Video games as art

Can a video game be GOOD without being FUN?

Yes
See: Silent Hill 2
If you think I'm baiting don't make me pull out the video

Video games can never be taken seriously by professional entertainers in Hollywood. We are all doomed!

No, in the same way that a board game with compelling lore wouldn’t win game of the year, a video game needs to be fun before anything else matters. That’s why games like Schedule I get big because people will spend more time on a simple fun game than a boring movie game narrative.

it's a good game ffs
why do retarded youtubers keep crying about it being hard, it's not fucking hard at all, just play it

it's not HARD

it's UNPLEASANT. Tedious, boring, annoying, and the game actively hates you.

it's not, have you even played it yourself you absolute adhd monkey

You can apply this to pretty much a lot of survival horrors then, they intentionally make you uncomfortable

Pathologic IS fun, though. The eternal westerner would just rather consume endless jarpig slop and assorted Nintendo crap instead.

yes

also I have severe ADHD

well it's not the game's fault that you do
i enjoyed the shit out of this game, even just walking the fields as burakh searching for herbs or healing infected as clara, there's always something for you to do and somewhere to be and it's only like two weeks for each character
seen tons of these "pathologic hates you" videos, it has great music and design, tf else do people want i just don't get it

yeah it just bums me out that many people would watch some half assed analysis instead of just playing it, it's genuinely a fucking great game

Yes. Very little horror is fun, and even less is intentionally fun.

Nta. But I stopped playing when I realized all the walking was intentional and not a result of me being lost.

Before You Buy looking ass pose

They are called video GAMES. If it's not fun to play, why even make a game? Why not just make a movie?

Well. Maybe FUN is just a word we like to use as synomous with good when it's things we're doing, rather than watching/reading/listen to.
I think we do the same with music and "beautiful", like it's not allowed to be ugly like a book or movie can, so if we like a dark and abrasive piece we still feel the need to call it beautiful if we enjoy it. Like >If a game isn't allowed to evoke the same things a horror movie or book can, why even have a genre that calls itself horror in gaming?

Gameplay comes first. It doesn't matter if you have a rich, deep plot with complex, three-dimensional characters and graphics so good they make Leonardo da Vinci look like a toddler using finger paints if the gameplay is less pleasurable than wiping your ass with steel wool. If you don't care about gameplay then fuck off and watch a goddamn movie.

if the gameplay is less pleasurable than wiping your ass with steel wool.

Well, you switched the words now. Any piece of any media that we like we find supposedly find pleasurable in some way.
Gameplay or interaction isn't the same as "fun"
Even sports aren't "fun" like a "fun" movie is fun, so the same goes for a lot of multiplayer games that are almost nothing but gameplay.

A lot of creatures use this to make excuse that is neither fun nor good (because they just wanted to make a movie). But by using the word "fun" to mean something entirely different than any other context, we're kinda making it easier for them to do that, than if the word we did use for good games was something like "good", "enjoyable" or "gripping" instead.

creatures

*creators

and an ass-load of other weird spelling and extra-words

Someone just made a thread about Drakengard, so I came back to post that.

Gameplay is supposed to be fun. Games are supposed to be fun. Anyone who says otherwise is just butthurt that they can't hack it in Hollywood.

Pathologic IS fun

TRVTH
NVKE

the game actively hates you

Even if that was true, that only adds to the experience and makes things more enjoyable. It's a rare horror series where the survival aspect comes into real play beyond basic health and ammo management.

Ok. I assume you just use the word fun to mean the same thing I would by saying it's good then, rather than that you think a game is a failure if you're not smiling or laughing through it.

a good analysis is enjoyable on its own as a separate thing from the thing being analyzed

I like the plinkett reviews of star wars

it's not

According to Dybowski himself, he did design and tune lot of mechanics to be tedious and boring, since according to him suffering = art.

I find Pathologic to be bretty cool, but Dybowski is a fucking retard who can't into vidya. His true talent is that his dick points him towards peak Russian student arthoe pussy and allows him to assemble harems of those, and then those build kino vidya for him in spite of his retardation.

no but Pathologic was extremely fun as a day-to-day survival game
yes it was difficult, and you felt dread feeling like you're not going to make it, but that's the fun part of it
saying Pathologic is not fun because you feel dread, is like saying horror is not fun because you it's spooky
I'd rather play Pathologic any day than play shitty remote-island survival slop like Rust

his dick points him towards peak Russian student arthoe pussy and allows him to assemble harems of those, and then those build kino vidya for him

Real Ice-Pick Lodge lore btw

Nice-Dick Lodge

In a video game, fun is a logical consequence of good gameplay. Again, it doesn't matter if your game has a great story or great graphics if the gameplay sucks ass. A story would have to be really, really fucking good to make the shit gameplay worth putting up with, and if you're going to put so much focus on the story at the expense of gameplay, again, why even make a video game? Why should someone tell a story through a medium that they clearly resent? Because they couldn't make it in a medium they respect more, that's why.

Why do you keep talking about things other than gameplay?

Because I understand that a game does need to have those other elements, I just don't think they should be at the expense of gameplay. Games would be boring as fuck if it was just grey blocks bumping into each other against a grey background, but hey, look how successful Pong was.

Ok. So are you against all horror games entirely (unless it's like Raimi-style), because those elements clearly aren't aiming for fun in those, or do you just categorize it as an other type of fun? Because if it's the latter, I think that difference in wording is our only separation on the subject.

Remake was too long for such an unfun game. I can appreciate the tension, but I don’t want to live in it for a month

Pathologic is great so I don't know why you've linked it to this question but no, video games cannot be good without being fun.
That's like saying a toy that isn't fun is good. It can be intricately engineered and made out of amazing materials, but if it's not fun then why bother?

Nobody has ever been able to refute this when I've posed it to them.
