.
I would say it aged better than ever what with all the .io horror games with ps1 graphics. But you already know that
If by Pathetic you mean I don't like clunky melee combat and know it wont be fun then yes you are indeed correct since all easy mode gives you is more ammo and health.
use emulator
go to settings ant overclock virtual cpu to 2x speed
cap game at 60
use original 480p, no widescreen hacks or stretching (other than in-game)
that's how you play psx games
lmao
Yes, SH1 copied the dodge from Homecoming.
Ammo and health scarcity is the whole point of a survival horror game. It's not about smooth action combat.
Sure, it looks better to most people, but I like the authentic visuals that people experienced on release. As close to that as possible is preferable and all emulators can do that well enough for PS1.
Its aged fine. I lost my PS1 copy but bought it on the PS3 store years ago, just replayed it for Halloween and enjoyed it
It aged the best out of all silent hills, the graphics especially. Perfect amount of low-poly where your imagination fills in the blank and the only low-poly game that looks good to most people. There's a reason it inspired a ton of low-poly indie horror games.
I thought it was alright when I played it last month. The weakest of the first 3 games which still makes it the third or fourth best game in the series. Not sure what all it's hardcore fans see in it. It's got a lot of enemy variety but most are kind of annoying and not very compelling, basic gameplay is just as jank and clunky as the other three. Being a Ps1 game gives a slightly different vibe though, that's cool.
It's still kind of wild that the main reason SH has such thick fog and darkness is because of those high-poly and detailed (at the time) environments and models.
The game chugs in several spots on original hardware from simply having too many polygons rendered.
I played it for the first time last month, and it's fine. I started 2 recently, but idk, I kind of like the feel of this one more. Only problem is I didn't understand the story, but I got the worst ending anyways.
I haven't seen any good low-poly indie horror games
thread saved
idk if it is saved but it's not an official Silent Hill thread unless Eileen is shaving within
I played every mainline Silent Hill game before the remake came out and 1 is still my favorite
Alisa and Crow Country are both good and done in that style. Tormented Souls is more PS2 era graphics but has the same control/camera style as the old horror games
Good is debatable but Puppet Combo churns games like these constantly
I am fine with ammo and health scarcity as long as it doesn't ruin the gameplay but the melee combat is so awful it sucks the fun out of the game.
the big hammer you pick up in the otherworld hospital generator room is one of the best weapons in the game. just stand in front of an enemy coming towards you and hold the X button, it will always send them backwards if not stunning them too.
It has aged better than first 3 RE games
I haveonly ever been able to use the hammer against the human nurses and doctors and later children. The rest of the enemies are too fast to be weak tot he hammer.
People that say SH1 hasn't aged well don't even know what they're saying.
You can still play SH1 and have a fantastic time that is in-line with the devs' vision.
Compare it to something like Alone in the Dark (the original). Also a horror game, however the game's loop literally involves you dying over and over while needing to save-state to progress, because most threats catch you off-guard without warning.
Silent Hill 1 still holds up, there's no difference between playing it and something like RE1 Remake or even SH2 Remake.
The visuals, sound, all of that would absolutely fly if an indie game did copied it. Again, compare Signalis or the recent Crow County, the same skills between all three of these games translate and the creative vision still holds up.
Honestly if it makes melee combat that easy then at that point why not just use guns anyway?
I liked that the puzzles scaled with the difficulty level. Wish there had been more of that sort of thing in 2 and 3
This is the most incorrect statement ever said. SH1 wasn't even as good as RE1 at the time it came out and years later, having played both recently, RE1 is a way better game still. It's shocking how well RE1 has aged in fact.
I liked that the puzzles scaled with the difficulty level. Wish there had been more of that sort of thing in 2 and 3
Anon, 2 and 3 separated Riddle and Action difficulties. It's a bafflingly simple solution that I wish more games had.
If Sh1 gets a decomp and PC port they'll probably separate action and puzzle difficulty like S2-3 did.
It feels right to save ammo in a survival horror game when I know I can easily kill an enemy with melee or run around it.
Now that we're talking about it, why was the piano puzzle memed so hard on this board? I thought it was an amazing puzzle, but I only spent like 60 seconds figuring it out. Did people really struggle that much?
Just looking at Crow Country steam page looks more like a goofy Resident Evil than SH, Signalis too although it looks far more different than either
I was in grade 8 and I over thought it.
Is it weird that the original Alone in the Dark scared me more than SH1?
Even the first monster you fight, as goofy as it looks now, was terrifying to me because it looked so erratic and uncanny.
I like Signalis but my problem with it is that it tries to be really artsy and 2deep4u. Its fun, replayable and the game feels creepy but its like EVA with all the symbolism and shit
Only attempt to fight when you are indoors unless you absolutely have to while outside.
The roaches are too small to hit reliably so I always switch to the handgun but for most enemies indoors I try to melee them with the hammer once I pick it up. The hanging monsters in the sewers are also kinda tough to hit with melee, the shotgun works well.
100%. Sh1 and 3 are the best in the series. Harry > James
Crow Country (think "Racoon City"), is FF7's graphics meets Resident Evil storyline. Everything indie is completely incestuous, which makes youf eel like "I've seen this before".
It's all just nerds making remakes of their favorite games, which is why despite there being thousands of indies they are the least creative genre.
If you just run a random number generator for Famicom games, you'll find way more variety in terms of story and gameplay.
That's fair. The puzzle that really sucked was the Zodiac one. Felt like one of the designers 10 year old kid made it.
Someone in my 10 grade study hall was playing SH1 on a PSP, and we all had to work together to solve that piano puzzle because we couldn't grasp at first that the silent keys were the correct keys to press.
We ended up counting the birds in the poem and then counting the silent keys to realize the solution, and when the cutscene played of the silver medal falling we all cheered.
Lost in vivo is fantastic
I beat it this week and thought it aged like a fine wine
In certain areas the placement of the camera and the way it moves along with you is kubrick-esque, why aren't there more modern games that make use of the camera in such creative ways? AAA companies are obsessed with making movie games yet SH1 is still a better movie game because it doesn't use over-the-shoulder nor first-person view.
Also the gritty textures when entering the otherworld are great, looks better than most stock 3D assets used nowadays.
This game has NOT aged well lmao.
It has.
How does Anon Babble feel about it now?
Still the very best SH game, and one of the very best survival horror titles ever created.
BTFO of the SH2 (original), which easily beats thhe shit out of the de-make.
why aren't there more modern games that make use of the camera in such creative ways?
Because:
1. zoomer devs have no cinema background, and only take "inspiration" from other games.
2. doing cinematic cameras, or just about anything else than OTS chase cam or FP view, in the off-shelf game engines (Unreal, Unity...) is surprisingly tough. Even replicating the Zelda 64 / Tomb Raider 1-3 style is shockingly difficult, hence filtering the lazy hacks.
That is, if they are even old enough to have played anything than Uncharted / TLOU style 3rd person games at all.
3. The casual "wider audiences" the forementioned lazy hacks make their games for generally prefer more action-oriented experiences, and often judge ANY game by how "good" (read: easy and flashy) the combat is.
Watch any zoomer rant video about RE1-3 or SH1-3, and generally one of the first things they whine about is "not being able to SEE where I'm shooting at". They usually try to mask this under petty arguments like "it ruins the immersion! FP / OTS is way more immersive! Puts you right in the game!...", implying that they are unable to immerse themselves into the general mood and story of the games, but instead NEED to be able to relate to the (CHARACTER).
It was also just a couple weeks ago when some nu-fag zoomer on Anon Babble was getting filtered by the SH1, crying about that he cannot kill every enemy that he came across since he keeps running out of ammo in the streets. When instructed to just avoid enemies outdoors by running or stealthing past them, he threw even bigger hissy fit, thinking that's cheesing and breaking the game.
No, I'm not shitting you.
spbp
I personally didn't really feel it was artsy and 2deep4u. We had threads hitting bump limit for a couple of weeks when the game was out with people deciphering the plot and making connections. It definitely took some effort to make sense of it, but it wasn't 2deep4u. Only the alternate ending with the King in Yellow felt a bit odd as mostly it's own standalone thing. Why have it when it's not closely interwoven with the main plots?
this alley scene will stay with me till the day i die. so fucking good.
I actually like it a lot.
