Square Enix gives up... it's over.
Square Enix gives up... it's over
Square enix gave up somewhere between final fantasy 10 and 12. Everything after that is just a sad death-rattle.
They should hire some of the talent that made E33 if they know what's good for them
Wasn't Sadnfall Interactive, the guys who made E33, created pretty exclusively to get away from large-corpo meddling?
This. I can kinda admit I liked 12, but even that one felt like something was "off".
isn't standing next to the popular kid kinda a normal marketing tactic?
Hopefully microsoft is paying attention too.
Would love to finally get that Lost Odyssey remaster/port.
Fucking hell, me too. I've played it on Xbox 360 and on Xenia but a full and official 4k ports with uncapped framelimit? I'd pay good money for that.
As it turns out devs aren't retards who try to create gay ass wars between games.
This is some strong cuck energy right here
this, shit screams of dick sucking
I don't think those guys would be interested in working for Cuck Enix.
square ebix has completely cucked out of the video game race... after the utter flops FFXV, FFXVI and rebirth there can be no coming back
Yeah, your brain. FF12 is the best FF.
Literally only casuals hate FF12.
The matsuno god kino filtered millions.
Not even delusional.
Filtered the entire fucking brand.
Square Enix should make a turn-based Final Fantasy spin-off with the plot of a 90s Saturday Morning cartoon.
I'd play that.
It's all been off since 10, even if it was still kino and enjoyable. Last real FF was IX.
Sephiroth if he Texan
I still stand by 12 being an okay game. It was 12 that made me realize that they were shifting perspective though. The Squaresoft of old was thoroughly dead and I never liked this new direction.
suit here. we won't allow it. not enough roi unfortunately.
p-please remember our game too!
Pathetic coattail riding by square.
No no, I enjoyed XII too, even if it got obviously fucked halfway through development. Just saving IX for last and finally playing it last year really drove it in for me that the franchise did have a clear identity at one point that was lost and never regained from X onwards.
Obviously there are levels of degeneration and a different identity doesn't make a game bad in itself, but even X and XII already were very different from what you had up to the PS1. Of course, XV and beyond have taken this into "oh shit nigger what are you doing" territory, but still.
12 still had soul. It was 13 where they started trying to Hollywoodize it
Good post. I agree with you. You can kinda see the development of the identity all the way up to 9/10 and then everyone goes fucking insane around the time 12 is being made, and then 13 and beyond is just utter garbage.
True, those who couldn't smell the smoke by 12 could see the fire by 13.
recent new job is pictomancer
heh
between final fantasy 10 and 12
Felt the same to me.
MMORPGs, i.e. FF11, were a mistake.
You people don't seem to "blame" 11 much for FF's downfall. Despite that being by far the most radical shift in playstyle and priorities. Why is that?
BUCK
BROKEN
Because 11 and 12 have nothing in common other than a quasi-shared setting.
When 11 came out, I for one, just thought it was a strange outlier and we'd be back to good Final Fantasy games after it was out.
Little did I know we were NEVER going back to the good times.
The thing is: Past X(-2) I associate practically no characters with FF (save for Lightning).
FF1 through X-2 all had strong characters, that stuck with you.
What has FF had since then? Effectively nothing.
Balthier (and Fran), Noctus and Clive are memorable, they're just not in great games.
sure feels like it.
not even just in hindsight, but at the time back then, too.
absolutely. i don't think it even made ANY cultural impact, either. nobody knows the names of the protagonists, of the villain, and can't tell you the plot.
"devs aren't retards"
uh huh.
I can't think of a single thing about Clive that made him stand out. Noctis was an edgy emo cunt, but beyond visuals and having a worse version of Squall's personality he's not memorable either.
They're congratulating them because they are going to absorb them
Square Enix can't stop winning
XII screams of some sort of weird internal reboot or rewrite or heavy meddling with whatever the original vision was. Vaan, the "protagonist", practically has no personality and arguably doesn't even have a real stake in the story. I have heard some cope about how he's the princesses moral compass or her link to her people or whatever, but that feels like something fans have projected on TO the character in retrospect.
The biggest problem of Square-Enix about Final Fantasy is that SE still pretends that Final Fantasy needs to appeal to perceived sensibilities of current 14-24 year olds, while in reality only 30+ year old nostalgiafags give a single fuck about Final Fantasy as an IP anymore.
nobody knows the names of the protagonists, of the villain
Vaan, Basch, Fran, Penelo, Balthier, Ashe
Gabranth, Cid, Vayne
Maximum devil's advocate, and I hate Square Enix like I hate the plague, but in their defense, they kinda HAVE to try to reach a new audience. Everyone assumed in the 80s/90s that those now-30-somethings would have kids and houses and careers by now and wouldn't be interested in Final Fantasy. Before that happened they HAD to find a new audience.
