I haven't bought a physical game in over a decade. If you care about something like this I suggest calling Walmart about that job opening.

Don't tell me that's how they got away with using the same kind of card as the Switch 1. Internally the Switch 2 could just recognize any card below 64 GB as a Switch 1 card, which is why any Switch 2 game needs to be either 64 GB or a game key, both of which won't be recognized by a Switch 1 even without the need for a retroactive system update.

From what I understand Switch 2 is using Samsung's VNAND 3D flash memory, which will transfer data much faster than Switch 1 cards (400MB/s compared to Switch 1's 90MB/s) and that technology simply only comes in 64GB at minimum.
The tech is just simply in a weird spot, where Nintendo basically has to upgrade to more cutting edge flash memory to keep up with what modern games demand, but the trade off being that lower storage tiers don't really exist.
Discs can get away with this by virtue of being relatively cheap regardless of size, but with cartridges the production costs are a much more real issue.

Whether or not they introduce architecture for a new card that has lower transfer speeds, lower storage capacity, and thus lower cost is kind of up in the air, but it wouldn't be as simple as just "making a 16GB option" as some people think.

I never thought it that dramatically, but the Switch idea did seem really gimmicky at the time. If we're being real, it being a Nintendo handheld is what sold it, the hybrid gimmick just made sense only after people tried it.

DK is a really weird opener, and I hope MP4 does great, but they've released three really dry trailers, like they do an awful job at showing why the game is exciting other than being a new Prime game. Sure, but I'm of the opinion that AAA studios would have gone this route anyways, plenty of big 3rd party games required downloads for a significant part of the game because they didn't want to pay for a higher capacity cartridge. Their behavior during the Switch 1 era wasn't likely to change.
Smaller games typically DID put it all on cartridge, but now a lot of those are ditching because who wants to pay for 64gb capacity if your game isn't gonna use most of that space, this is a newer development and a bigger blame to be placed on Nintendo.

I bought half my games physical on Switch with the plan on selling them at the end of the gen, end of gen came and I couldn't be fucked selling/trading individually and places like EB Games give you peanuts. It amazes me how people don't see the Switch 2's problems, it's as if no one has any experience with hardware.
Firstly, the game key cards aren't that bad in theory. There are disadvantages compared to physical games, but you still have the physical license in your hand, which is less bad than having the license only linked to an online account. But this isn't the point that should be catching people's attention now. The problem is that there's a real chance that most Switch 2 games will be digital in content, and we're talking about games that will take up 50GB (Street Fighter 6) on a device that by default only has 256GB of storage memory for EVERYTHING. In addition to your saves, photos, videos and digital games, you now also have physical games to compete with that insignificant space.
This is going to be a huge headache for users, to the point where expansion to 1TB will basically become mandatory, making the effective price of the Switch 2 jump to $600.

Second, digital games on consoles are not the same as on PCs. PCs are open platforms, so you have access to your digital products for as long as the link is up. Even if you buy an obsolete game that doesn't run on modern PCs, you can still download it and have the data on your modern hardware, or SD Card, or wherever you want to keep it offline.
In the console world, downloads are restricted to compatible consoles. Your games that you bought for the Wii can be downloaded now in theory, but not on your Switch 2. You need to have a device that was stopped being manufactured and sold almost a decade ago to be able to access the game data you bought. That's why digital games on consoles are much less accessible than on PCs. There is no official way for you to buy a current Nintendo device to download your old games, you have to go to the second-hand market.

I didn't invent that Street Fighter 6 - physical version - needs 50GB (see the article on IGN) and that the Switch 2 has 256GB of storage memory that will be shared with everything. This is a real problem and anyone with a PC knows it.
And the Switch 2 uses Micro SD Express, another technology that is much more expensive and not as widely used as the normal Micro SD that the Switch 1 used.
From what I've seen, most people are buying the 512GB Micro SD Express because they can't find the 1TB, but guess what, 800GB while better than 256GB, will just push the memory shortage problem a little further down the line.