I never even liked SH back when it was new, I have never understood the hype about this rather dull re knockoff. The remake does look okay, but back then it was a weekend rental you played and forgot about so where did all this hype come from? The entire series up to the remake sold 9 million units. Thats all the games together. Re5 beats that all by itself. Forced hype.
You should honestly bought a Nintendo instead of a Playstation.
It's so good that The Movie copied it nearly 1:1.
Same seems to be happening with the upcoming SH2 movie adaptation.
So many iconic scenes were totally butchered in the SH2 remake because of the generic, super obscuring OTS camera.
Tranny falseflag thread. Sorry people stopped caring about 2s shit tier remake already, troonie.
Based and truthpilled.
Sorry I exposed your game as never really being that popular. The remake looks okay at any rate.
Piano puzzle was shit, dropped it there.
REtard doesn't get Silent Hill
And? Is this news? Go suck more crapcom turds then
Resident evil 1(actual RE1, not the remake) is leagues better, they did a poor job of trying to rip it off gameplay wise.
DSP solved it in 3 minutes, so you're more retarded than him. Congratulations, retard.
How... how did you know about my game?
that hurt and btw the remake was dogshit
RE1 is completely mogged by RE2
SH2 doesn't have great gameplay but the atmosphere is timeless
I never even liked SH back when it was new, I have never understood the hype about this rather dull re knockoff.
Oldfag here.
I *thought* it to be a yet another "dull RE knockoff" when I first saw it in gaming mags and such. I'd already beaten RE1-3 at the time, so I thought I'd seen it all.
Then I played the demo disc, and I was TERRIFIED.
Nothing in the RE franchise comes close to being as disturbing and haunting as the stuff portrayed in the SH franchise. They're the sort of games that will keep you unnerved even after turning off the system.
Plus I still vividly remember us kids at the school yard talking how cool it was to use a steel pipe as a weapon.
Later on, SH2 being a PS2 flagship title and generally amping up the symbolism and themes, it literally nailed itself as the new quintessential horror franchise. It also legit helped elevate the games to a more mature stage, outright pushing the idea of games = art to mainstream media.
The early 00s was truly the golden era for us horror dorks.
The remake does look okay
No it does not. It's pure shit. Literally everything gone wrong the past 15 years when it comes to vidya.
where did all this hype come from?
Contrary to (You)r and the Jewnami's fake narrative, SH was ALWAYS popular as fuck. The first 4 games all sold Platinum (that's "Greatest Hits" for you burgers), some of them twice in a row. They made TWO Hollywood films, comic book adaptations and tons of merch of the games.
No, they were not mega blockbusters like RE, but they didn't need to be. SH inspired the entire horror media so much that younger folks can't even seem to appreciate the innovations coined by the Team Silent.
RE5
Yeah, because one of the most hated RE games that started appealing to literal Call Of Halo audiences for easier bucks is totally the game you want to bring up when talking about classic slow-burn survival horror franchise.
I enjoy RE2 but no, RE1 is the superior experience. I also enjoy the original RE1 more than the remake of it(though it's still good too).
SH has always been super popular. It's just the general availability of the games that have always sucked, especially since zoomers cannot into PC gaming and piracy no more.
And let's not forget that one of the biggest phenomenas of 2015 was the now canceled Playable Teaser for the Silent Hills project. People are still paying crazy amounts of money for the PS4s with PT installed on it.
Those 'people' are barely human and don't care about Silent Hill at all
I'm still at the school and I'm enjoying it so far. However, as a completionist, I'm kinda paranoid about making stupid decisions, so I need some help.
I would like to know:
How many endings each game has
What should I keep in mind to get all those endings (e.g. "Oh, in the first Silent Hill you just have to worry about getting certain hidden items, in Silent Hill 2 you need to worry about items AND the amount of enemies you kill)
How does one get 10 stars (I assume that's the best score)
Basically, I just want some vague, spoiler-free tips to help me fully complete these games.
So far I've been avoiding killing enemies as much as I can, having only killed the bat monster at the café because I was forced to, but I have a feeling I'm just making the game harder for me for no reason and that there aren't even any endings locked behind this. Probably related to the 10 stars ranking, though.
Kek, so I'm not the only one. The puzzle is actually extremely simple. It's just that the puzzle mentions stuff like "a silent Dove" which threw me off. I assumed it was telling me "this one is a broken/silent key," therefore implying that I also had to press non-broken keys to complete the puzzle.
When you get out of the first sewer do not B-line for the docks/lighthouse or you'll lock yourself into a bad end. There's an optional 'questline' to do with Kaufman. That's the only way to get 1 of 2 good ends.
10 stars
Don't bother thinking about this on your first run
Zoomers cannot handle tank control, dutch angle shots and fixed cameras meant to obscure the enemies.
What's new?
I see. Thanks.
Don't bother thinking about this on your first run
Yeah, I'm definitely not going to worry about it in my first run. I have already died a few times anyway, which I assume has already locked me out of a 10-star run.
Silent Hill is psychological horror. RE is just an action game with zombies.
psychological
psueds throwing around jargon like it actually means something
psychological is a real word, psychological horror is a real genre, however only SH2 actually meets the requirements of being that in this series. SH1 is about the worlds coolest dad beating the devil to death with a hammer to save his daughter. It's just as campy and actiony as RE it's just scarier and more serious in tone, like the different between Nightmare on Elm Street 1 and Freddy's Dead.
Silent hill 1 has the best otherworld transition scene in the series and it's not even close
I keep hoping they'll match the moment you go through the clock tower but so far they haven't and I'm halfway through SH4
SH1 has plenty of psychological horror moments with phantom sounds, ghostly figures, unseen monsters, and a lot of things only resemble real-life creatures just enough that our brains fill in the blanks to make it scarier.
It's just that the horror and tension is so intense during the Otherworld segments that it feels like all of the game is in-your-face; this is meant to be a demon projecting a nightmare onto reality, it's going to be relentless and brutal at times.
Speaking of horror games, why nobody ever talk about the Fatal Frame series?
Never played it until last month
Had a lot of fun. Best of the series.
You're a faggot OP.
NOT aged well
and?
Does that make the game worse?
Does that make young people DESERVE to play it?
transitioning in real-time as you walk through the alleyway for looking for Cheryl
going down a ladder into a clock tower, straight down a hallway, and up a ladder only to end up emerging from the same clock tower
finding every door outside an elevator locked then trying the 4th floor that you could've sworn wasn't there earlier...
being pulled into the nightmare directly after lighting an altar to the demon, appearing at the hospital with Lisa, then waking up in the Otherworld back where the altar was
becoming a nightmare before Harry's eyes as he realizes what is happening
entering Alessa's nightmare and descending an elevator after unique nearly first-person camera angles
all of the Otherworld transitions were amazing and memorable
Never finished 1.
Games do not age, you fucking retard.
You are the reason there's so few good new entries on old series anymore, people just want to play the same game with "updated" gameplay.
We do every so often. They're good but I think due to the traditional Japanese aesthetic a lot of people are put off. The camera combat as well. I like them all.
2 > 1 > 4 > 3 > 5 > Spirit Camera
It mogs the SH2 demake and youre on crack if you believe otherwise
What's actually locking you out of 10 star is the fact it is your first run and you haven't seen all 5 endings on this save file, damage taken doesn't really count against you.
You need to get all the endings first to allow a 10 star rank, if I remember correctly. But doing a 10 star rank in 1 is incredibly fun. I did it when I was 12 or something on original hardware and the playstyle required to do it is night and day compared to a normal playthrough. Turn aiming to over the shoulder and it plays like an archaic RE4. Just have to hold down the camera look button the whole time.
Why yes I did see suzi upload a new video about SH1, how did you know?
Its bretty gud.
In fact, I finished it some weeks ago. Even made a thread here on Anon Babble because Cybil was filtering me.
Got bad+ ending first and then good+ in my second run. No guides
Also, Silent Hill soundtrack peaked here
youtu.be
I didn't know that was out yet
School or hospital? I still don’t know but I edge towards school
I also edge toward schools. Specifically elementary schools. I sniff the little kids bike seats and edge.
Sorry I exposed your game as never really being that popular.
Okay so Silent Hill haters are just midwits who unironically have fun by "shitposting." Good to know. No wonder you enjoy Resident Evil 1 and hate Silent Hill so much when your idea of a "good time" is going on to Anon Babble and making a terrible post lmao.