Only in hindsight can it be said that they could have had the 30+ audience on lock all that time.
It was off because most of it was entirely forgettable. The characters were bland, the plot was boring, the gameplay was underwhelming, even the music was average. The game wasn't really worth a playthrough until Zodiac Age. I got this game for Christmas and for the first time playing any game in the series I popped that fucker out and played Shadow of the Colossus after an hour because it sucked so fucking hard. Every game since has been one dumpster fire after another. SE lost the plot years ago.
Fpbp
Squaresoft was easily my favorite company in my youth and young adult years. In the 90's if the Squaresoft logo was on something, you knew it was going to be a good fucking game. These days if I see the Square-Enix logo I know it's going to have pretty graphics and if I'm lucky good music. They're a zombie company releasing content to stay alive, not to make something that resonates with their audience. What a fucking shame.
I mean this in the best way, there's nothing Final Fantasy about XII. I genuinely think that should have been an Ogre/Vagrant game, even the experimental combat would be more fitting of that title. People would've thought more highly of it too. Agree with the most of the thread that X was the last FF. What's actually annoying about the newer entries isn't that they're not FF, but that SE has spent the better part of 20 years making the game that they tell themselves everybody wants, instead of making what people actually want, which is either FFVII Rebirth or something turn-based like Clair Obscura. Shame SE is o out of touch.
Lost Odyssey was mostly forgettable, but the memories were absolute fucking kino and really captured the tragedy of being an immortal watching everything you could ever care about wither and fade away before your eyes.
FF12 is the best FF
you have absolutely dogshit taste
This is exactly how I feel.
This. Never even played anything after 12. 12 had weird pacing because main character wasn't basch or whatever change they made. But was areat world, I absolutely love love love ff tactics and want like... Want a continuation of the original story since it feels like it drops off and there could be 2 more sections.
Love tactics. Love FFX. Love ff8+9 but they lose momentum in second half...
Loved the first kingdom hearts(FFX vibes).
I liked Kingdom Hearts 2 as well, but I guess I always preferred it when Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts had different battle systems. Remake/Rebirth feels like they're trying (and failing) to capture the battle system of KH2.
Had a killer battle theme though: youtube.com
Who cares about SEslop?
At least post one in good quality
youtube.com
They only started caring right before FF8 and stopped caring after FF8.
I will never forgive them for not porting this game to modern systems. I still keep my old (probably dead) Xbox 360 in the basement solely because I know it's the only way to play this one fucking game.
You know how they are... that source code is long fucking gone by now.
Now that’s just embarrassing.
Anyone having experienced (S)NES or PS1-age FF.
So any non-Zoomer.
They wouldn't because those ppl wouldn't want to be controlled, again.
What the fuck is a roi?
the battle system is what FFVIIR should have had
A cowboy.
I would have bought it if it was.
It was over the second the merger into square enix happened.
I remember Microsoft gave away Lost Odyssey for free decade ago on Christmas
return-on-investment
That was FFIX and World of FF
World of FF was legitimately kinda fun though. In the smaller spinoff kinda way.
just make a port... please...
Stop making billion dollar games you fucking retards.
Never thought I'd see the Japs surrender to the French of all people. Thought it'd be the other way around.
this is really a brutal buck breaking isnt it? you can literally hear the angry wojak tears hitting the keyboard as someone at squeenix typed that out
It was probably just some intern between coffee runs.
So when sakaguchi was booted. It was as if Square Enix expelled its own soul
The gameplay is a joke. I was having fun until it decided random fucking cutscene damage from "overdrive" and cheese levels of damage by spamming overdrives every battle was fun. I was so disgusted I never touched it again. Can't believe I bought it at release
FF12 is the best FF.
you are god'amn right
12 was barely plausible with a healthy dose of "who thought this was good?" Moments like realizing Vaan's role was just to be a dude who tools around the group
13 simply isn't playable or even comprehensible without going into the menu and reading the plot. It's some kinda new age joke they pulled
11 was fun, just shouldn't have been a numbered entry. The only casualty of having ff11 is losing Chrono break
Don't be an ass, ff1,2,4,6,7,8,9 all have deep soul in them. 10 has some..., 11 is pure soul meshed with a slow ass mmorpg grind. But it's still the best MMORPG ever. Can't vouch for the others
mmos do not have any soul by design
It's some kinda new age joke they pulled
the story on paper was good. the director was not good enough to pull it off.
I'll let your retardation towards III slide if only because it's far too common, but what the fuck is your problem with V?
Square Enix