Bigger cards are more expensive, it's the same reason most of Capcoms collections on switch were partially on card and partially downloaded. Square put X/X2 on switch and made you download X2, LA Noire has about 8 gb on card and 14gb you need to download to play it. These publishers didn't want to pay for larger cards then and now they're even more expensive.
Multiple cartridges isn't the answer here either, there's a reason that only disc based systems did that model, because paying for multiple cartridges doesn't actually alleviate production costs at all.

Nintendo first party games will be plug-and-play. All the third parties will have you pointing the delete gun at your library.

Why keycards suck, it's not actually a new problem. A lot of physical games either only have the game partially on the disc/cartridge, or they're otherwise in a state that's unplayable without some sort of day 1 update. Not ALL games, mind you, and a very large number of games WERE on the physical media in full, but there were also just a fuckton of games that couldn't be played if you didn't have an internet connection. And this problem just kept getting worse and worse over time.

Ultimately, I'm not entirely certain if Nintendo is completely at fault for giving the OPTION to use key cards, but I do think it's their fault for choosing a medium that strongly incentivizes third parties to use them. Cartridges are expensive as fuck.

For YEARS people have been shitting on Nintendo for doing "gimmick" stuff and not being a "traditional" console maker. For all intents and purposes the last time they made a "regular" console it was the Super Nintendo with the Gamecube being the fairly distant second. The Switch 2 is, without question, what the majority of people have been begging people to do for generations and now they're doing it. It's a safe, regular upgrade of what they already have. They don't manufacture below 64gb because as says, the tech they're using for Switch 2 cartridges have much higher data speeds, but because of how that new tech works the minimum capacity is 64gb.

But as other anons are saying it's possible they are locking it to 64gb cards so that as many 64gb cards are manufactured as possible. This would eventually lower manufacturing costs and make it easier for companies to buy 64gb cards, and even lower costs of a hypothetical 128gb card, and beyond.

In short, was Nintendo capable of lower options? Probably, but they're likely banking on their first party games and whatever third parties decide to come for the ride selling enough 64gb cards to a point that costs come down and in a few years this problem evaporates.

Switch 2 SoC is 214 mm2 while high end mobile SoC are around 100 mm2 but they use newer nodes so the cost is likely similar. The screen is definitely cheaper than what Apple or Samsung use on their flagship but isn't a shitty budget display either since they've gone with 120Hz miniLED with VRR. I wouldn't need surprised if they skipped OLED because mobile OLEDs don't support VRR yet. They don't have to spend money on cameras but they have other elements like the fan and controls.
The latest iPhone and Samsung flagships cost around $500 to make with around a 100% margin at $1000 price. Switch 2 overall is cheaper to manufacture but not that much cheaper, it'll mostly depend on what Samsung is asking for those ancient 8nm dies. The $300 BoM estimate for Switch 2 is probably accurate but it's not like they make a killing on each console sold. Their (and console market's in general) margins are below industry standard and they still have R&D costs.

But most importantly they basically reinvent how the system works internally which makes it so hard to emulate, while Nintendo hardly has changed shit with the console's software and inner workings since the Gamecube, there's a very obvious reason why while the Gamecube took 8-10 years to get a good emulator, while the Wii and Wii u took 2 or 3 years, and basically we had an emulator for the Switch not even a year after launch.

More than anything I remember by the time Smash Ultimate leaked some days before, emulators already were harshly running it, and just a month or so after release it handled fine, I even remember getting some DLC for it.
Naturally the Switch 2's architecture will once again either be the same, or identical to the Switch's as its been for forever, it will be even easier to emulate it than the Switch was, if anything it having "more power than a 2013 console/laptop" (Lmao as if this meant jackshit 12 years later), it will just take a slightly stronger CPU to run it, of which most PCs already probably have something in par or above the PS4s.

I used to be a Nintendo fan up to the Wii U (Unironically great console and I shilled it in Anon Babble all the time), but with the Switch and paid online, I find it hard to believe how there is still loyal Nintendo fans, SPECIALLY now with all the shit the Switch 2 packages, wake up faggot holy shit.