Silent Hill 1 fans = well thought out quality posts that contribute
Resident Evil 1 fans = mindless low quality drivel
It's just as campy and actiony as RE it's just scarier and more serious in tone
I really like thinking about SH1 as before it had any sequels. Its basically a wash of american classic horror, but its all tripped out. Game jumps you around like you're in an actual dream. If you have no preceding knowledge of Silent Hill lore (like when it first came out and was the only in the series) you wouldn't have a clear idea of what exactly is going on until basically the end. Has all sorts of potential leads the game sets up. Like it could actually be a nightmare, post-death purgatory, or some type of drug trip because that was an actual aspect of 1's story. 3 continuing 1's story was sort of an injustice honestly. I really wish they stuck with the original plan of making 3 a separate story like 2. And I wish the series wasn't locked into always being some Dostoevsky judgement narrative to every protagonist post 2. The way 1 presents its narrative in the vacuum of itself was so precious.
zombie dogs
zombie kids
zombie nurses/doctors
giant lizard
giant worm
giant moth
battletoads in the sewers
wtf is this silent hill or raccoon city?
Ooooh... Alright then. I was assuming that to get 10 stars one would have to do a run under a time limit, avoiding saving and killing as few enemies as possible, and not dying or something really hard like that. Had no idea that getting all endings is a requirement, but now that I think about it that makes sense.
Thanks, i've recently finished 1 but never saw a thread on my favourite mongolian board.
desu Konami wanted a Resident Evil
RE1 was completely mogged by RE2
SH doesn't have great gameplay but the atmosphere is timeless
only voice acting is shit, it's still amazing for a ps1 title
Wrong
There was never meant to be any sequel but Konami forced them to make more because Resident Evil. It's like how Bioshock is such a great story and setting on its own but then it gets ruined by Bioshock 2 because it is deceptively adding onto what was an entirely self-contained and complete storyline in 1.
only SH2 actually meets the requirements
I really wish reddit hill 2/demake midwits would bother playing other horror games instead of watching youtube essays all day
The first 4 games all sold Platinum (that's "Greatest Hits" for you burgers)
I have never seen a Greatest Hits/Platinum/whatever release of 3 or 4
I think there's a horror games general on Anon Babble where you can talk more frequently. I see threads more during Halloween.
School
im genuinely curious on what was so "feminine" about Harry, that they had to make him a woman in the film adaptation? is it his running cycle?
Kek you are fucking obsessed with what people think, as soon as RoR gained some popularity you would shitpost that game too
The Resident Evil movies starred Milla Jovovich.
that's it
This game has NOT aged well lmao.
How has it not aged?
Refined Tank Controls that don't get in the way, and indeed, are the only way to play the game with fixed camera angles.
The story is interesting and vague
The enemies actually scary (ahead at first)
The environment unsettling.
About 8-10 hours long which is very long for a single player game of its kind, and doesn't outstay its welcome.
What did you think hadn't aged well?
however only SH2 actually meets the requirements of being that IN THIS SERIES
It is the only one in the Silent Hill franchise that is an actual psychological horror, not the only psychological horror game ever. You just didn't finish that sentence before you posted. I guess you could argue SH4, too to be fair, I barely remember that one.
I thought hipsters died like 15 years ago? How are they still a thing? I fucking hated those contrarian losers and yes, I played Rule of Rose and other less popular horror games like Hellnight
Ask me how i can tell you were filtered by the tank controls, silent hill 1 aged great, its better than 3 and in a few ways better than 2
I should say I was wrong, most of the western SH games are psychological horror imitating SH2, just very badly. I don't even think of them as the same franchise so I completely forgot them when saying that.
Thats just projecting.
If a person dont like a particular popular thing doesnt mean they hate all popular things
That anon is going to get a heartattack when some youtuber younger and richer than him makes an essay video for sh1 kek
Fatal Frame had the mistake of fucking off to the Wii and WiiU for 15 years so everyone forgot about it.
I was assuming that to get 10 stars one would have to do a run under a time limit, avoiding saving and killing as few enemies as possible, and not dying or something really hard like that.
You should look up the criteria. You actually need to save 4 or less times, get certain amounts of kills at different ranges, pick up a certain amount of items (special and nonspecial), have all the aforementioned endings, do it in about an hour and a half total, and maybe a few other things.
In total you basically need to plan your whole route to check all the boxes. You need to plan your route so that you DO kill enemies and pick up items on top of finishing the game as fast as possible. It was immensely fun and turns more into an action game with a dirty ass industrial aesthetic. 10 star Harry was on the drugs the locals sell.
It's a damn shame. 1 is seriously underrated in its story presentation. Every cutscene is excellent. Even its stilted voice acting works in favor of its delirious narrative. I like Heather and all, but 3's story is nothing compared to how warped 1 is.
They were definitely tripping on something in the early Team Silent days.
youtube.com
That schizo does though, he is pretty easy to spot since he always brings muh reddit muh youtuber
And yes I'm old enough to remember when sh2 wasn't popular and was actually hated at first for being less bloody. It was only appreciated years later, hell, even SH4 is getting some love despite being disliked at first.
I mean I'm not young either, but I'm not pathetic enough to seethe at younger people
No PC release
I stand by to what I said.
Every game in the mainline has a heavy psychological aspect to it. The whole cult story line really filtered you that hard huh? The "le i killed my wife and mlthe town made me stupid" is not that deep...
I played it for Halloween
It has aged PHENOMENALLY well
Sophisticated controls
Incredible graphics
Amazing sound
Scary as fuck
everytime lol
yes, EVERY time, specially with gamecube games.
RE fags clamored for REzero since forever
all RE games come out on steam and ps4
all of us see RE zero isnt that great after the train part + no boxes
code veronica becomes the fan favorite
Paper Mario TTYD fags treat TTYD like the best mario rpg since forever
remake comes out
25% cry about the remake being slower
75% just disappear
paper mario 64 becomes the fan favorite
I've been a super mario rpg fag since i first played it in 2000 and i'll die a super mario rpg fag until the day i die. Great game, great music, great pacing, fun remake.
Jesus why are you so fucking triggered.
When you get out of the first sewer do not B-line for the docks/lighthouse or you'll lock yourself into a bad end.
See? The way I play games is to first map out the edges of the map then work downwards, and Sh1 basically punishes you for that. First time i rented it from blockbuster i was locked into the bad ending, and didn't even know it. I thought that I had skipped a chunk of the map, but figured there'd no way that they'd have important information or sidequests locked away on that side of the map. Then I checked Sh1 guide books and lo and behold: a massive end-game side quest.
Dude you don't want to be in falcom game threads, there is always that retard
FALCOM IS SHIT UNLESS THEY BRING BACK THAT OBSCURE GAME I SAW ON WIKI
Sorry buddy but a game about a totally normal guy fighting an evil satanic cult is not really psychological horror story in any meaningful way. It could be, in theory, if the story was different if the focus was different. But it's not and neither is 3 really.
Can't wait for them to remake SH1 to see you defend SH1 game boy game
2 is an attempt to broaden the series, and the Rebirth ending more or less has James become a member of The Order and try to resurrect his wife.
James: Mary. You look so peaceful. Forgive me for waking you. But without you, I just can’t go on. I can’t live without you, Mary. This town, Silent Hill.... The Old Gods haven’t left this place.... And they still grant power to those who venerate them.... Power to defy even death....
Then 3 expands upon this, by showing the Order has several gods they worship. The game has several files showing that SH has always had odd incidents outside of the order, and natives worshipped the area as having special reverence.
It has a few poorly thought out things like that. The key not spawning in the doghouse unless you read the note first is another one. You can't get the hospital map if you don't pick it up before it shifts to the otherworld either.
1 is more coherent in the overarching lore of the series despite the writing becoming too absurd by the end, 2 its like a "gaiden" game, so it makes less sense whats the nature of Silent Hill if you take Alessa and the cult out of the ecuation, but the themes and execution are better, 2 is the epitome of SH series.
3 has its charm but its the weaker of the original trilogy. 4 has an amazing concept and ideas but the execution sucks, the second half is a slog
I liked PE2, it was a nice RE like game
Surprised SE doesnt try to resurrect the ip seeing how popular RE remakes are
SH4 modders made some modern camera and tank control that unironically works better, since the original was 2d controls and weird cameras. Could be good to remake
The key not spawning in the doghouse unless you read the note first is another one.
It's because Harry has no reason to look inside the doghouse.
the second half is a slog? how so, i just reached the hospital
Square is far too incompetent to even think about such a thing
Why would Harry stoop down to look under the roof of a random doghouse?
The Puzzles sucks
How to save the cop is bullshit
Taking 2-3 into account, The Order are just the latest incarnation of a religion that's been in the area since native times, and they keep trying to summon their god into the physical world to transform it.
It really sounds like him
I dont even know which youtuber he is talking about
The game is amazing fuck off zoomer shitter
I think it is more like the demon hitched onto Christian settlers praying in the area of the lake's spiritual power, and it found willing worshippers after making contact with them through the powers of the town/lake.
Before them, natives used it to contact ancestors and other spirits but nothing demonic happened.
Well, guess I was kinda right. (I find the fact that you actually need to KILL instead of AVOIDING enemies rather interesting. Will definitely make it more of an action game, as you say. Much different from the play-style of a first run.)
I was avoiding looking it up to avoid spoilers but since I need to get all the endings first, I guess I should just stop thinking about it for now and look it up later.
10 star Harry was on the drugs the locals sell.
Kek.
Did Kaufmann poop in the shower?
Even with all we've seen there's some ambiguity:
1. Is the spiritual power inherently nightmarish or only how it's used?
2. Is the demon an avatar of the power or the other way around? Does the demon give the land power?
3. Do the demons feed off of negative emotions and nightmares?
4. It seems that it feeds back human nightmares in some form into the physical world no matter who is invovled. SH1 is Alessa's nightmare after all.
5. Is the town's power consciously driven or more something uncoscnious that's driven?
the native religion isn't really specified and it could just as easily been as demonic.
And it sure as shit ain't therapy town: it draws in James, Angela, Eddie, but it seems dead set on torturing and killing them.
Square lost the rights for Parasite Eve. It's a dead IP.
Demons in Christian occult stories are known for feeding off negative energy and hate, mocking their victims, and confusing them by mixing the truth with lies.
That pretty much describes the town's powers after Silent Hill 1 (or Dahlia's ritual on Alessa if we consider anything past 4 canon...). It's not a therapist town, it's either being controlled directly by a demon or the spiritual power has been forever perverted by the malevolence of the demon.
I rented this a long time ago as a kid but just played it during October. It was totally fine. A less challenging RE clone with some neat ideas and good ambience. I'm planning on playing the PS2 version of 2 to better understand what people like so much about this series, but at the moment I much prefer RE and Fatal Frame:
No they didn't. They had a Parasite Eve event in their FF gacha last year.
Yeah, it's definitely demonic. The therapy town is a misunderstanding of 2, where James can manage to overcome the town and esape. But he's the exception to the rule. There's tons of bodies and notes around of people who say they're seeing monsters and they appear to be other people who get trapped in fog world and just DIE. Then you have half the cast of SH2 dying in the town, and James either dying in one ending or falling under the spell of a sucubus named Maria in another, or becoming a full blown insane satan worshipper in another. Most of James' endings are actually BAD.
They only saw the superficial elements of SH2's storyline, and ignored how it was trying to tie back into 1 and 3. DEMONS EVERYWHERE.
started this yesterday
youtube.com
doesn't seem too bad yet, already gave me one good scare and atmosphere is really good
use a guide its fine
How much of a retard do you have to be to need a guide for Silent Hill. I beat this game when I was nine.
Never played a SH game until I played this one a couple weeks ago. I thought it was pretty great. Does a lot to build atmosphere, and doesn't do any jumpscare bullshit. It also had genuinely good puzzles, something I forgot used to be a lot more common in games. I've also heard people shit on tank controls for my entire life, but they were totally fine for a slower-paced game like this. Maybe it's worse on a shittier D-pad, but it was pretty responsive once I got used to it.
If you think it aged poorly, you probably think that about every PS1 game.
I think it aged rather well. The places don't overstay their welcome and the atmosphere is always agressive to spooky. Tension is very high most of the time and the story has interesting hooks to keep you playing and engaged.
Only part that drags a bit is the late game investigation surrounding Kaufman. Not a fan of the sewers either, but the gameplay twist that your radio doesn't work down below was a welcome fuckery.
t, played it via emulator on steam deck.
I think the Silent Hill series is sort of ground zero for today's modern lorefags. In the late 2000s I knew multiple troubled, proto egirls who wanted to tell me gay stuff about pyramid head. Good series that was pointlessly kept going after 3 & 4, but I think that's understandable, especially given how Konami was fucked up in the 2010s.
Its insanely easy to get lost when youre switching between the normal and nightworld world in areas. If you had an easy time with it then good for you bro.
they used to be ghastly babies in the demo
based above average IQ video game enjoyer
desu I had to look up the piano one
just use the map anon
don't care
I will wait for the remake
It really doesn't make any difference. If someone is looking at a guide every other minute, I guess that's pretty gay, but it doesn't matter. They had strategy guides back in the day. Time isn't unlimited so if you're lost or stuck, what's the harm? Is it a "true gamer experience" to wander around needlessly for three extra hours because there was some drawer you forgot to press X on?
We had a couple of Fatal Frame threads last month. It's a great series, but sadly, the original trilogy isn’t on modern platforms, and kids nowadays seem to be either incapable or unwilling to learn how to emulate, so it’s hard to get new people into the series.
Also with how the town "called" them all there in SH2, that's clearly the demon luring in troubled people in order to feed off their negativity and grow more powerful by torturing them more. The demon also specifically tortures them in ways that mirror why they are here in the first place, in brutal mockery.
Eddie is called thinking it is a place to hide out from his shootings
Angela is called thinking it is the place her mother is at so she can kill her too after killing her dad and brother
James is called thinking that Mary is here and healthy after he had just smothered her the other day
Laura isn't lured by the demon though. She came to Silent Hill just because she misunderstood Mary telling her she was "going away" as her going on a long trip to Silent Hill.
It all fits with a demonic presence behind the scenes, but I guess nah it's about circumcision.
too japanese I guess. For some reason they scared much more of ghosts
Enjoy the turbo snow and other bugs.
It's my favorite, and it sucks that I'm called a contrarian because of it. I won't deny that there is some nostalgia influencing this, but I just love the cult angle, the oppressive atmosphere, and the character of Alessa Gillespie.
I want to play this game but i get scared easily. Tried playing it when i was 15 and got tense af while walking through the school hallways. When i got out to the central courtyard a loud song with heavy tempos started playing, so i ran across that section back to the school hallway and closed the game forever. It's been 20 years since then, the scariest games I ever played were the classic RE games
but now my wife wants to play it..................... how can i just man up and play this damn game??
Also with how the town "called" them all there in SH2, that's clearly the demon luring in troubled people in order to feed off their negativity and grow more powerful by torturing them more.
Definitely think that those that die there become part of the town forever. In 3 you have leonard and humanoid enemies that appear to be members of the Order. Reading between the lines, Claudia's plans amount to: we all die and become trapped in a nightmare world forever and there' no conflict or suffering because we're all silent hill monsters.
Claudia and Douglas more or less have a convo about this, where he's skeptical that anything good can come from this since all he sees is an abandoned rusted world covered with monsters. Claudia is just a delusional socialist turned satanist.
It reminds me of how Parasite Eve 2 had these insane transhumanist utopians who wanted to become immortal animals forever or some shit.
so you think all the visuals and monster design and setpieces are just completely random meaningless fluff huh?
>Angela is called thinking it is the place her mother is at so she can kill her too after killing her dad and brother
Nah, they all have ties to Silent Hill and for Angela it's where her mom lives. Angela is looking for a family member and to have redemption. She wants her mom to say it's okay and she's not a bad person since she's so guilt ridden. Without that she just runs off to suicide herself.
Eddie isn't shown to have a connection to SH like James, Mary, and Angela did, but he likely has one somewhere. He visited it at some point.
cults are a tedious overdone trope. the eckhartian angel angle from jacob's ladder is more interesting. the entity behind silent hill is a benevolent figure.
there's no demon, take the creation myth from SH3 at face value: it's a goddess who exists to purify the damned and deliver them from evil. the town is good.
That's because you consume american shit day in day out.
Over here in yurop SH's depiction of religion was very novel.
Over here in yurop SH's depiction of religion was very novel.
religion is... le ebil. yeah, very novel and thought-provoking, compared to heterodox german mysticism
rage baiter doesn't know the nightmare visuals come from a bullied child in immense pain
SH1/3 are deeper than you think nuSH2 tard
Map or not when you have to remember which specific room on which specific floor alternating between the two worlds its easy to get lost.
i know the lore of the franchise inside and out. sh1 is a masterpiece but ebil cults aren't interesting. the only interesting thing to come out of the order is their mythology.
Is the demon just going to summon himself into reality???
The cult needs to exist for the series to exist. There needs to be a real world group of people that are working to bring this demon's plans to fruition.
the cult corrupted the town, they mistook the evil the town reflected back at them as the town itself. the cult and its goals are perfectly compatible with my jacob's ladder head canon. it's why the enemies of sh1 are the most overtly demonic.
I wonder if they will remake the first game
>go to settings ant overclock virtual cpu to 2x speed
>cap game at 60
I've seen this mentioned now a couple of times. Can you really do this? Doesn't it break the game. Also when I overclock the cpu in duckstation it doesn't increase the fps it just makes the fps more stable with no drops.
Did the games even say they were evil or are you just regurgitating yahtzee?
What's that?
What is this?
Huh? Radio?
What's going on here?
What is it?
No dogs around here
Have you seen a little girl? Just turned 7 last month... Short, black hair... My daughter.
You never alternate between worlds, it's always the same pattern: real world location -> otherworld location -> roam around town to reach next location
And you switch only when the game makes you, you have no say in it so no need to remember what was going on in the last location
Rooms are marked and named on the map for anything interesting
Getting a bit lost while trying to figure out where to go and how to solve puzzles is normal, it's part of the game
But if you get lost to the point you can't get any bearing... I think the problem lies more in the person holding the controller than in the game itself...
brutalize a child so they can birth a demon god
PS2 has a texture smoothing option for PS1 games that you have to disable during start-up.
Bible.
i love it simply because it's a game about dad looking for his missing daughter, relatable for a lot of functioning man, unlike the story about horny dude who murdered his sick wife or the other one about teenage girl raped by her father. there isn't much games about NORMAL man, especially NORMAL father/daughter relations. capcom pulled it off and there was nobody to appreciate it because horror fags are mostly manchildren/trannies nowadays. ethan winters and harry mason are the best dads in video games
Well anon im glad can use your autism to navigate an obnoxiously designed world. If only you could use your skills to navigate some pussy.
obnoxiously designed world
You mean realistic locations that all have labeled maps given to you upon entry?
Only the last area is deliberately confusing and impossible to map out due to not obeying the laws of physics and reality.
Nice cope moron.
enter nightmare version of x area
oh no, what will I do, where will I go?
all doors locked and pathways closed except the one you're supposed to do
Did you just give up right away or what
They pussied out with SH1. Alessa is very clearly a victim of Satanic Ritual Abuse but they were too chickenshit to go the whole way and say a demon baby was raped into her. This isn't some far out extreme shit either, mainstream movies and even network TV shows had dealt with that kind of material for decades by that point.
The first game was ambiguous.
You watched lore videos that fed you your opinions.
Neither did your mom but I still fucked her
It makes no sense to literally rape a demon into her. The point isn't to have the demon possess a human fetus, the point is to have this demon feed off Alessa's pain and hatred until it is strong enough to birth itself into the material world.
Who the fuck would be shooting that load anyway?
le yahtzee, le lore videos, le american media
put a sock in it you fucking faggot
Didn't think my reply would hurt you that much lol
Normal people can read a simple map you know no need to be autist, especially when anything even remotely important for your progression is automatically marked in it
true
we dont think about it buy an ad, ziong xiuok
the point is to have this demon feed off Alessa's pain and hatred until it is strong enough to birth itself into the material world
headcanon
rust dimension was an oopsie and they went along to not lose their chance at paradise
Only retards think that preferring 1 is somehow contrarian. Something like praising SH4 as the best one is contrarian, liking 1 the best is pretty basic.
I think it's aged brilliantly
Zoomers are just retarded
Motor skills and mentally faculties of 70+ year old men and women.
look, just because you've got childhood trauma you didn't unpack with your psychiatrist, doesn't mean everything should be about rape
(((Kaufmann)))
I played it as a young adult in 2015 for the first time and it rekindled my waning love for videogames. I played the rest and i loved them all 1-4, but 1 is the best.
cool it with the antisemitism
youtube.com
When this played I was in love
To be fair 4 was by far the creepiest.
Bloober Team has a chance to redeem the gameplay. Just imagine the second half being not shit. Ghosts in the dark would be mental.
Is the OG PS2 version of Silent Hill 2 supposed to get microstutters every 10-30 seconds? PCSX2 v2.2.0.
Enabling VSync helped a little. Using OpenGL for the renderer. Googling gives me mixed results. Anyone have any experience with it stuttering?
use PCSX2 nightly channel, it's miles better than stable
dunno about the emulator but most consoles actually output something slightly less than or slight over 60hz so that a modern display can show duplicate frames sometimes as it tries to conform the image to a clean 60hz.
Thinking hes talking about the map
Youre pretty dense anon.
It achieves what later entries do in exponentially weaker hardware, the plot is intriguing without going too far into 2deep4you territory, and generally just triumphs at being creepy as shit with that brilliant sound design, art direction and disorienting gameplay decisions that constantly oull the rug under your feet.
It basically did everything right on its first attempt. 2 and 3 just have better graphics, but dont really fix the formula in any way. They just keep the high bar at its place in whats important.
There's an X Files episode that's kind of like Silent Hill called Die Hand Die Verletzt. It's about a Satanic cult that runs a small town. A teenage girl says the cult used her as a breeder and sacrificed 3 or 4 of her babies. The Devil shows up in the form of a substitute teacher and kills a bunch of people too. Even Mulder has to pause his fedora tipping for a minute to admit something really fucked up is going on.
KYS
2.0 is new stable, updated two months ago
gpu pic related? i guess its normal
holy true
Wait, is that the actual intended use for the hop? I never used it.
No it isn't.
This being a sticking point for people shows just how few people on Anon Babble ever actually played SH1. Most enemies you fight (as in every enemy outside the school because the school is the only place with this enemy type) are too fast for the hop back, and most environments encourage completely different ways of circumventing enemies.
It's just a bit of detail for if the player holds sprint + back, similar to Harry clamoring onto walls and doors if you run at them.
I played 2 on the 'eck and no microstuttering happened. There was a new stable released on halloween btw.
Scary as shit nigga
Ah, some good-ass music to get pumped for the day

I'm playing Silent Hill for the very first time, I play it on CRT and PS2 RGB! I am loving it!! Much better than Resident Evil is my experience! I just beat the lizard vagina boss
nice
there's no demon, take the creation myth from SH3 at face value: it's a goddess who exists to purify the damned and deliver them from evil. the town is good.
Why should we take literal Satanists at face value? Demons lie. Satanists lie. they are clearly delusional. The "evil" is probably life itself, where you can be hurt, and suffer. They deliver and purify you to turn you into an otherworld nightmare creature.
It's a bunch of Christians coming into contact with some weird demonic religion and then reinterpreting evyerhting through that lens. That's why their goddess looks like Renaissance art of saints, when the "Goddess" is really some goat headed thing with titties.
If this thing ever was properly born it would start eating up the fucking world turning evyerhting into the nightmare realm. That's their "salvation".
Seems to be working thus far. Thank you!
I'll take note of that for if it keeps persisting.
similar to Harry clamoring onto walls and doors if you run at them.
That happens in SH2 on Hard as well. A lot of Sh2's hidden features on Hard should have been there for normal. You also bonk your weapons off of hard surfaces and walls on hard. Demon's Souls did the same thingg like 9 years later.
It's just God.
It's what the cult sees as God.
They invented it and brought it into the world using the spirit power. There is nothing to imply this shit about "demon hitched onto christianity", it is literally just an invention of the cult made manifest through their actions.
If they believed in any other God, or any other religion settled there, it'd be the same thing, which is why the God of SH appears as 3 completely different things the three times it is brought into the world.
This cover has 5 characters in it.
Dahlia - top right
Harry - middle
Cybil - bottom right
Alessa - bottom left
Cheryl - also bottom left
But arent your fantasies always about the wife conveniently dead and your kid being always a daughter? Why not a son? Or a cool full family kino? It really smells like some pedo trying to groom the daughter
You also bonk your weapons off of hard surfaces and walls on hard. Demon's Souls did the same thingg like 9 years later.
RE had been doing that since 2.
CV made it a big part of its knife balance, but REmake dropped it so they could make the knife completely useless dogshit (Mikami should never be a game designer outside of his meme projects, jesus christ).
i prefer the more thematically interesting interpretation. ebil cults worshipping ebil demons is played out. silent hill is at its most interesting when it's some inscrutable metaphysical reality intersecting with ours. it's the christian orthodox heaven: its fire burns sinners, but warms the righteous
take the creation myth from SH3 at face value
Ah, yes. The lore made for the official fanfiction sequel made without the original creator's involvement.
This, that shit is OVERDONE now, I hated it in tew2 too
"I'm being summoned..."
I love Silent Hill main themes, I want to suck Akira Yamaoka's penis
They went through all this trouble to summon a "god" that got its brains blown out with a shotgun by Joe Averageman.
Common Satanist L
I would like a cozy Silent Hill from the view of an innocent child whose greatest fear would be cooties or some shit.
don't care, an angel at the heart of a rust dimension is infinitely more interesting than le demon.
I used nightly btw
arent your fantasies always
lots of projections here. got raped by your dad as a kid or something? now that's american kino
try vulkan renderer, opengl is old and busted
yes and fuck yes
t. rented it from the video store
Why do you think the "qanon fight against the pedo cabal" started in Anon Babble of all places?
Because when you hate someone you see aspects you hate about yourself in them, and you're trying to make them a scapegoat.
If bill gates turned out to be a pedo, he'd be the perfect scapegoat, for example.
Did he not have a melee weapon? I haven't played it since release but I think I only used bullets on the flying creatures at least in the beginning.
It wasn't good in the first place. It's Resident Evil's underachieving little brother.
you are RE's underachieving little brother
Name me a modern action-adventure that has a campaign as long, as diverse, with as many enimes, and new set pieces?
Uh, Elden Ring? Pikmin 4? Control, Alan Wake 2, Zelda?
For me it's Elle theme ending
Anyone remember the bloopers?
youtube.com
In retrospective I can't believe how brilliant this game is. It's them going like "it's just a game, buddy".
no christoff gans grey children kill you in a dream in the opening then you wake up to ring of fire and cybil choking on your radio
That's technically Dino Crisis thoughbeit
I thought it aged great after playing it back in October. It looks good, it has a surprising amount of control despite its clunkiness (quick turn, strafe, strafe running, etc).
The boss fights are the only part I think are complete shit, but they usually are in these games.
Yes, and they are the true reveal of the story and about how the events were just a bunch of friends messing around a set. They are shown after every ending after all.
It aged just fine.
I enjoyed playing it last month in the dark on a CRT.
I'm a zoomer who played it for the first time last month and it aged pretty well for me all things considered.
I like it more than SH2 and it was about on par with SH3, maybe a bit better.
I would say my least favorite thing about SH1 is how often it will lock you out of stuff if you accidentally progress a little too much.
Like if you happen to activate the Otherworld in the hospital before grabbing the map, the game is basically just like fuck off do it without the map.
If you don't happen to notice the rifle tucked away in the corner of the boss arena in the mall, you'll be missing one weapon for the rest of the game, in a game where you only get 2 guns.
The requirement to get Good Ending is a bit too obtuse for me. It's not hard once you know what to do, but why make it so easy for the player to get such an unsatisfying ending?
Other than that though, I really love the atmosphere of SH1 more than any other horror game I've played. For exactly the reason here: The environments are detailed enough, and the lighting especially good in the dark, that my mind can't help but register it at strangely realistic as it effortlessly fills in the blanks.
The sequels don't quite capture that for me.
For the zoom-zooms around here, you have to understand that a great part of the hype behind these games was that they existed before the Internet. So, data mining, let's plays, etc. weren't really a thing except in ultra-niche usenet posts. So then imagine your surprise when someone at school would come up "yeah, man, did you know there's a secret UFO ending?" and you had to go and muck around until you got it with nothing but hearsay and, if you're lucky, a fucking .txt printout from gamefaqs, and then once you saw it, it'd all feel as if it was a big fucking shitpost (which it was).
That sense of discovery and mystery is lost to time nowadays. You can't have anything secret in the always-online, ultrafast internet World.
you literally only get the same cutscene you'd normally get, but with Cybill painted on it. What's the point?
Compare it to something like Alone in the Dark (the original). Also a horror game, however the game's loop literally involves you dying over and over while needing to save-state to progress, because most threats catch you off-guard without warning.
Most zoomers, or at this point, gen alpha is joining us as underage (14-years-old is just about the right time for them to hop in and give their uneducated opinion) haven't played many actual old and obtuse games, they just know old games have a reputation for being clunky and obtuse so they throw that criticism onto any old game they play, without putting much thought into the fact that they're actually playing some of the exceptions.
Signalis
Been an SH fag long before Anon Babble came to be, and let me tell ya: already on both SHFs that existed, 1 and 2 shared the #1 position as the best game in the series. It has the all around best gameplay and mood.
how can i just man up and play this damn game??
You just man up and play the game.
I was 11 when I first played it. Yeah, it terrified me. I had to take breaks every ~30 mins or so just to calm my nerves.
But I beat it. And replayed it vigorously afterwards.
All that shit was in the magazines you'd take off the rack and read for free while your mom was buying tendies for dinner.
The same reason as the play -- to get items.
In a survival horror game that's already shown you the world is dangerous, you're inspecting anything and everything for weapons, ammo, healing items, and key items.
I hate conditional searches like that.
For me it was being a kid and barely knowing any english. I got stuck with the piano puzzle for hours after translating the text with a dictionary. Good times.
I miss developer commentary bonus content
I miss debug rooms
I miss cheat code menus
I miss attract modes
(seriously, I think it's way cool when you idle on the title screen for a while and the game starts to show gameplay)
Yes, the SH 1 cover is full "floating heads" nonsense. The JP covers are more evokative.
How many endings each game has
It has 2 good endings, 2 bad endings, and 1 joke ending.
The regular good ending is the only one you should concern yourself with, and someone already pointed out what NOT to do to not screw yourself out of it.
The good+ ending CAN be gotten on your first playthrough, but It's not something you'll figure out on your first playthrough because it kind of requires knowledge that you'd have from a second playthrough, so I consider it not worth getting unless you replay, especially as It's not canon.
The two bad endings just require you not doing that side quest the other guy points out.
The joke ending is only possible on a second playthrough.
Horror adventure
when you idle on the title screen for a while and the game starts to show gameplay
Why do devs ever do that? Was it so they could attract people putting the game on display on the background of Blockbuster or something?
Also with how the town "called" them all there in SH2, that's clearly the demon luring in troubled people in order to feed off their negativity and grow more powerful by torturing them more.
No. Fuck no.
They all got to the town on their own. By pure accident at that. The town in SH2 does not "torture" them, hell two of the characters are literally LIVING THE BEST DAYS OF THEIR LIFE while there.
The town has no consciousness. It has no motive. It's just a "projector", that automatically projects whats inside the people into our world.
Reading between the lines, Claudia's plans amount to: we all die and become trapped in a nightmare world forever and there' no conflict or suffering because we're all silent hill monsters.
Fuck no, part two. Is this what the DEmake has caused to the fanbase?
Claudia was literally taught by THE Dahlia herself, who tried to birth a living, breathing CHRISTIAN GOD, that would then purge the world by kickstarting THE Apocalypse.
Alessa had the power to manifest such thing into reality, but the whole stuff terrified and traumatized the young girl so much, it became a literal demon.
Eddies connection is literally the fact that Laura wanted to hitchhike a ride there. That's it.
Angela is literally on a killing spree, looking to off her entire family. It's a family-murder-suicide, coated in revenge, a very common trope in Japanese culture.
Attract modes are from the Arcade era, it should be self explanatory as to why they exist.
Fuck you. Cybil is alive and well. He is currently tracking agent Dale Cooper.
*she
these games used to be displayed in public stores, when they were paired with CRTs it doubled as a way to prevent burn-in
Silent Hill 1 has an attract mode.
you'll be missing one weapon for the rest of the game, in a game where you only get 2 guns.
Three guns.
Also you can miss a shitton of melee weapons. It still shocks me how many people don't even know about the Axe (no, not the Hammer).
I always thought 3 had the best horror. The sound design really pulls 4 down for me.
If you think it aged poorly, you probably think that about every PS1 game.
Exactly.
Silent Hill 1 is one of the better aging games of this era to me. I will say RE3 has much more responsive tank controls, but that's also the third game in that franchise and came out a year after SH1, anyway, so they had plenty of time to iterate on the controls. And also a necessity since that game is way more fast paced.
How do the Jp covers of the others look
Pretty much this,
but it seems that things are getting even worse: if a game does not play like your typical PS4-5 era over-shoulder action game with lock-on and dodges, maybe with crouch-2-stealh mechanics and upgrade trees, it's instantly "obsolete" to many young zooms and Alpha kids. Simply because ALL their modern slop plays and even looks the same, so the notion of a game actually demanding mastery of the basics and NOT being about effortlessly killing everything confuses them.
Another issue is the nowadays typical ironic consumption of any media, as in turning everything into a joke. I've seen too many streamers play the SH2 demake and just crack jokes at everything, slaughter stuff while making yo momma jokes, never even bothering to stop and think the story and themes of the game they're playing.
Afraid Of Monsters: Director's Cut
Cry Of Fear
Tormented Souls
Hollow Body
That's what you play it for though, It's supposed to scare you and be unnerving.
SH1 is the only one of the games to give me that feeling so far of constant feeling on edge and unnerved, I wish I could get that feeling back.
or the other one about teenage girl raped by her father
Huh? Are you just talking about Angela in SH2?
but It's not something you'll figure out on your first playthrough because it kind of requires knowledge that you'd have from a second playthrough
Many people got it on a first playthrough without a guide though. You just have to get the bottle with the liquid and want to avoid killing Cybil and trying to use items for that.
especially as It's not canon
Toyama disagrees with you.
I like the authentic visuals that people experienced on release
Including the 13" CRT and RF modulator connection? If not, you're not getting the authentic experience most people had.
Anything RE7-8 is utter trash. Don't speak that shit in the same sentence with the SH1.
I'd let Lisa drag me down to hell with her.
RE7 is infinitely the scarier game
scarier than onions hill 1
zoomer detected
reddit spacing
opinion discarded
's a bunch of Christians coming into contact with some weird demonic religion and then reinterpreting evyerhting through that lens
Isn't there a text entry in SH3 that basically says this?
That whatever the natives in the area worshipped was basically warped by the settlers who came to the area in Colonial America into what we see today, losing a lot of what was originally there?
My only question is, where were all these cultists in the original Silent Hill?
They all seem to know of and hate Harry's guts come time for Silent Hill 3, but why did none of them do shit to him in Silent Hill 1 but just remained hiding or whatever?
Because the moment they tried to do shit he completely obliterated them.
caring about the story in silent hill 3 is a mistake
you're correct
(but i wish i was a sh3fag)
Kill yourself
Thanks for making it clearer. I think I will do Regular Good Ending > Good+ > whichever Bad ending I get first > other Bad ending > Joke ending.
Toyama disagrees with you.
Even he says right there, Silent Hill 3 was written with the good ending being canon.
Toyama can disagree if he likes, as it stands, good ending is the only canonical ending until someone makes a sequel that canonizes Good+ either as a separate timeline or explaining why Cybil is absent in 3.
Many people got it on a first playthrough without a guide though.
blatantly lying at this point
agp kino
And then if you disagree with them that old games are "unplayable" they immediately turn to calling you a gatekeeper.
I wouldn't take streamers too seriously though. That's the nature of streaming, It's not indicative of how everyone plays games.
Even on Justin.TV it was kind of like this, but the idea isn't that you're watching a friend play a game, you're watching a so-called "entertainer" play a game, so that means they're going to yap incessantly through everything, and try to make jokes about everything, because you can't have any dead air.
That's the only way they can make money, because livestreamers, now more than ever, look at it like a job and they have to constantly entertain the peanut gallery.
And that's what's naturally selected as the most popular stuff, so that's the stuff you're likely to see.
You can find some exceptions, usually OG internet guys like Zophar I'll watch, but most younger streamers are in it for the cash and not the vibes.
Silent Hill 3 isn't canon.
blatantly lying at this point
t. retard who can't think for himself
You just have to get the bottle with the liquid and want to avoid killing Cybil and trying to use items for that.
That's what I mean though, it takes a lot of guesses to get the Good+ ending on your first playthrough.
You first have to get the bottle and then correctly guess that you can bottle up the red liquid in the hospital. Don't you dare accidentally progress too far and get into the otherworld, because that will lock you out of it immediately.
Then you have to just hold that in your inventory until near the end of the game, and then guess to use it, but ONLY in Cybil's second phase as I recall, so you can't even use it initially.
If I'm already having to shoot the shit out of Cybil, I'm going to assume I have to just keep going until she's dead, not pause towards the end of the fight and then use something I can't even know I'm supposed to use, because I won't have seen it used like this unless I already beat the regular Good ending.
That's a lot of guesses in a row.
Technically you CAN guess your way into the good+ ending, but It's clearly intended to be gotten after you've seen Kauffman use the liquid on Alessa in the Good ending.
Yeah amazing fucking game retard.
That's a strange monster dog so I don't really blame him like imagine if you saw that you'd probably think "HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT" instead of "dog" it'd take you like 2 or 3 seconds to realize it's a dog if it's not mauling you.
He hasn't played the game so he just uses a funny meme image that's not even meant to be a criticism of the game
Hospital for me.
Whereas for the Hospital, that sudden realization after thinking I missed something, and seeing that 4th floor button really instills a little bit of dread. You know whats coming next.
What are the zombie dogs supposed to symbolize?
but It's clearly intended to be gotten after you've seen Kauffman use the liquid on Alessa in the Good ending
Tbf, in-universe it still makes sense as Harry would try everything he could before to save Cybil before having to kill her.
The play novel also does give a plausible reasoning for him throwing her the liquid.
the old saying, doggy dog
"we want the Resident Evil audience"
Ok. What dot he Pterodactyls symbolize?
That was a mistranslation. In japanese he said:
"Probably a dog house, I guess. I can not find anything of particular concern about it".
It's an amazing game.
More playing and less memes.
More playing
This shit is unplayable
So.. is this the silent hill 2 haters club or something? You really think 1 is better?
flashlight? Always off
It's unplayable because I'm too bad to play it
Is not the own you think it is.
How the fuck do you die in the school before you even get to the otherworld? That's impressively bad.
Why did 2 get remade but this didn’t
Because 2 is a cult classic, while the original is mostly forgotten.
How the fuck do you die in the school before you even get to the otherworld? That's impressively bad.
so? not an argument
agreed. I love this game. Aged just fine. OP just sucks.
You didn't actually play the game, you don't have to pretend you know what I'm talking about.
You saved that webm from someone else who is impressively bad at the game.
People made video essays on the 2nd one.
I'm kind of glad though, because I feel Silent Hill 1 really does not need a remake AT ALL. Not to say SH2 did, either, but SH1 has less room for improvement and benefits more from the constraints it was designed with in mind.
you're trash. i said re8 was one of a few games with a dad main character, don't really care if you like the game or not
I just replayed these games and so far I think 1 still has the creepier atmosphere.
I swear if you pause the game in 1 it will whisper to you, and many of the segments in 1 are far more creepy.
The maze in 1 is also 10x more confusing then any other games "maze" segments.
I honestly like 2 more in terms of story, but find 1 to just flat out be a better title then 2.
3 I have to replay soon though, it's been like 10 years since I last played it and I can't remember almost anything.
Remember most of 4 though.
First game is just a straight horror flick. 2 has become idolized as some artsy fartsy deep game.
No,it's mine
I'm playing it for the first time and all I can say (so far) is that melee is pure garbage
Silent Hill would have benefitted from some nasty death scenes. Those little bastards should have viciously stabbed his fallen body for a few seconds as the screen fades out.
This game is too scary :(
That means it hasn't aged well :)
Diis here
can't pipe a grey child
skill issue
So not only are you a LARPer who hasn't played the game, but you're also a newfag who doesn't know we can tell when you saved your image.
That image was saved early Sunday October 20th.
Faggot.
I just remember a rumor that the Columbine kids played this game and that made it extra feel edgy. Someone also said one of the music tracks was a church hymn played backwards but I'm pretty sure both were bullshit.
2 is a good game weighed down heavily by the praise of low iq normies and the retards who took over the franchise after the original team, making it the absolute worst of the original four
i heard it was doom because you can't prepare a school shooting for less than 2 months which they had between the game release and the shooting
I told you
I'm playing it for the first time and the webm is mine
I made that webm for this thread
2 is good but it's actually bad because of people on the internet I don't like
What kind of evil fiend runs its nightmare world on wind power?
I'd kill for a Silent Hill Remake with gameplay and graphics from SH3
Yeah it has you’re just a reatrded zoomer faggot.
played it for the first time last month and i loved it, i thought it would be harder than resident evil but it was actually easier. i got all the endings and tried to get 10 stars but 9 stars were the best i could get
also i think you are a faggot, the game is fine and it would only get ruined by the cancer that is modern gaming
i fucking love the soundtrack
Would playing this on the myioo mini plus be a disservice to the game? Like should I actually play it on a tv instead?
easy mode????? nigger even on hard this game manages to be super easy(not that thats a bad thing btw)
guide
jesus you must fucking suck at videogames, did you mom drop you on your head as a baby?
this breaks the cut scenes actually. they play in fast speed
NOOO YOU NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY THE PIANO
fuck off retard boomer
it depends on the game. with silent hill it breaks the cut scenes so dont do it.
if you love industrial music (like i do) you are gonna love the ost of this game (which i did)
im a fucking zoomer though. nigger you dont have to learn to play the piano, the riddle gives you hints about silent birds or some shit like that, there are some piano keys that dont work, if you connect the dots and you werent deprived of oxygen at birth you will realize that the riddle is talking about the broken keys. you will also notice that it talks about white and black birds, black and white piano keys get it????
seriously you have to be a fucking retard to not get this
Playing any sort of atmospheric game with a tiny screen and puny audio playback devices would be a huge disservice IMO.
At least use good headphones and play in the dark if that's all you got.
not that anon but i realized that i made a mistake not using headphones when i played this game
? it's aged just fine
somehow has better combat than SH2 too, strangely enough
You heard about Ror on Anon Babble a few years ago and its your identity to be unique about le obscure horror game? Like siren fans that unironically like a game that literally its so dogshit that you can ignore entire setpieces on their level design and beat the missions without any effort?
playing without sticks kinda ass. and you need to overclock emulation to something around 130% to avoid 15 fps dips in some areas
headphones ain't necessary if you got a good audio system. OG SH2 actually packed some curious design that made the stereo speakers on old CRTs provide a near-surround sound like experience at best. But with the modern flat screens and mobile devices? That's all gone for sure.
only really noticed the framerate dipping at the amusement park area and it was before the boss fight during the fight its fine.
maybe i just didnt noticed in other parts of the game because the controls never got unresponsive
psychological horror is a real genre, however only SH2 actually meets the requirements of being that in this series.
Wrong.
The "psychological horror" was already coined for the SH1 back in the day, and it does NOT refer to "psychological themes" in the game, but the way it scares the PLAYER using "psychological" tricks (disturbing imagery, creepy audio, fear of unknown resulted by the limited visibility via fog and darkness.
But of course after SH2 and double so after YT eceleb era started, people started correlating the term with "OMG it's a shrink town! Inner demons and shit!!".
Which is extra ironic, since SH1 literally, no joke, tackles such themes.
i loved the first game so much, im taking a little break from silent hill because i beat it 6 times in a row (to get all the endings) but next month maybe i'll start silent hill 2, luckily all 4 silent hill games are on pc
playing without sticks kinda ass.
The game is best played on D-Pad, little chubbie. Just like all RE and SH games.
Also the performance is generally perfectly fine in most areas.
Attaboy.
mostly sh1 runs on around 25 with minor dips here and there, 15 fps dips are right before you climb the ladder down to sewers
if you overclock in silent hill it fucks up the cut scenes and makes them play too fast
I think you're a fag, and that it's the best game in the series.
I kneel
3 contains so much sexual imagery that its clearly supposed to be the implication. They don't need a character to to show up and tell you that they raped a child, that's just tasteless and gauche.
ok I downloaded duckstation to play this. what settings do I change?
the number 9 is important in SH2 so you get 9 varieties of enemies, and 1 of them is Maria.
I can easily imagine that unless you grew up with these games it's near impossible to play them in current day. to me the game holds up just fine because I know exactly what it is and what it will offer, one of the few benefits of being an old fuck I suppose.
Would've been good without the dimension crap. Just keep it a regular ghost town the whole time. Maybe make it night time half-way through if you want to crank up the spookiness.
I might be misremembering, but I think the change was because of content rating boards.
idk, beetle core seems to work fine, just tested 200%. maybe it's true for duckstation?
People started referring to it be the definition that applies in literally every other medium instead of the marketing gimmick definition. Creepy sounds and disturbing imagery? That's in every fucking horror game.
good taste.
I never quite got the red square or the 9 symbolism
For vanilla experience? Nothing.
If you want more ""HD"", pic related gets you going. Leave the dithering ON, it's part of the visual style.
Here's the Pastebin:

I can easily imagine that unless you grew up with these games it's near impossible to play them in current day.
Not true at all.
My wife only gave them a spin after we started dating, circa 15 years ago, and she's a massive fan now.
I've also made new friends watching total noobs play through the OG SH and RE trilogies for the very first time during and after the Corona days.
tl;dr: The only requirement for enjoying old school survival horror is patience to learn new stuff, and love towards good video games.
Wrong. And it's not "dimensions".
And it's not "dimensions"
was it alessa's nightmares just breaking reality to murder people or something? i still don't get it
its ugly
Alyssa had a fear of animals and read Lost World IIRC.
I can easily imagine that unless you grew up with these games it's near impossible to play them in current day.
Not true at all. My wife only gave them a spin after we started dating, circa 15 years ago.
current day isn't 15 fucking years ago retard
Havent played it in probably 20+ years
so i vaguely even remember it
should get a remake though
kys sexhaver
you need to be fed through a wood chipper feet first you waste of skin
every indie horror game from the pat 20 years is still trying to be just like Silent hill 1. to say this game didn't age well is laughable
"I'll die until the die I die"
deep
I never beat this game, but I tried it out for the first time in 2016
The fucking intro where the camera angles snap back and forth while your run through the alleyways has always stuck in my mind as an amazing section of horror and I'll always appreciate this game for that
I had to make sure it was posted even though I never played these games and prolly never will. I respect the autism.
that's not funny
The Otherside is the most appealing part of SH for me
anon are you fucking kidding me they are a satanic cult that do drug trafficking for extra evil, the fact that the nightmare town is created by Alessa's trauma from the suffering the cult inflicted on her should kinda clue you in
STAB
hehe, nothin personnel... kid...
STAB 2
it's a square because mirrors are squares
it's red because red equals violence and James is a man in denial of his own violence
there's 9 of them because of the 9 torments he materializes. The 8 enemy types + Maria. This was confirmed by Tsuboyama on xitter not that long ago.
The "creature" spawned within her kept corrupting the world around her, feeding on her pain and nightmares, using them as a lens of sorts.
Once she was united with her other half, her powers were restored and essentially started engulfing the whole world.
Alessa tried to stop this by first separating the town from the rest of the world, followed by closing the worst corruptions into tiny reality bubbles of sort, utilizing the Seal Of Metatron. You'll notice that all the main locations are places where she had the strongest memories / mental connections to, like the school and the hospital.
Sadly, Harry was essentially tricked into stopping Alessa, allowing the corruption to spread, resulting the "Nowhere", which itself is like a prologue to the apocalypse itself
tl;dr: It's essentially the same phenomena as in SH2, just in a much larger and stronger scale, with one massive alpha projection happening rather than multiple smaller ones.
be a junkie slut fucking your boss
help his fucked up cult buddies torture a little girl for your fix
get sentenced to eternity in superhell
lmao @ lisa
